Despite having my booking confirmed by email the restaurant had no record of my reservation.
I addition it was cold.
Rating would be higher if they didn’t try to sneak a service charge into the bill without telling you. It’s devious and many people would be uncomfortable with asking for it to be removed.
4 diners, mixed reviews, duck starter ok but not wow, beef cheek main excellent, bass filets average. Feeling was slightly over priced food and wine but with good service
Booked based on lunch set menu being available. Arrived only to be told they were serving Brunch. Understand if menu availability changes but then any good restaurateur would update online accordingly or inform the guest, not plonk the diner on the table with a different menu to what is expected.
small portions, staff unsure of allergens and gluten freen, told a dish was gluen free, when it arrived it has bread on it!
First visit to Tom’s Kitchen. Staff very attentive. We all ate from the fixed price menu which is also the pre theatre menu. Two courses for £20 plus a glass of Prosecco which was swopped for a small glass of house wine when asked. Nice starters and then we all had the minute steak and fries with varying degrees of success. Good flavour but chewy. Finished with a coffee and the bill was £30 per head, we had a bottle of red wine and a couple of glasses of rose. Would recommend for lunch or pre theatre otherwise it looked rather pricey.
My friend and I had a lovely pre-lunch cocktail and then shared some small plates between us. The food was really nice (can highly recommend the Macaroni Cheese with Truffle). It wasn't that busy the day we went and the service was very good.
Lovely lovely staff. The food arrived and was mixed. Our starters were amazing and were good value in terms of portion size. The mains arrived and two of our party really enjoyed them and three did not. Steaks were dry, tasteless (well any taste was masked by the overpowering burnt taste - I realise that it was a char-grilled steak but if all that you can taste is burn, is it a good idea to char-grill?). The risotto tasted like baby food. The staff made a great gesture of goodwill so I'm satisfied in that respect but won't return as the food was below par and not cheap.
Nicely presented food, moderate portion size, service was excellent.
The bread and olives were good, we definitely needed the bread with burrata we both had as a starter. Mains of pork and the duck salad were beautifully cooked and presented, and the banoffee gateau was divine.
Only criticisms would be that the crackling was too hard and the ice cream dessert was poor on presentation and very soft; ie melting in a glass!
Our waitress was patient, knowledgeable and attentive despite being very busy.
Great food in the main (crab cake starter could have done with some dressing) - but fabulous steak beautifully cooked.
Waited an hour for our starters (although very welcome compensatory bread and olives helped pass the time) - slightly disappointed that waiting staff did not know who had ordered what but stood at the end of the table and called out what they had brought.
Great wine list - very attentive pouring by staff
Had a great evening but too many niggles to rush back
Amazing as always! Great food and service. I'll be back again :-)
It was my first time at Tom's Kitchen but I certainly be back next time I am in Birmingham x
Very disappointed. Menu choice was very poor, nothing special about it at all. Didn't have the wine we wanted. Would not go again and definitely wouldn't recommend
I booked a set menu they said they could not find it i payed 93 pounds for 1 starter 2 mains 1 fresh orange juice and 1 glass of wine .
Fab place to eat. Great food. Even better service. Thanks for making our uni reunion even more special. Lovely waiter.
Good food, good service and attention to detail (especially with the fact that I was pregnant).
Would definitely go again.
Nice veteragian option and alcohol free drinks.. I had the vegetarian burger.. Was nice.. Only downfall was that the big meal comes on a board which is compact & had to ask for a place to fit all my meal on otherwise very nice :)
Couldn’t fault , full marks on all aspects will visit again .
Great service from all staff, friendly and conversational. Food is great, always a good range of chef specials too.
Slow service and horrible visibly fatty steak. Told staff and they eventually said they could see it was bad so refunded.
Ruined our night though.
We were really surprised quality and the variation of the food
Popped in pre-show, overall good experience...
Very comfortable, well designed dining room. Good service although a little bit inexperienced with very little conversation beyond the bare minimum. The 7-hour lamb (£50 for 2 to share) was excellent. Will be back!
Fabulous food, amazing service and wonderful atmosphere! Can’t recommend this restaurant enough. We will definitely be visiting again.
Impromptu birthday celebration with my son. Good service and food was of a good standard. Only issue was my main meal was warm not hot. Other than that second visit and would return again. Nice place. Three courses for 27.50 is a good deal!
Warn welcoming environment. Excellent menu choice with fresh local ingredients. Service excellent and attentive. Quality of the food outstanding and freshly prepared on site.
A great experience from start to finish. Great food and good service. Good cocktails too!
Food was good, not sure I would pay the full price but pre theatre menu was good value. Service was good however waiter tried to take my food and drink away before I had finished.
Perfect evening food &staff thank you
Food was ok, nothing was badly done but the main was lukewarm, the salmon starter had the skin left on which wasn’t great and everything felt distinctly average. Sadly the price is not and paying £4 for any potatoes or veg on top is completely excessive. Despite the decor you can’t forget you’re in a shopping centre and the staff packing up chairs while we finished our desserts really destroyed the little ambience there was. Wouldn’t head back any time soon.
My first time at Tom Aitken’s Kitchen and it will be the last. Tom would be mortified if he could see what was being served. The food would be satisfactory if this were a “Beefeater “ pub with the associated prices but it isn’t.
£28 for a poor quality steak a few pieces of watercress and some over cooked chips. My wife had a very greasy piece of fried fish. Total bill £120. Never again!!
Tom's Kitchen is an upmarket restaurant in the heart of Birmingham, located next to Harvey Nicholls! We visited on the Friday of the Mar 2018 snowstorm, so the place was a fair bit emptier than expected.
But ... everything was still good! The service was definitely a highlight - everyone who served us was polite, helpful and friendly - and not over-attentive, which can spoil some evenings.
Food was well presented and tasty. I can recommend the 7 hour lamb for 2 (be prepared to wait around 30-40 minutes, as they warn on the menu) - falling off the bone and a sizeable amount of food! The wine list is good, with a decent range of lower priced wines and wines by the glass/carafe for those who want to drink less. There is a focus on meat (which suits me) but alternatives are available (my companion had the goats cheese starter from the vegetarian offerings)
I would recommend Tom's Kitchen to others - and, indeed, already have!
Lovely restaurant located in Mailbox. Great for all occasions. Food and service was very good. We were well looked after all evening.
Good food and good service prices realistic whats not to like?
Tom's Kitchen was a great experience, the food was delicious and the staff very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our time there and I would highly recommend it for a relaxed mid week meal.
Great experience, nice vibe and super service! I really recommend.
Had Sunday brunch here which I wouldrecommend. Great variety on offer. The ham, avocado on sourdough toast highly recommended.
They also do a pretty mean Bloody Mary!
Service is discreet and efficient. A very good restaurant, and the fact it backs onto the mailbox shopping centre doesn’t detract from the enjoyment as the designer shave done a very good job of shielding the diners for the mall.
really taste bad and not cheap all food we ordered
we will never be served in this restaurant again
The wine was lovely! But the food ( we had veg burger and beef burger) was no big deal at all and a bit over-rated! I’ve had better quality burgers elsewhere!
