This was our second visit and it certainly won't be our last. The food is amazing and very fresh. The staff are friendly and professional. Very reasonable for the portion size.
Great find! Recommended to us through a friend. Not a cheap meal but some of the best sushi we've ever had - lovely staff and quick service .
Crackin’ little restaurant with a lovely ambiance and excellent food!
Birthday celebration - staff are super friendly, prices are fantastic, vibe and decor is fabulous, food could be fresher and a tad yummier
I'll start off by saying that the appearance of the restaurant is great its nice and cosy, however when I compare the food to other ramen/ sushi restaurants it falls short I'm my opinion I thought that the broth didn't have much really going for it (as my partner described she felt like she was drinking dish soap) it was lacking some sort of kick or a bit of zaz it was very plain. The sushi I won't really comment on as it was my first time trying sushi and for all I know it could be some of the best and that it's just not for me, and finally the service the main thing was that we felt ignored, I'm sure you know the "annoying" question that comes when you are at a restaurant and in the middle of eating, the infamous "is everything ok for you" that question was never asked and all the staff looked confused as of what to do. I really wish the best for this restaurant as it truly dose have a nice vibe.
Sushi and rolls are very good. But you can choose a lot of dishes...
Really enjoyed the food, service was great and atmosphere was nice. Would recommend.
Good food and nicely prepared but very expensive for what you get.
Good and service was outstanding
Such an awesome experience, the best sushi I’ve had on a long while. The sashimi was so fresh it was perfect! And no wonder their spicy chilli ramen is listed as a favourite, it’s out of this world. 5 STARS!
Really lovely Sushi place.
Don’t often do Sushi, so asked the manager what we should go for. Was tempted by a load of sushi for 2 on a set menu, but he told us that would be too much and to just order the chef special for nearly half the price. It really was lovely.
Also was a tad worried as we had high seats in a kinda alcove but it didn’t matter at all. Kinda made it easier to chat and share the food.
So meal for two, with drinks, including a cocktail and service charge which was optional but was really happy to pay was about £80.
Would definitely go again.
As avid Studio Ghibli fans, when we were looking for a sushi bar to visit during our trip, there was nowhere we wanted to try more than Umai. The only thing that would have made the ambience more serene was if Howls Moving Castle was playing in the background. The food was stunning, slightly more than we could manage but that's more a fault of my eyes than the menu. Staff were attentive and kind. Very impressed. I would definitely return, perhaps more for lunch than for dinner.
Really good sushi! Enough said!
Overall it was okay. The rice on the sushi was quite mushy and the fish eg salmon wasn’t very fresh. My experience might have not been as great as I went to another Japanese restaurant the day before which was exceptional.
The staff are fantastic, super friendly and attentive. We even got a free dessert at the end which was nice.
Great food and excellent ambient. We celebrated a special occasion; the staff was very attentive and send us a dessert. We had an amazing time! And the portions are quite good
Sushi was decent. Giving 1 star as I was incorrectly charged 20 pounds for a No show policy and although I have contacted the restaurant several times this has not been resolved after more than a month now.
Food was amazing. Highly recommend
The food was very good!
Male waiter/supervisor was quite rude, bordering on inappropriate/creepy. when we asked that he check on our order after waiting 20mins, he rudely responded “it’s coming. sushi takes time ‘darling’” in a patronising tone. i doubt he would have done the same had we been male. He made the experience very uncomfortable.
Lovely cosy place with friendly staff and good food :)
Top quality sushi at a great price
The portions were a good size, the food didn't taste amazing there are definitely better sushi restraunts in Edinburgh. I ordered 3 dishes and only 1 that came was right. The service was pretty hot and cold to be honest but certainly not the worst place I've ever been.
Sushi was really good and fresh however tonkatsu ramen was really disappointing and not at all representative of authentic tonkatsu ramen. The tempura was also not authentic as it was not breaded in the normal Japanese way
Very good Me and my Wife was enjoy the food 🍱 was fanatastic
El sushi muy bueno pero el chico atendiendo era rough haha no tenía buenas habilidades serviciales
All staff so lovely and food is just outstanding, my fave place to go and always bring and recommend this place
Brilliant place, it is a little piece of Japan. Food is excellent and the staff is very kind and helpful.
Best sushi in edinburgh. Im a regular. Such good value, well presented and laid out. The sushi is beautiful
I left Umai feeling that the majority of the food we sampled (mainly sushi) was not as good as the competition in Edinburgh. Whilst it wasn't bad it just was a bit bland compared with Umi or bentoya for example. Nothing really stood out...in saying that I would visit again but just not as a priority
Love the food, love the decor, etc. Always a pleasure to go back!
First visit to Umai Sushi & Ramen Kitchen - really enjoyed it. Delicious food, beautiful presentation and friendly, helpful staff. Thanks to the whole team for the experience.
Good food, great vibe and awesome service. Definitely a to go place to get sushi and ramen
A great little addition to the Edinburgh food scene.
Lovely food and really original take on sushi! Will definitely be returning!

Great place for dine for !
Amazing Atmosphere and staff very professional!
Wonderful place, stylish and lovely ambience. Food is to die for. Best sushi in Edinburgh.
Food was plated beautifully. Taste was delicious and really fresh. The restaurant had a cool Studio Ghibli vibe which I loved! - if you’re a fan of Totoro you’d love this place! So so cute 💛
Amazing sushi, very helpful staff and beautiful décor :) Would definitely recommend it.
The food was excellent - we will definitely go back
