The Windmill Bar & Restaurant
Head chefs Richard Lenik & Thomas Curtis have earned an enviable reputation plus over a thousand 5 Star reviews for their delightful cuisine.
A beautiful Cathedral Marquee in our gardens completes the perfect picture.
Despite having a confirmed booking was closed when we arrived Ruined my wife's Birthday
Our experiences on December 21 was the bad experiences we never had. Waiting there to be welcome for 15min , I decided to look for someone to take us to our table number 6. Then the girl let to us there with no returns after 30 min we left..
You lost the reputation the restaurant has in the past , will be very difficult for you built it up againg
I was very disappointed though I do appreciate it was midweek lunchtime. But the food was awful and meagre, I ordered nut roast and had one small piece, I think the vegetables were frozen not fresh, if they were fresh they ere overcooked as they were soggy. The young lady serving did an admirable job considering. I will probably not venture back
The Windmill used to be one of our favourite places. We were VERY disappointed. The whole place was cold other diners had their coats on. We had the Xmas dinner option at £229 per person. The starter was disappointing but barely acceptable. After a long wait the Xmas platter arrived. The meat was dry the veg was stewed the gravy cold. Horrible! The sweet was OK but not memorable. The staff were clumsy and inexperienced. Finally, music had been advertised for this Friday venue but did not happen. All in all an expensive disaster doubly embarrassing as we made the booking for ourselves and and friends. Will never return.
My husband and I booked for the Sunday banquet only to find that the word 'banquet' was decidedly misleading. I chose the vegetarian option which, according to the way that the menu was written, appeared to come with a variety of vegetables on the side. My husband received a full roast with full accompaniments but I received 6 mushroom tortellini with a small amount of garnish. It was the size of an average starter . When we managed to speak to a waitress (the service was very poor and there were very few staff), we queried if I should have received veg on the side as the dish I had received, whilst very tasty, was not in any way worth £21.95 and could not be called a main meal. We were informed that the additional veg were only for people who had the roast. We pointed out that the menu did NOT say this and were told that they would look at getting the menu rewritten to reflect this. Overall, we were left feeling disappointed. Apart from the issue with the food, the service was poor and slow, plus there were insufficient waiting staff. The restaurant was also very cold (we sat upstairs) - several people had their coats round their shoulders. The restaurant could have remedied the matter of the food by bringing veg or by reducing the price, but nothing was done and I wonder if they will even look at the issue. If you are a vegetarian I would recommend you give this meal a miss- it is very poor value for money.
Was seated. Waited about 20 minutes to be asked what drink we would like. Then took another twenty minutes to arrive. Asked for a jug of tap water. Never received it. Food was offered on a platter or pre plated. Asked for pre plated. Came on a platter regardless lol. All serving staff looked completely lost. Like they’d been dropped off in a restaurant where they didn’t know what they were meant to be doing. Roast platter was cold. Very underwhelming. No salt and pepper on table asked for it.
Desert was lovely. But had no cutlery lol. Had to ask for it. Was an absolute joke of a dinner. Like fewlty towers. Just way less charming and witty!!! Avoid. Please. Paid £50+ for I’ve no idea what to be honest!
I was there for a Sunday roast for the first time with a friend and my son. The place was cold therefore the food was quick cold. Not enough staff. Too noisy with the piano nearby so I have to raise my voice to engage a conversation with my friend who's next to me. Finally, the food is not good enough for the price like the beef is tough and dry and I have to ask for a Yorkshire pudding for my son as it didn't come with.
Sadly, not great. A shame because we had popped in previously on the off chance of a table and had a good experience. On the strength of that we invited some friends to come with us on this occasion and it was disappointing. The food was tasty, but no where near the same portion size for four people as it had been for two previously. The idea is that the food is delivered on one big platter and you can ask for a top up (subject to availability) however, this doesn't work in practice as nobody comes anywhere near your table after the platter has been delivered so there is not the opportunity to ask for extra. We had to get up and walk over to the bar area to summon some service when we decided we would like a coffee after the meal. Plus, the food wasn't piping hot - lukewarm at best. We asked for the cauliflower cheese to be served separately, which it was... onto the floor! The waitress dropped it on the carpet next to our table! But worst of all the restaurant itself was cold - a chilly December Sunday and you would think that the wood burning stove would be lit. But no, just full of ashes from the previous evening and then finally someone starting to light it as we left!
All in all, would not recommend
Very nice restaurant, friendly staff and good food however there was only 3 tables on a Saturday night which is a real shame as there was not much of an atmosphere I think the location is why as it is is quite hidden.
Firstly there was some confusion as I had already confirmed my food order & paid online as per booking ref. I was then contacted the day before asking for my food order by end of day as otherwise my booking would be cancelled..strange. On arrival there was no-one at front of house to greet us & we had to search for a member of staff in order to be seated. Part of the menu was bubbly & canapés on arrival, with no canapés ever materialising. After 25-30 minutes waiting for our drink order, we had to ask another member of staff who assisted us. Thankfully we had enough cash to pay our final bill as there was a fault with their remote card payment system. Finally I must add that this was a very busy night & the 2 course menu was outstanding as always, real shame the service on the night was so poor.
After booking a table I can across some negative feedback that made me very apprehensive and I came close to cancelling our booking. We’re SO glad I didn’t. It was perfect. Great service and the food was fab. My Mum even said it’s the best meal out (Sunday carvery) she’s had for a long time. Wish we lived closer to go again soon.
A very special dining experience. Flavours were amazing. Very relaxing atmosphere
The food was cold the table was sticky we loved this restaurant but has declined considerably such a shame as this is a lovely venue
The best home cooked food I have had in a restaurant ever. The chicken, Han and leek pie was out standing.
Always a lovely visit, the food is excellent. Will be back soon.
Great food and great staff. Definitely going to go back!
Very disappointed as had been booked for a while. We waited over an hour for drinks. The food was also slow to arrive which was then cold. We ordered puddings but they took 2 attempts to be hot so we gave up by this point The manager did try and rectify the situation by knocking money off the bill but the experience was not a good one
Food ok but very cold inside the restaurant and extremely slow service.
This lunch was for my birthday and one of the guests asked that her coming was a surprise. On my arrival the MD Tony told me she was coming!!
The food came Luke warm, and we only had half of it. We had no cabbage, broccoli or red cabbage and the roast potatoes were very few.
As a gesture we were given coffee on the house. This was no compensation for spoiling a celebratory lunch. I would certainly not recommend anyone.
Very nice restaurant with lovely ambience and attentive staff. Food was very good and also good value for money. Only downside was the pianist with accompanying electronic backing track. Brilliant musician but our table was very close to the piano making it very difficult to hear each other.
Had lunch on a Friday - very quiet - food was plentiful and tasty and staff were very good. There wasn't alot of atmosphere as the resturant was not very full and it was a very rainy day so felt a bit chilly. I would go back as the food , especially the chips, was great.
Excellent Sunday carvery. Fantastic selection of meat and veg. Very full so a bit noisy but otherwise superb. You need to book.
Website suggests a 3 courses for £22 on set nights. We went on one of those nights and this wasn't the case. It was a Friday night, music was loud, until the pianist came in. We were told they’d ran out of burgers! Which for a Friday is unacceptable and the fact the restaurant was practically empty when our orders were took. A party came in which was located upstairs, there were several children running/jumping around and screaming up there, no apologies were made. It was unbearable.
Great food exelent service would highly recommend it
Great lunch and yet again outstanding value too. Beautiful views and excellent service as usual with very tasty coffee to finish off. I have eaten at the Windmill quite a few times and fully intend to be back soon.
Excellent all round. We were greeted by exceptionally friendly staff who couldn’t do enough for us. Table service was speedy and the food was gorgeous. As it was a Sunday lunch banquet, it’s effectively like a carvery so you can ask for food to be topped up. We found that what we had was more than enough! Have already recommended to friends.
Lovely restaurant with a beautiful view. the sat nav took us firstly to a wrong location so we were late for booking but we were still sat at our table with no issues from staff. Food was nice but menu has a bit of a disappointing small range to choose from. We watched poor staff members have to deal with a group of particularly unpleasant customers who were making a fuss/storming in and out for no reason (more than likely to get freebies/discount) and they were calm and apologetic. Would return again.
Fantastic evening, lovely surroundings and great service, will definitely return soon
The owner needs to make sure that the food served and the menus in the restaurant match whats advertised on the website.
Food well cooked but very plain not what we were expecting from the menu on the website. Service was good ambience was excellent.
Rather overcooked haddock cake. One poor waitress did very well but made for slow service.
Lovely setting overlooking the valley, service and food very good. Appreciated the complimentary bread, oil & balsamic whilst waiting for our order and didn’t even need to ask for table water.
Would definitely return and no hesitation in recommending. We had the lunch deal which had plenty of choice.
This was our 5 or 6th visit and on this occasion we was very disappointed food very poor not cook beef very raw vegetables not cooked very hard that had to put a lot of force to cut potatoes broccoli parsnips carrots, we complained and was told the head chief has changed.
I booked my birthday meal back in April for September 22nd and have been assured this will be perfect. If its not be sure I will complain.
Welcoming atmosphere and warm greeting to begin our Windmill lunch. Venue is nicely decorated with live piano music as a background noise which wasn't too loud. Service was good overall although a couple of staff were much friendlier than the others. Food arrived on a large platter and there was plenty of it. It all tasted delicious and would definitely have been 5 stars other than it wasn't as hot as it perhaps could have been. Ours was the last table to be served so maybe it had been plated a few minutes? Would definitely recommend and we will return. Great value for this area. Very pleasant afternoon.
I was wanting to write a rave review about The Windmill Restaurant owing to its ambience & setting but sadly I can’t . There were six of us for the 3pm Sunday Lunch menu. On arrival our table wasn’t ready, fine, we were happy to relax with a drink but sadly that never arrived. When we eventually got to our table we had to wait a further thirty minutes. Our order took ages to arrive but when it did it looked like a dogs dinner. The scraps of pork, beef & lamb were plonked on beneath a pile of Yorkshire puddings. The roast potatoes were cold & soggy. Maybe we were unlucky but we certainly had the dregs!! On to the desert, took over 30 minutes to place our order so asked if we could have it outside. No problem & although we had to wait another 30 minutes we were at least in great surroundings where a six year old could let off steam. For the number of guests we could only see two waitresses & a supervisor which wasn’t enough. We had to ask a couple of tunes for water when previously it had been in the tables. The waitresses were rather sullen which made us feel uneasy & shy of asking for anything.
Arrived early and was seated straight away, lovely service definitely go again and recommend
Host certainly made our experience here a great one. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was amazing and just the right amount. Will definitely be back highly recommend
Arrived at 2.45 for 3pm sitting completely ignored for 45 mins after we received bottle of table water..after 4 newly arrived tables were served we decided enough was enough... left without having lunch
Not good service at all
The outlook was very pretty.
The restaurant was very nice, with spacious seating.
The service was good and welcoming.
The food was very good and filling
Overall a very nice dining experience
A peaceful, lovely, relaxing evening as it was a rare night out away from our children. The service was great, staff friendly, accommodating. Food great, set menu was value for money although not blown away by seafood linguine (main) otherwise would have rated 5. Also, whilst I understand a business need to make money, the Prosecco was way overpriced. When it arrived at our table, it was the same label as in our fridge, so we know how much it cost.
The setting is beautiful. The place was very clean and lovely open space. Plenty of parking.
It’s a set menu with a set price with additional surcharges if you have steak.
I was disappointed that it wasn’t a carvery any more, but overall it was very nice.
