Review summary

The Vernon offers a warm welcome, "excellent service," and a cozy ambiance. While some dishes like trout and fish and chips are praised, menu limitations and inconsistent food quality are noted. "Great staff" and a lovely location enhance the dining experience, though improvements in food preparation are needed for consistent satisfaction.

Whilst the menu was not very extensive it, worked well. It’s better to do a dozen dishes well, rather than 20 badly. I had the trout was delicious and the spinach was perfect (just wilted, not soggy). My husband had traditional fish and chips. The batter was light and crispy and the chips were golden and chunky, just the way he likes them. For dessert I chose the knickerbocker glory. This was again well prepared with the twist of including pieces of brownie. Sadly, the sheer size of it defeated me and even my husband, valiantly digging in after his own dessert couldn't finish it for me. He had already eaten a portion of sticky toffee pudding, which he declared to be very tasty and just soft and squishy enough. The staff were friendly and helpful and, despite being very busy, didn’t try to rush us. Overall, a really good experience, which I would recommend.

Very limited Sunday menu. Roasts only with one vegetarian option. Meat was tough, vegetables hard and gravy watery. No up to date wine menu. Very disappointing. On the other hand, the staff and service were excellent, especially Josh, who couldn't do enough for us. Nice decor, ambience and overall experience but sort your food and menus out!!

We have been to the Vernon for Sunday lunch many times it has always been good, the last time though was very different, we felt rushed even though it wasn’t busy, the waitress asked if we were ready for our mains as she was clearing our starters, we said no we’d rather have some time between, five minutes later we were asked again if we were ready now!! We weren’t but we said yes because we assumed they were just sitting on a hot plate waiting!! We would normally have more drinks but because our starter and main had been served so quickly we only had one, we were in the pub less than hour.

Ordered the roast which was a good value price. Had seen other reviews which said that only 2 roast potatoes were provided. Sad to say that was the case and extra potatoes were £4.50! Unfortunately the potatoes were undercooked and quite hard, the other member of the group couldn't eat hers as they were large and harder. We softened ours in the gravy and managed to eat them. It was such a pity as potatoes are cheap and if they are part-boiled and then roasted, the results are usually good. The restaurant should go to a great effort to resolve this issue as the lamb was good, as was the selection of veg. We did mention this to the waitress when she collected the plates and she said that she would pass it on. A real shame as roast potatoes are our granddaughter's favourite part of a roast! The desserts were good , sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble.

We sat outside in the sunshine, chairs were very comfortable, the young man serving us was very attentive and served everything promptly. We all has different salads and all were delicious and fabulous value for money.

Staff were friendly. All glasswearcwas dirty, smeared and unpolished. Food was poor. Trout was nice but the portion was very small, our menu promised creamed spinach and it was replaced without notice or request with a cry under cooked cabbage , disappointed. My friend had the veg cheese burger. Her review was it was tasless due to lack of pickle, salad or coldslaw. The waitress was untrained and could not tell us about the menu, struggled with drinks, card reader and with making the coffee which was messy. It could be such a busy fabulous pub as it has the venue and views

Met up with some friends for a meal and we weren't disappointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming from the start. The food was excellent, we had a small issue with one dish, which was resolved quickly with apologies. Great service means such a lot and this team delivered. Would definitely recommend.
