Beer garden like no other! Pure tranquillity, amongst genuinely breathtaking views ... probably the best beer garden in the world! And plenty of space to be away from others.
Inside: low ceilings, natural slate floors and roaring inglenook fires create the perfect ambience in which to enjoy the delicious home cooked food or just drinks.
Seasonal dishes lovingly prepared using fresh local produce can be enjoyed in any of the many relaxed and cosy areas of this country inn.
We are a dog friendly hotel and they are as welcome as you are.
And if you don’t want to leave when last orders are called we have sixteen individual rooms, waiting for our guests, from larger suites, split level accommodation to classic valley view rooms, we can offer options to suit all.
Despite the booking being confirmed by OpenTable when we arrived the pub was shut.
Not a great system!!!!
All three of us were interested to try the Dolwen beefburgers as we had been talking to the farmer from Dolwen the previous day at the end of our walk in the hills. It is commendable that The West Arms serves local food to support the community. The beefburgers were very tasty and served in a beautifully served in a fresh crisp crusted ciabatta roll. All of the food which we saw being served looked delicious. Roaring fires were very welcoming as the evenings were cooling down in September.
The place is beautiful, the service is warm and friendly and the food is outstanding!
Have visited for 50 plus years and although it is very nice it’s not quite got the offering correct I am sorry to say
A lovely find. Such a warm and inviting place with great food a decent wine list and lovely friendly hosts. The added bonus was the adorable pub dogs, Jasper And Sam making it super cosy and welcoming x Would definitely recommend this fab place.n
Lovely welcome. Sat outside in the garden because of covid but the view is amazing. The staff where lovely and the food was also lovely, had the Sunday special roast beef with all the trimmings which was spot on. Will definitely be going back 👌😋
Our first meal since the lockdown and what a delicious meal it was, in the spacious garden with stunning views of the hills. A superb Sunday roast with an equally delicious lemon tart to follow, finished with a crunchy ‘cream Catalana’ style topping. Very reassured by the lengths staff went to in following COVID-secure guidelines.
Lovely setting and ambience, service and customer interaction just right. Lots of places to sit by the fire whilst you have pre dinner drinks, much of the food is sourced locally and cooked with Great care and respect for the ingredients.
Overpriced for what it was. Ok food but not atmosphere and food and selection could massively be improved. Bringing it down a level to just really good pub grub would be a great start!
A true gem in the mid-Wales countryside
Fantastic food and excellent service
Made to feel very welcome even with our 2 large dogs
Had an beautiful Sunday Lunch here, everything was perfectly done with great service and a nice pint of Boltmaker. Could fault it at all.
Had a lovely overnight stay the day before appointment at Hospital in Oswestry early Wednesday morning.
Myself, daughter and best friend, loved the ambience of the fire with the lovely wine and the food which was excellent. We were made to feel really welcome.
Need to come back and bring our hiking boots.
Thank you once again The West Arms.
We booked several days in advance but arrived to find that no table had been reserved for us. They then tried to stick us at a table behind the door, which we refused. The two females on duty were bordering on being rude, the only highlight of the evening was our waiter, Sam, who did his best. All we heard all evening was him having to apologise to other diners for the various issues with their meals.
Our meals were mediocre at best - when you go out to eat you expect to be served something better than you can produce yourself at home, unfortunately I could’ve done far better myself and I am just a self taught home cook!
The windowsills were littered with the carcasses of dead wasps, which is only marginally better than live wasps I suppose! All in all not a great experience and we will not be returning.
Fabulous location, great building with lots of nooks and crannies 😊 lovely relaxed ambience and fantastic food. Great menu with not too much choice but everything I loved, just as I like it! We were so glad we made the trip (a 45 min drive)
Unexpected gem. Lunch and reconoitre for a walking group weekend next Spring. Staff were so helpful, welcoming and accommodating our need to check out guest rooms, lounge etc as well as bar and restaurant. Food was very good.
Perfect get away from it all venue for our group.
Wow what a fantastic place . Set in the middle of the gorgeous hills of North Wales . The welcome could not have been warmer . The couple that run the hotel are clearly seasoned professionals who understand how to make each and every one of their guests feel valued .
Nothing was too much trouble , the food was delicious and the bed was the comfiest I’ve come across . Fully Recommend
All was perfect. Food, wine, advices and kindness. With fire in the chimney inside
Cracking food, really tasty would be back again for sure. Well worth the drive
Very nice place. Quality was superb and the staff exceptionally friendly and well trained. Prices are a little high, but you get very high standards here. A place to visit when you deserve a treat.
My family and friends have been visiting the West Arms for the past 83 years (!), and we are still really enjoying the ambience and food!
The West Arms is the place to dine!! I could not rate it highly enough. The service was excellent and the food was unbelievable. Dietary needs can be catered for. (Vegetarian, vegan, coeliac etc etc) The inn is off the beaten track and therefore was quiet and extremely peaceful. The owners, Mark and Nicky, have been able to refurbish the building to a very high quality and have produced a relaxing, modern ambience, which sits very well with the age of the building (17th Century). It is obvious that money, time and love have been spent to bring The West up to the amazing standards it achieves. Dogs and children are welcomed. There is a very wide choice of gins (42- can you believe it???!!!) whiskies, wines and beers. Cosy fires, comfy seating- just love it!! We’ll be back very soon!!!!
Since our family has been visiting the West Arms for the past 85 years it is still a great experience!!
Wonderful dining experience throughout the pre and post dinner drinks, food, service and ambience. Top class
The restaurant was very quiet for a Friday night but it was close to being cut off by snow! The service was pleasant, the food aspires to sophisticated levels but falls a little short while the prices emulate those close to a city restaurant.
One may be expecting too much of a country establishment although there are one or two venues in the wider area which are restaurants rather than pubs and offer good food at an acceptable country price.
Lovely cosy Saturday lunch. Delicious food, roaring fire and friendly dogs milling around. Will definitely return.
My partner and I have now been to the West Arms twice, this time for my 30th birthday, and we were treated like royalty. I could not have had a better time. The food is exquisite, chef Grants Williams is a real talent, and owners Mark and Nicky Willamson are so friendly and welcoming. The hotel is dog friendly (Mark and Nicky have two dogs themselves, who are often at the hotel with them) and boasts several log fires, a cosy bar, wonderful restaurant and a stunning, peaceful location.
Very pleasant evening, good service, food I would not cook
A bit like the curate’s egg.
Overall average rather than good. Service was very good however.
What a little gem. Great food. Will definitely be back.
Fabulous meal and a lovely friendly welcome and atmosphere. Menu is varied, food was super quality, will definitely be visiting again soon.
Excellent quality food sourced locally which was well presented
Nice selection of local cheese to finish.
Beautiful little gem within a gem of an area.Gorgeous ambience. Lovely staff.
A lovely sunny day which helped as we could sit outside before lunch. Food was well presented and cooked and service very good and smiley
The Hotel was very quite on the lunch time we were there so not that much atmophere. Very friendly service and the fact that it was for a birthday was celebrated by the staff. very kind of them. Food was plentyful but can't say that the higher price was necessarily shown in the taste of the food. lovely place but a bit off the beaten track for a visit again.
