Food was overall good to excellent .
Service was outstanding
One dish ( chicken with blue cheese) was good. The other chicken dish with mushroom was just ok. The bread crust was so hard it was like eating croutons. The portions seemed smaller than before. This experience was different from other times.
Five of us went here for dinner with high hopes for a great meal. Unfortunately - perhaps due to the virus scare - we were the only ones in the restaurant until we were leaving when 2 other people came in. Three of us had the grilled barramundi desperado, which was very disappointing as a result of the overpowering and not very good sauce. The sauce was to heavy and an overkill to what would have been a delicious grilled fish if served in jut a light butter, white wine sauce or a much lighter tomato sauce. Sadly we three disliked that so much we are reluctant to go back. However the other two in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meals - one had the veal vivian and the other the Striped Bass, so all was not lost. I really don't know if we would recommend this restaurant to others - they need to lighten up their menu a bit.
We always love our visits to Totaro - highly recommend. Enjoyed the 3 course special on this visit and it did not disappoint.
A bit of an off night. I ordered the Desperado Fish dish which I have ordered at lease a half a dozen times before. Was not properly prepared. Our other 3 meals were good.
Great food. Been here couple of times with colleagues. Service is always great. Highly recommended.
Nice atmosphere. Small but quaint dining area. Enjoyed the prixe menu selection. Have a great regular menu. Best BYOB
I had a seafood dish (Pescatore- Mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp, and lump crab, Red or White over home made pasta 29)-which was almost all mussels and some were sandy. Also the red sauce wasn't really sauce- it was large clumps of plum tomatoes. Wouldn't order that again, if I go back
My wife and I travel 45 miles from NJ to eat at this friendly, family owned, terrific Italian restaurant. Remember, 2 out of every 3 rest in NJ are Italian! And we still drive this distance! However, on Sat night it just wasn't there. This very small restaurant had 4 large parties and it was too much for their small kitchen. It spite of a herculean effort, the kitchen and staff were overtaxed. The food was still good, it just wasn't the terrific. It wasn't a normal night at TT.
Will we go back? Absolutely! Nights like last Sat pose problems for small, family restaurants. The income just cannot be turned down but the experience just isn't the same. But I think I'll ask about any large parties.
David, Thank you so much for this honest, constructive, genuine feedback. Large parties are a battle that we fight every weekend. Saturday nights are our busiest night, and we try to find the balance between accommodating those large parties, respecting the smaller tables, and remaining realistic about our capabilities. I am so sorry that your experience fell short of perfect. I really do look forward to making it up to you!
Delicious birthday dinner. Veal Abruzzi excellent. Pescatore also very good. Loved the homemade pasta. The staff was very attentive, as well as very friendly. Enjoyed everything from the delicious bread and olive oil to dessert. Highly recommend.
This is a great neighborhood go-to place for great food and a great variety of items to choose from. Everyone can find something to enjoy depending on what mood you are in. It's a family run place with lots of familiar faces and great specials each day.
Amazing bread and olive oil!!
Veggie lasagna, still awesome after all these years!! It's our go-to dinner.
Great home cooked Italian food! Good for date night or groups
Food is always amazing! Great family owned BYOB!
A wonderful little Italian BYO. The food was wonderful price is reasonable. Service was good the only negative was a little loud. Would definitely return!
We usually love this place, but this dining experience was just average. A Saturday night reservation brings with it a noise level which makes it difficult to have a conversation with a party of four. We were aware of this from previous visits, but it was especially loud this time. We were seated on time and the service was friendly and excellent. We chose to take advantage of sharing main courses for the $6 additional cost, but felt that the result was portions that were significantly smaller than when served as a single dish. We usually think the portions are large and take food home; this time that was clearly not the case. We won't share again as it eliminates the cost value of the meal; something we have always appreciated here. The food also did not measure up to its usual standards. The Caesar Salad was blah and the Veal dish while prepared well had little to distinguish itself. The dessert's were excellent. "Grandma's Cake" is always a winner in whatever form it takes. The cannoli's were very good although obviously frozen or stored at a very cold temperature at one point.
We will return, but probably during the week to avoid the noise issue and won't be sharing a meal again. The restaurant stays on our list of local places to go.
Neighborhood gem, great food, love trying their daily specials
The food is delicious the chef and waitstaff divine. Ali, Victoiria, Donna and Vince should be complimented. Bravo.
Only for weekday dinner - it was sat. we had 7 pm reservation for 4 - waited an hour. it's super small - they allowed a large huge party of about 25 next to us in this teeny tiny place. It was ridiculous. everyone waiting, and anxious. food was mediocre. Service lovely.
This restaurant is a neighborhood gem. Wonderful atmosphere and great food- lunch is best time to go because prices are lower than weekends.
The atmosphere, the service and most of all the food were outstanding. By far our favorite Italian restaurant in the area.
No complaints it’s very cozy and a great place for BYOB. All waitresses were awesome and fast! The food was very good. What was important to me it was piping hot coming from the kitchen!
Totaro's is a bit expensive, but the food is excellent. My one problem is the low lighting - sometimes it is difficult to see what I am eating.
Nice BYOB for classic Italian food. The restaurant would be even nicer if they added something to absorb the volume that we experienced when the place was full.
Very hectic checking in we were at a very small 4 top. Everyone seemed to come at once. Food was great as always.
The food, service and atmosphere were outstanding!
Great meal with great friends! Awesome byob.
This place is fantastic- in every way and it’s BYOB! Will return frequently.
Nice experience. Wished we had known ahead of time that it was BYOB.
Great neighborhood place. Good food and friendly atmosphere.
I have tried this place twice, its a local find, and I really want to like it! BUT.. they are not organized. service is spotty, longer waits for even bread and Ice water. The food when it finally arrives is great. homemade pasta... etc.. I went on aSaturday night, I'll try again on a week night! This could be a real contender if they address some issues.!!
Good service and great food, seating is a lil tight but overall had a great time.
Food was excellent, service was good, seating was a little tight, overall had a good time, will come back.
have been there for lunch and dinner. excellent food.
The food is mostly homemade, including some of the pasta and desserts! It's family owned and operated so the home touch is there. The place is very small and the tables are cramped, but it kinda adds to the home feeling for the most part...we've mostly gone for lunch, but the last time was for dinner and the portions were very generous and the service was still good, considering there were many "holiday" gatherings going on.
Service was great, food was pretty good. The person I was with felt the swordfish was not adequately seasoned. The seating area is very small and there was a group of 5 people in the room or who extremely loud and oblivious to the fact the there were other people in the restaurant.
Always love it here. (fifty characters are needed to qualify as a review)
