The White Horse
The bar is warm & cosy, with old parquet & low beams hung with antique copper jugs, while the dining room is light & fresh, its French windows opening onto a sunny terrace. In our charming private dining room, up a winding stair in the oldest part of the pub, we can comfortably host a dinner party for twelve.
This is the third time we’ve visited here within about 6 weeks. The first time it was excellent and we thought great a new and reliable eatery for us. On that occasion it was a Thursday evening, service and food were lovely. The second time was Sunday lunch. Service was not great. Some of what we ordered was only available as a half portion as part of the chicken Milanese had been used for a child’s meal. So, why offer it all! The roast dinner was luke warm. Having asked for gravy on the side it didn’t turn up without being asked for. The chicken just tasted of oil and garlic.
The third time was a weekday lunch. Service was fine, the food that we had was lovely but two of us decided to have the pie which was on both the main and set menu only to be told when we ordered that it wasn’t available and neither was another of the main courses. So, why not tell you this before you look at the menu? Then, both my parents requested Strawberry ice cream in their selection only for our waitress to come back having been told by the chef there was no strawberry ice cream. On the plus side, they did write Happy Birthday in chocolate sauce on my Mums plate.
Sadly we won’t be going back, too unpredictable.
This was a Sunday visit. The menu was pretty uninspiring ... there was actually nothing that really stood out. The steaks we ordered were cooked well. No problem there but the chicken Milanese was overcooked, near to burnt. There was no real offer of any compensation when this was pointed out to the servers.
I felt that standards have dropped at this place and it would take something a bit special to tempt me back there fore a while.
Nice pub, more of a restaurant type. I would prefer to have more options for a Sunday lunch and a kids menu is also missing. Good food overall
Went there with family. Very friendly
7 of us for Sunday lunch. Very accommodating staff as we had our dog with us.
Fantastic roast - best we’ve had in a pub.
A nice place. Good atmosphere. The food choices are good and the quality normally good. On Saturday however of our 3 dishes 2 disappointed - the filleted fish was tiny and am not sure where the rest of it was, and a 16oz Tomahawk pork steak was 5 small strips of meat. So taste was all good; but portion services very small. Service was OK,but some of the younger staff are a bit erratic and less knowledgeable.
Excellent service wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. Will go again for sure!
Considering how busy it was on a Saturday night the service was reasonable. The noise level was dreadful but I do realise that it's hard to do anything about other diners with voices like cheese graters!!
The duck was excellent but rather expensive as was the wine. Sitting beside the disabled toilet was poor as I had to get up to close the door. Ambience was not wonderful when eating within view of the toilet bowl!
We might come again but not on a Saturday evening.
Lovely to sit in the garden on a lazy Sunday, the White horse is perfect for that.
Good thank you
Summer menu was disappointing and not very tasty
Meal for 10. Food took a little while to arrive, but once it did it was as good as normal.
Very clean, staff charming and helpful. Did not feel we needed to vacate table, it was quieter as late lunch into afternoon though still appreciated the chance for my friend and I to catch up over a lazy lunch. Imagine a nice place to pop into for a cuppa after an afternoon walk. Shall return, thank you.
We had the crispy Camembert starter which was good but not enough chutney .
For entrees we had fish and chips (good) and pan fried cod (very good ) .
This is not our first visit and the ambiance is always nice.
Service this time was very good .
I would recommend for dinner , just a drink in the pub side or for Sunday roast . Great for a family Sunday dinner .
Great service and food but found it a bit cramped as we had to have pushchair for baby .
We went for Sunday lunch. The pub is nice but the food was average and the service was very slow.
Excellent as normal
Food good, but trying too hard to be something special. It should keep things simple. Great atmosphere/location. Service is in your face and slightly annoying.
Excellent as usual.
Love the White Horse, my favourite restaurant in the area. Dog friendly, amazing food, friendly staff and good wine selection.
We were served by Ellie on Sunday 6th of Jan and she really looked after us! Working in hospitality it’s nice to be served for a change and her service was great! She explained the special to us and we went for roast pork and beef, both of which were yummy and we really enjoyed them! Although there was a slight wait for our mains due to it being busy the FOH staff apologised it was worth the wait! The puddings were delicious and I’d definitely go back again!
Service was friendly but very slow - waited a long time for food.
I thought the portions were in small side for main course burgers.
I only had a main which was very nice but I wish I had a starter due to the small size of the main.
Excellent food and service but quite expensive.
So glad we tried the White Horse! Celebrated my daughter’s birthday, food was outstanding and the staff were amazing at making it a special occasion for her amongst all the usual run up to Christmas customers. Will definitely be back!
Just love coming to the white horse , have been with family including grandchildren and also with groups of friends and have always found the service and food first class.
Enjoyed our visit except the heating didn't seem to be working and we were cold. also a large table were already seated and we had to sit in the bar area for a drink despite being on time and booked well in advance. The staff however were very polite and friendly and the food good.
Food was nice - service atrocious. We were going to have a dessert but waited so long after we finished our main course that we gave up. We weren’t asked if everything was ok either during the meal or when we paid. The extra gravy we requested never turned up.
Disappointed by the food. Variable quality and the most disgusting bread and butter pudding I have ever encountered.
Fantastic food, friendly staff and great specials!
Always reliable food and very friendly staff. Caters for your mood, outside, inside and bar options
Warm wine was a real let down!
Nice place and good service. Pudding better than main
Great food. Good choices, especially on the specials board.
Great restaurant with plenty of parking, very nice decor, good food and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend this restaurant but were only in the area as we were picking family up from Luton Airport.
Finding and booking this through Open Table was very easy and efficient also.
Love it here. Great food and wine. Good parking and outdoor seating.
Another lovely experience. Friendly staff. Nice food. Good choice. Relaxed atmosphere. Outdoor seating too.
Service Was Very Good Waiter Was Excellent. Top Lad. Thank You For Looking After Me And My Family.
Had Sunday lunch at The White Horse for my son's birthday. We arrived very early but the staff rearranged table sittings so that we could eat earlier. The food was excellent. Service was quick even though the restaurant was busy. Would highly recommend.
The roast beef dinner was a disaster. The meat was tough and inedible, the rest of the plate was fine and was not charged for the meal. My friends enjoyed their choice
