Japanese
Umaya, where East meets West in a plethora of Japanese inspired small & large dishes. We focus on drawing from the simplicity of flavor in fresh ingredients, while giving it a Western flair. Specializing on the popular Japanese ‘street food’ - think small 'tapas' style dishes that are easy to share amongst friends & family. Our Izakaya grill features a one of a kind charcoal brick that is imported from Japan & allows for the natural flavors of the proteins & vegetables to radiate.

Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Well with the current pandemic and finally some restaurants are opening back up. We had to come back to our favorite place. Victor was back in action, he still remembers our go to cocktails. They’ve added some new items and we tried them all, along with our sushi/sashimi platters with some very well recommended sake.

They practiced social distancing, floor stickers in place, tables closed to main ring distance, face masks and gloves worn by everyone inside and they provided us with hand sanitizer. Along with their contactless menu.

Flavors are still on point and I can’t get enough of my lamb chops and she can’t get enough of her sushi.

Needless to say, you will feel safe and comfortable at Umaya!

This place has never failed me even during pandemic, foods were up standard as usual. The employees were very careful and doing their best to protect customer.
Overall I really enjoyed our dinner and will continue to patronize this venue.

This is hands down one of the best sushi restaurant in DC area ! Their food is very reasonably priced with our sacrificing the quality. Even with COVID-19, they still maintaining their usual standard. Very impressive !! For sure will be back soon for the support.

Rarely have I given a negative review of a restaurant but Umaya made sure that I did. The server disappeared on us for a time, the first glass of wine was awful, the crab salad had tons of shell in it, the Hamachi was not only not fresh but served at room temperature like it had sat out all night, and the rolls were simply bad. I hope it was just an off night for them but it definitely ruined a night of vacation for us!

I think that the food was just OK, but overpriced. I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, but it felt less of restaurant quality. The broth tasted like a boullion was dropped into water and there were very small quantities of mushrooms and corn. We also ordered the Whole Squid which was tender, but the taste is less appealing. I have had better Ramen around the area. Our server was ok, but NEVER asked about us nor the food that we were eating. The receptionist also took her time (about 5 minutes) in getting us a reserved seat. She said that she was trying to get her "online" order to work. Understandable, but she should really tend to customers already walked-in, with a reservation, and waiting for her attention.

Been away for a while but had to come back to my spot. This was a fast lunch. However the service was impeccable, Vonny recommended some new dishes that they are trying out and they came out quickly and were devoured just as fast.

The service was slower than expected considering it wasn’t a busy night. And there was a confusion with splitting the bill. The food was good they do not skimp on ramen size and the food came out pretty quick. The service just could have been better.

Slow service likely due to the Valentine’s Day holiday, took the server 25 minutes to initially approach our table even for the initial water. The food was good when it eventually came. It seemed to be slow at all the tables around us as well.

I made a reservation here for Valentine's Day and was seated next to the bathrooms and kitchen. I sat there for about a minute before the chef shouted too much and I asked to be moved to a different seat. They told me they had a lot of reservations but could seat me next to the front door. I told them I was one of the reservations and would like not to be seated by the bathrooms or door but they only offered me those. I ended up sitting near the door. They forgot the soup and salad that came with one of the meals, but the waiter was nice enough to comp our drinks because of that. Overall it was a mediocre experience, but our server was incredible.

The Hamachi Kama... I sat at the bar during lunch and the bartender was good. I ordered the Octopus Kara-Age and it was pretty good. Like a fried calamari dish. I also got the Hamachi Kama... I have had this before and it was as good this time as it was the first time that I had it. Delicate white fish served with a great ponzu type sauce. The Hamachi Kama is great and I have no more descriptors for this dish. Plan on returning for lunch soon.

The food was excellent to share with 4 people.

Slight sparse surroundings but pleasant and the staff were excellent.

Share the many small dishes and the shushimi was fresh and full of flavour.

The food was great and our waiter was helpful and attentive. Half of our party ordered sushi and the other half ordered rice bowls. We were hoping the main dishes would arrive together, but the sushi plates were several minutes behind the bowls. We arrived early to our reservation but we were seated immediately (note: it was not at all busy).

Went here for lunch and was seated at the bar. Service was good and the bartenders definitely were willing to share their food favorites. A great sign. Had the Robatayaki, which are basically skewers. Had the baby octopus, good but a little on the chewier side. Had the miso sea bass on recommendation, well worth it. Very tender and flavorful. Also on recommendation, had the Hamachi kama. Oh, it was good... Tender and flavorful. Well worth the investment. I have been here a few times and always find something good. This place is starting to make lunch decisions hard...

Showed up for an 11:30 AM reservation, only to find out that the restaurant doesn't open until noon on Saturdays. Except that OpenTable, Google, and their own website say they open at 11:30 AM on Saturdays. Maybe fix that, and don't take reservations for times when you're not open?

Been here a couple of times before and it’s normally very good. Tonight it was loud and the staff seemed rushed. Asked to be moved further from the bar but was told that those tables were for a large party but no one ever showed up. Most importantly we found metal in the miso soup. The waiter wanted to significantly reduce our charges but management would let him.

The food and service were excellent, however the ambiance is poor due to the windows letting in so much Street light at night. There is a garage opening directly across the street and every time a car comes out of the garage, the entire restaurant lights up with the headlights. There are also several other light sources that filter inside that detract from the experience.

All this is probably much better during the day time.

Really enjoyed the meal from the appetizers to the main courses, everyone loved the food. Service was great. My only wish is to go into a restaurant and NOT see a bunch of large screen TV's. It so changes the tenor of the evening. But the management was very nice and turned off the one that was closest to us, which helped tremendously.
