Located in Gloucester's historic downtown waterfront community, the Topside Grill is run by chef Dennis Silva and has been open for over 25 years. Maybe a good place for lunch or a quick meal at the bar, but the food was just adequate and the decor looks pretty dated. Our waitress was very nice though.

Neighborhood place more popular for the bar then the menu. Far from the freshest seafood right across the street from the harbor. Nice people, nice two-floor space. This was Xmas Eve. Better to fully judge in season.

We had dinner after taking in a show in Rockport. I had the chowder, hot, thick and tasty...loaded with clams and potatoes. The salad was with avocado, pears, sliced almonds and goat cheese with a fig balsamic dressing that was perfect! I needed to use the warm bread to get the dressing that was left after the salad was gone! Yes it was that good! The main course consisted of mushroom stuffed ravioli in a creme fraiche sauce and a side of butternut squash, absolutely delicious! My date requested a gluten free option, sautéed shrimp vieste, with a side of fried polenta which was perfect. I had grapenut custard with whipped cream for desert, just like my memere used to make, yum! Megan was VERY accommodating, attentive and friendly. We can't wait for an opportunity to get back!

Adding Topside Grill to our list of go-to restaurants in Gloucester. Restaurant is billed as having both seafood and Italian specialties.

Our table started with steamers and scallops wrapped in bacon. Both were excellent and served hot (one of my pet peeves is getting lukewarm food).

Two in our party got baked stuffed lobsters, one got the seafood casserole and I got the fresh swordfish.

Everyone was happy with their entrees. The swordfish was cut thin which is not traditional (most times I get it in restaurants it is on the thick side). Everything was very fresh.

The menu is not cheap - the steamers were 18.99 and the lobsters were $36 I believe (they were 1.5Lbs each and it is extra for stuffed). But the food is very good so even though the atmosphere is very casual (which is fine by us), the prices are suited to higher end seafood. The wine list is not anything to write home about (6 red wines and only 1 of them is Italian)but we were able to find a champagne that we like - Nicolas Feuillatte, Brut- for $40 a bottle which is a very good price for a restaurant.

Our waitress was also quite pleasant and attentive.

Restaurant has special days like "Oyster Night" and "Crabby Mondays" - both sound wonderful. Recommend people give this restaurant a try if you are in Gloucester. Another plus - there is Plenty of parking across the street in the public lot.

I had the Scallops Diane and My wife had the Fish and Chips. I got Chowder with my meal, she got a salad. The Food was exceptional, except for the chowder which was just OK. It was a little bland for me with not a lot of clams. THe Scallops Diane was fantastic and the fish and chips were great, and even the fries were crispy and not at all soggy. The server (Holly) was great. When we asked what Coulis was she didn't know but got a small amount for us to try. She was very accomodating. It was a little pricey, $5 extra for the salad add on was a bit much and the fish and chips at $20 with no substitutions knocks this down from 5 star to 4.

We went there on Tuesday night which happened to be "Oyster Night". Oysters on the half shell were delicious. The Oyster Rockefeller were ok but not as good as we have had at other seafood restaurants. The service was great and so was the prices. We returned there later in the week because the food was so good. We highly recommend the Shrimp Scampi Flatbread.

Our family reunited for a seafood feast after the wedding at Castle Manor last night. Food was great. Everyone was pleased, even the vegetarian bride with her Strawberry salad. Rest of us feasted on fresh cherrystones, shrimp flatbread and just caught lobster. Scallops were noteworthy too. Great quality at a very fair price.

Arrived on time for our reservation. We were seated fairly quickly. We were given menus and nothing else. After about 5 minutes, we had decided. Another 10 minutes passed and no server. I happened to catch a passing server and asked if we could be served. Another 6-7 minutes passed with no server and we left. Don't waste your time here.

There were 2 guests at our table with birthdays but they messed up the birthday desserts and neither was comped. I was also hoping for a better table since we had a reservation. People walking in got a better table than us.

Took my Mother for dinner! Holly was our server, and she was amazing! We had oysters Rockefeller, local Cod and Baked Stuffed Lobster! Everything was delicious! Everyone we encountered was so nice and friendly! Will be back soon! Thank you!

Food was phenomenal!! Service- at best mediocre. We sat for 9 minutes before we were greeted by our waitress. And it was not busy at all. We never got our bread before our food. Our soups and appetizers weren’t coursed and all came out at the same time. My husband asked for a second beer 3 times, I had to look for our server to ask for a soda refill multiple times. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in the industry before. But at least acknowledge your table with a couple minutes of them being seated. And they shouldn’t have to find you to ask for a refill- check back. The food was stellar- but not a good dining experience. We should have went elsewhere.

Very nice evening.
We are locals so really don’t care about the seafood. Gloucester has always had the best seafood on the planet.
Had meatballs appetizer and Black and Tan draft beer. Super.
Meatloaf special and chicken cutlets parmigiana were our entrees.
Great food and service and excellent value.
Sorry about the fact that we have never been here before. It’s definitely good.
Nice ambiance. Super friendly service and great food. Not expensive either.
4 stars for sure.

My kids were disappointed that your regular menu items were not aviailable. No burgers or similar items for children. Some of the Mother's Day specials were interesting, but things like ham and meatloaf? Not so much.

And a It appeared to me that, in taking the opportunity to create a special Mother's Day menu, you also took the opportunity to assign high prices. I understand the need to make money when you can. But it was, I think, the most expensive family dining experience we've ever had on Cape Ann. We may return on non-special days, but not again on Mother's Day...

I would most definitely recommend this place to anyone, the food was delicious and the wait staff was very friendly very attentive to you. They came by multiple times to make sure everything was going well. Very nice ambiance in the restaurant, causal dress, but still had a nicer feel than just any restaurants. Can’t express how delicious the food was. I would go back in a heartbeat.

And they don’t tell you that when you reserve seating on Open Table and specify “must have table, no booth!” UNCOMFORTABLE for any person of above average size.

Very good food, good portion size (except for the calamari app), good service and comparable pricing to other places in the area.
Recommend the shrimp scampi flatbread app, the seafood casserole and the seafood over risotto.

Street (metered) parking and a lot across the street.
