Now in the care of Mick and Lydia Binnington, The Windmill has been sympathetically refurbished to maintain its character and original features including the lovely floor to ceiling oak beams.
A seasonal menu in our relaxed, cosy restaurant offers elegant, simple food sourced from the best produce from around the local area, paired with a friendly and efficient service.

Fabulous meal as always and a great touch with an anniversary card for our special evening. Staff very attentive.
Delicious food, lovely pub and lovely service. Would recommend.
We like everything about The Windmill, very good food, friendly staff and they welcome dogs. Mick and Lydia are the perfect host.
Another fabulous evening spent with good friends, great food, efficient service and relaxing ambience. Will definitely be back.
The Windmill gets better every time we go. Fabulous food and impeccable service.
The prix fixe menu for lunchtime on Saturdays is excellent value.
A great find in a county not well served with good restaurants. Every aspect of the meal was excellent and we shall definitely return.
A cosy experience. The staff were very friendly, and the service very good. The food was delicious. It was a lovely experience to be repeated.
We had a wonderful experience at the windmill. The food was amazing, the staff welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be going back.
The restaurant is small but this added to its charm. We had a warm welcome. The staff were very helpful and the food and ambience was excellent. We asked for a leisurely pace and they listened. Would definitely go back.
We received a very warm welcome. Staff were tentative, but not a nuisance.
The food was excellent. Good size portions, perfectly cooked and delicious.
The pub/restaurant was comfortable and homely, with a nice decor.
I would recommend going to the Windmill. We will certainly be going again and again.
Couldn’t have been a better evening. The food was truly amazing, staff attentive and friendly. Not expensive for the quality of food. Can’t wait to go back.
First visit , I am very local but just never got around to visiting despite continued recommendation. Pleased with the result , enjoyed the food , nice country feel to the beamed building , welcome was good and initial service good...... however it was clear that a regular table needed priority treatment and time. Their food was served before ours , almost as if they had pre-ordered ! None of this was an issue - just mildly amusing . That is until service fell at the final hurdle , dessert menus were presented and no-one returned to take the order for close to 15 mins, which would have been creme brûlée twice and 2 teas. As it was ‘ I’m a celebrity ...’ was calling by the time we were asked and we took the bill instead. This will not stop us returning although given this was mid week and pressure of delivery was an issue , I will skip peak times , Fridays/Saturday / Sunday and leave it to the regulars !!
Second time that we have been and certainly lived up to expectations. Food was superb.
Probably the 8th visit so far and will continue returning, everything is spot-on. Lydia and Sharon are always brilliant in front of house and the food is always amazing so Mick and his staff are obviously doing a superb job too. Can not rate it enough
What a treat, cold Wednesday night , but warm cosy welcome at The Windmill as always .
Nothing too much trouble , service professional and with a smile , note to other front of house, it makes a difference !!
Quality of the food is undeniable , creatively presented , every flavour on the plate distinguishable . Triumph
Excellent food. Staff are very friendly excellent service
Thank you for Making our evening so wonderful. Everything from the minute we walked in to the moment we left was superb
Unreal, fantastic food and unbelievable service. This place is top notch.
Birthday meal, very nice and really pleased that the restaurant gave me a birthday card which was a nice touch. We will be going back and possibly booking the event room in the future too.
Lovely location, lovely owners and staff, lovely food. Very nice indeed the owners have done such a wonderful job since taking it over.
This is a lovely restaurant.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
The food is exquisite.
Great place. A little gem in Essex. Food is amazing and Lydia (head waiter) is welcoming and always bright and accommodating.
Our first visit to The Windmill last Friday evening. Food and service excellent.

Fabulous as always.. both the food and the service were impeccable.
My daughter took me here for my birthday dinner . We enjoyed it very much . The food was superbly cooked and the service excellent .
A great meal, the food was excellent & the service was fantastic. We will definitely be going back!
Beautiful food presented thoughtfully by friendly and helpful staff. Will be going back!
Nice simple food cooked really well at a decent price.
We've heard so much about The Windmill from local friends but had never been until now and I can't believe we left it so long! Its quite small in comparison to places like the Lion Inn and The Galvin Green Man (which are also great places to eat), but The Windmill seriously makes up for it in the quality of their food, the friendliness of their staff, the cosiness the place as a whole. I have to say this is the best place to eat in Chelmsford now, so much so we've booked it for our Christmas meal.
I would definitely recommend booking a week or two in advance.
The only thing which does let The Windmill down is there is no baby changing facilities.
Beautifully restored old building serving excellent food. Friendly service and nice ambiance
Visited the windmill for the second time with friends. Excellent service, amazing food and lovely atmosphere! we will be back soon x
A thoroughly enjoyable evening. Food delicious and service excellent. Ambience perfect for a meal with friends or just two of you. Thank you
One of our guests described the lunch as "super". (And we agreed!)
Beautifully decorated building. Excellent service. The choice of dishes on the menu could be a tad more upmarket to match the style of the venue. Fish and chips in a place like this? Yes it's an English classic but there are so many other, slightly more sophisticated ways to celebrate English cuisine, right?
Food was fantastic. It was a weekday so we were selecting from the set menu. Choice was difficult as we could have happily eaten any of the dishes. It was served in a friendly efficient manner. A great way to celebrate with my family. Thank you!
As ever, the food was superb and the only complaint I have is I have to stop myself eating too much as it’s all so delicious. The service is also superb, so welcoming and no waiting. Mick and Lydia are the best chef and Maitre d’ team I’ve ever met and I’m so lucky it’s right on my doorstep.
Our third visit. Each course was delicious. Excellent service - everybody very friendly and attentive.
