About this restaurant

This charming whitewashed inn has been the meeting place for Brigsteer locals since 1762, and is still a regular fixture on the Cumbrian dining scene. The Wheatsheaf at Brigsteer is a traditional British boozer with a contemporary twist, and we love the cosy dining room decorated with wooden floors, terra cotta coloured walls and hand crafted wooden tables. The service at The Wheatsheaf is kind and friendly, and the modern British menu is guaranteed to please even the most jaded gourmands. We love the loin of Holker venison served with fondant potatoes and red wine jus; the steamed suet pudding of slowly-braised local rabbit and wood pigeon; and the mini doughnuts served with cinnamon sugar and vanilla ice cream.

We ate at the Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer Cumbria and were delighted with the whole experience. Our greeting was cheerful and warm and the service good and friendly. Our meal was delicious and it was great that we could order from the bar menu as well. I had a creamy fish and potato pie and my fellow diners both had the local lamb served with roasted veg which they both said was delicious. My dessert of panna cotta with honeycomb was unusual and light.

Our first visit to The Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer near Kendal and well worth it. Not the easiest place to find but then it is nice and secluded. Starters were a baked goats cheese and a prawn and melon cocktail followed by cumbrian beef wellington and pork belly . For desert we shared a creme brulee. All the above sounds basic but they were all well presented with variances which added to the flavours. Service was friendly although not many customers. Will return

The Wheatsheaf, Kendal has a quaint, homely and welcoming feel to it. Although only one member of staff, she worked the bar and restaurant very well. The cooking was "up-market" bar food, done very well. Only one facet disappointed, when scallops are mentioned, you would expect just that, not one scallop sliced into three!!! Given that, the wine list was reasonable and overall the meal was very acceptable

We used the Wheatsheaf as a "half-way" stop-off for lunch between London and Scotland, and it worked very well indeed. Despite the motorway delays we received a warm welcome and the food was very good. We will return I am sure.

This really is a lovely spot which we first found on a trip to the Lakes last year. The food, ambience etc were as good as we remembered it.
