Unfortunately very disappointing. We ordered various tapas from the menu. Croquettas de Jamon - very small, very expensive for what we received. Saffron rice with peas and lemon was stuck together, luke warm and stodgy so we sent it back. In fact it was inedible (and did not contain one pea!) Suspect it had just been warmed up. This item was removed from our bill. Tortilla was tasty as were the slices of chorizo and onion and tomato salad we ordered. Several items were not available on the menu. Staff were standing at the bar chatting (also heard swearing). However our waitress was very friendly and provided us with good service. We noted we were the only customers in the restaurant so I guess perhaps this should have been a warning sign (although we had an early dinner booking for 5:30 pm but nobody else entered the restaurant by the time we left at at approx 6:15 pm)
Restaurant was empty and food average. Too pricy for what you get
Cocktails were nice
Great fresh tasting food. Good selection of vegetarian food. Friendly service.
The service was very slow and the food terrible. The risotto was more like an over cooked pasta than risotto. The fried squid were not fresh and had no taste. The few fish dishes were not available and thus was at 8.30pm on a Friday night.
If you’re around Exmouth market go somewhere else as the choice and level of restaurants is very high there.
The wine was good.
My experience in Tonica was wonderful.
Food was very tasty, good options, authentic spanish tapas. I recommend the croquetas and the tortilla, good quality, reasonable portions and excelent arrangement.
The service was good and attentive.
The cocktails were amazing, looking forward to come back for some more tapas and gin and tonics!
Excellent service and great food.. definitely be back thoroughly recommend
I will be back. Amazing food, great service and a great location at Exmouth Market. We were lucky enough to have an outside table and ate a fantastic lunch washed down by nice wine in the sun.
And the gin and tonics are definitely worth a go.
The ambiance is pretty but the food is bland. Drinks were good - just get a drink here :)
The service was good and the setting is lovely, very airy spacious bright conservatory feel but the food was distinctly average, with no real flavour (sorry).
Unfortunatly everything was poor. Although this is a delicately new restaurant nothing was up to scratch. A Spanish restaurant which only has one Spanish person working in it doesn’t say much to me. Everything we ordered was bland and flavourless, the Pulpo was so over cooked it was like chewing gum, the Morcilla which is a Spanish black pudding was just regular English black pudding which doesn’t taste the same at all, generally everything was under seasoned. The only present part of the meal was the olives!
I went for a birthday and this was totally forgotten about. Staff were miserable and a couple had no idea what they were doing and just said I responded with I will go and get someone else. When I have some feedback to the manager which I thought was necessary, he was rude and unpleasant! Unfortunately will never be returning and I would never recommend this to anyone.
Delicious food, lovely spot on Exmouth market. Staff were lovely and the feel of the restaurant was very nice indeed.
The menu looked amazing, but everything was quite under-seasoned. Staff were very friendly but service was a bit slow. The cocktails were fantastic. Overall the ambience was nice, but very loud once the restaurant was full.
Went with some friends for dinner. Was initially chuffed we were there in time to exploit happy hour drinks for the first round, but only included about 4 of the drinks of the menu, all of which were very small...
As someone who doesn't eat meat I was a bit disappointed. The veggie tortilla looked perfect for me but was told they had 'run out' and the risotto was a little strange - was just rice in a runny cheesy type sauce? Wasn't really a risotto at all.
The rest of the food was alright, but not great. Friends complained the chicken was underwhelming. Service also a bit slow, we had to wait a while to get the attention of our waiters for drinks at the start but once we ordered, the food came out quite quickly.
Overall we had a nice time, but the food and service could do with being improved a little.
Beautiful venue, Nice food. Fantastic atmosphere... .
No notifications of drinks in happy hour promotion, had to ask more than once.
staff vague and lacked basic English.
Food overpriced and not generous- small portions.
Was excited about this place but won’t be returning.
Great addition to this foodie street. The cocktails are generous and unusual - blue tonic water hasn't previously been found outside Spain! The small plates of food are truly scrumptious :-)
Absolutely delicious menu and completely affordable. Definitely a good spot for a catch up!
I love this restaurant, new neighbourhood gem to exmouth market. A great selection of tapas on the menu without being overwhelming. The staff know the menu well and can recommend dishes and drinks.
Love the choice of gin and tonic served Spanish style.
The food was amazing, we ordered 11 different plates in total including starters and every single dish was great! Brought to the table hot and fresh. It was the first time any of us had eaten here and the waitress was superb, very knowledgeable and helpful in our choice of dishes - everything she recommended we were very pleased with.
First visit to Tonica ... Will not hesitate to return!
Great little venue.
Some dishes where average but the majority good dishes all over and good wine menu
Great gin and tonic, food was good but nothing spectacular. Nice ambience.
Best tortilla I have had outside of Spain! Just incredible food and great value. Such a great vibe and the G&T menu was a dreammmm
We were lucky enough to visit on a soft launch with 50% off food. Everything that we tried was delicious - the highlights being the pork and the sausage rolls!
We both had a gin each before moving on to wine. The gins were both lovely and served with accompaniments to reflect their flavours.
I would definitely recommend Tonica and visit again.
All style and no substance. Waiting staff terrible, one could not pour water without spilling it everywhere and the other kept putting her arm across my face to get things. Very poor manners and shows lack of training or lacking trainer. No wit or charm. No manager evident which for a soft opening is poor form; you should be getting to know your client base. Sorry but if you want people to spend their hard earned cash its got to be better than this.
Best for students who have got money to burn and don't care about good service.
It was disappointing experience. The food menu was limited, and even so, they've already run out a few of them at around 7.30am so less choice for us. Very small portion. They put some twist on traditional menu, which we didn't care for. i.e. there was hardly any egg in 'Tortilla'
The drinks menu was long but very expensive. GT cost around £10 or more, City price.
Given the location, and there are many good restaurants in Exmouth Market, with couple of very nice tapas bars, I don't think this establishment can survive if they stay as is. I should mention their puddings were superb.
Menu was short but all the food was excellent, and well presented. Service was a little perfunctory but hoping that was due to the restaurant having just opened. Do try the G&T's!
So happy that this little gem has opened up on Exmouth Market. A great selection of fantastic food at reasonable prices and the staff are incredibly friendly. I attended the soft launch so a couple of items from the menu were unavailable but what we did have was delicious. I highly recommend the octopus which was cooked and seasoned beautifully... and of course the gin cocktails!
Can't wait to go again!
We were given such a friendly welcome at tonica and the service was top notch throughout our meal. We had our 10month old with us and they were so helpful in accommodating space for the pram, provided a high chair etc.
The drinks menu was interesting with some great non alcoholic cocktails too. The food was tasty. Some dishes were excellent, others were slightly disappointing, but as we went on the soft launch, I’m sure they are still making tweaks. Overall though we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. As is often the case with tapas, the cost does add up, but not prohibitively so and we’d definitely go back.
Nice place. Soft launch prices meant it was great value. Cocktails are expensive though ! Recommend the croquettes. Patatas bravos was a little soft.
Our recent visit to Tonic was disappointing to say the least. We had booked a table for 8pm, arrived at 7:50 and were fine with sitting at the bar to wait for 2 friends. When it reached 8:15 we asked if we could sit at our table (friends had now arrived), we were told the table wouldn't be ready until 8:30pm. This would have been absolutely understandable, however, we could see the empty table a few metres away, fully set-up and ready to go.
Pushing this aside as a soft-opening blip, we sat down at our assigned booth only to find all 4 of us (all of whom go to the gym and are reasonably athletic) were squashed between the fixed table and booth seats. It seems the restaurant had tried to squeeze two booths into a space which would comfortably have seated one.. making the entire dining experience rather uncomfortable (virtually no space between your body and the table).
Then came to ordering, we were not advised as to how many tapas to order and so, going by experience, we ordered 12 or so tapas dishes for 4 of us, with the intention of ordering more if needed. We were then disappointed to find that when dishes came there were not even one of each for each member of the table. The octopus, for example, (priced at £10 or so) came was just 3 very small pieces which then had to be thinly sliced to serve all 4 of us. The patatas bravas were equally measly, with a small teaspoon of each being distributed across our plates.
Wanting to mix and match the meat/seafood dishes with some vegetables, we ordered the Kale dish, which was listed as coming with an egg, almonds and currants/raisins. When this arrived, it came as a small bowl with 3 or 4 leaves of wilted, lifeless kale, lacking in both flavour, seasoning & any of the above accompaniments. When we alerted who i assume was the manager of this, he stated he would replace this.. throughout the meal we expected it to be replaced, only to find this did not happen and instead the dish was taken off of the final receipt.
Worst tapas I have ever had in london. Service was poor, terribly small portions, ingredients were of poor quality and cooked in a very unimpressive way. I won't be going back and would not recommend to anyone else.
My friend and I went for Tonica's soft launch (who doesn't like 50% off food?!) and we were not in a rush or expecting everything to be on point with regards to service - that is the whole notion of a soft launch - you get the benefit of a discount whilst you are their guinea pigs.
The staff were really friendly and I look forward to coming back in the future to see how they've gotten used to everything.
The food - oh my word. nom nom. The Boquerones - served in a tin, were very delicate in flavour & the grilled lemon to drizzle on top was a nice touch.
The mixed charcuterie & cheeses was lovely to nibble through out the meal, there was definitely more meat than cheese (which is unusual)
I'm not a fan of calamares in restaurants, but the texture was good & not over cooked & the squid ink mayo sauce was a nice touch - my friend ordered it.
The black pudding - was delicious, the slightly spicy sauce complimented it fantastically and the mini soft boiled scotch duck egg was tasty.
The smoked duck - is a dish I will always go for, it's rare to be on a menu. The skinless mandarin pieces didn't quite work with it for me, there could have been more pieces of the fruit for the number of duck slices.
Potatas Bravas had a nice flavoured sauce and lots of it.
My favourite dish was the pork belly, the crispy outside and the melt in your mouth with a crunchy apple pieces and puree.
We didn't have room for desserts, because we pigged out on the savoury dishes.
The drink menu was impressive, although we weren't quite convinced by the brandy and sherry espresso martini - maybe next time.
The choice of 3 sparkling wines, brut, rose, shiraz, and 1 champagne by the glass is brilliant! I can confirm the rose is tasty, the shiraz wonderful and the champers great.
The background music was barely noticiable in a great way, created atmosphere without needing for us to raise our voices. It may be different on a Friday/Saturday evening if there was a group there.
Great addition to Exmouth market. Some standout dishes on the menu and good service to match. However, Really quite pricey. Dinner for two (including one gin cocktail each) would have come in at £110. A big spend for a Monday night...
The Gin menu was sublime - one of the best G&T's I've ever had and I didn't mind paying a premium for it however the food could have been better. The vegetarian options left little to be desired however the chicken dish was crispy highly recommended by my partner. Would definitely return for drinks!
A new opening with some good food options.
We came to celebrate our engagement. The staff were very friendly and helpful with recommendations as well as providing excellent service. We are looking forward to coming back!
The cauliflower dish was exceptional and everything else of a great standard
We went for the soft launch (50% off) and I wouldn't be going back in a hurry. The food was very average, I would have been disappointed if we were paying full price, it was all quite bland. I did send one dish back, which the staff were very helpful about.
On the bright side, the drinks menu was great and the service could not have been friendlier, if a little on the inexperienced side. The decor was also lovely, and created a nice environment for a casual lunch.
Visited Tonica for its opening week. Interesting and tasty menu, we wanted to try it all!
A great selection of tapas on the menu without being overwhelming. Even though it was the opening week and obviously they were having a few very very small teething problems, the staff know the menu well and can recommend dishes and drinks. Love the choice of gin and tonic served Spanish style - we will be back!
Aware they've just opened but there are definite teething problems with the service.
Slightly chaotic at the door and a long wait for drinks (while we waited for our table). Food was served quickly but the bill took forever.
Food itself was fair. Nothing special from the dishes we had. Boquerones were tasty but not much else to report! Better tapas to be had in London for less money.
