Three Wise Monkeys - Colchester
Food is served all throughout the day with a passionate focus on slow-cooked, smoked American-style barbecue food and gourmet burgers. High quality local produce is at the heart of everything we do.
We provide a range of Vegetarian and Vegan options.
I've been a regular here for a year or so, coming in for lunch with my partner but this time we thought we'd bring her family to dinner there. The service was above and beyond in such a busy restaurant (didn't catch the guys name, but it was the manager) and honestly he made the night! Cracking gig upstairs too, I'd reccomend TWM to anyone who has a passion for great food and love a relaxed environment !
For casual drinks it's good. However the food was just passable. Would go there again for a beer but not to eat.
My son absolutely loved it. The burger was pretty good, I wished I had that. I had the baby ribs and the jerk chicken, the ribs were good but I think the skin on the chicken could've been crispy. Fries were good, loaded fries great. My friends boys didn't like their spicy wings, they were sweet rather than spicy. Mac and cheese was yummy. Overall a mixed bag but I liked the vibe.
I've visited The Monkeys a number of time, both in the evening and for lunch. Evening time is definitely noisier; even upstairs. However the food is ALWAYS good and the atmosphere is relaxed, it's a great start to a night out.
Yes but not for someone who looks for a calm place or a place to discuss something, and not for someone who hates noise and crowded places.
I ordered ribs. They were the worst ribs I've ever had. I mean I know this is England and the food here is abysmal when compared to the rest of the world (Europe and elsewhere) but come on! Was tasteless and had very little meat. In the menu it says ribs are smoked. I doubt it. Where is their smoker? It's probably false advertisement lies but I may be wrong. Regardless, I could have been eating air because they tasted of nothing. The only reason I am not giving 1 star is that the burgers my friends ordered were actually quite decent. Service was excellent the staff is attentive and polite. Place has nice beers/ales etc
Great food, lively bar and fantastic entertainment upstairs. The staff were really friendly and very efficient. Good value for money.
I had a nice evening meal here with my husband on New Years day.The food portions were very generous and were very tasty. We were shown to our table straight away and we ordered within 10 mins. Our food arrived fairly quickly and we both enjoyed our meals. The staff were pleasant and friendly. We will definitely go back again soon.
Have been here several times. Decor is lovely, service great. However on this occasion the quality of our food was not as good as previous occasions.
Food was overly salty so replaced. Asked for garden ate a seat but ended up next to a noisy group.
Waiting staff were friendly.
Was really great food, very good service, good late lunch early dinner. Easy eating, excellent value , all round fabulous venue. Can't wait to go back
Booked for my husbands birthday. Took our two daughters and we all had a great meal. Excellent food and my husband loved trying the taster ales!
Went with my parents for Sunday lunch at 1pm. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was incredible! We thought it was great value. I've also been with friends on a Saturday, which I would definitely recommend booking in advance, it was busy but service was quick and the atmosphere was very enjoyable.
We had a big group for a birthday meal, and we had excellent service. Food all arrived at once, staff came to take drinks orders regularly, and the food was delicious. We will definitely come back.
Booked for a Saturday night. Waited 40 mins before we were even given a menu, thankfully we’d brought drinks up from downstairs so sat chatting.
Didn’t feel rushed though and the staff were all very friendly.
My only complaint would be that we had to keep asking to have drinks replenished but not a deal breaker.
Food was expensive for what it was
Second visit to the restaurant which is on the first floor above the main bar. The food from the smoker has been my choice each time. Jerk Chicken, Pork Rack of Ribs and Short Rib all very tasty. Seasoned fries and Slaw great sides. Waitresses very friendly and attentive. Bill was reasonable.
The food arrived cold and we asked for it to be reheated. The food was far too salty, the beef ribs and fries were the saltiest which was a shame because otherwise the meat was tender and the flavour would have been nice. We won't return to eat here. On the plus side the gin bar and the real ales are a positive.
Great table, with great service to top it of with great beer. Only minor negative is no more Pilsner Urquell on tab.
Hubby and I have been working our way around the many establishments in Colchester since we moved here a year ago. What a shame we waited so long to try out Three Wise Monkeys for more than just a drink in the main bar!! Saturday night I enjoyed a Pink Pepper gin c/o the gin bar whilst hubby had an N1 craft beer. We then took advice from a group of 4 sitting next door who were loudly exclaiming that their eyes were bigger than their bellies and shared the following: Skinny fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, beef rib, ribs and the pièce de résistance slaw.
Left with full but not stuffed bellies with room for more of the fab selection of gin's and craft beers.
Best date night in a year! Thanks to Three Wise Monkeys.
Three wise monkeys was very peaceful and calm, the meal was delicous(Buttermilk chicken burger). I would go there again. the chips were covered with paprika, which made them a little bit spicy, which was lovely. they allowed you to swap out ketchup for mayo which was nice for my sister. it was a lovely meal. CMC
Thank you for the great meal :)
Big fan of this place, highly recommend it. Very good food and loads of craft/local beers to try. Friendly and chilled out vibes.
Food was good. Beer was good. Really enjoyed the night.
