Waiter was sarcastic and steak was undercooked. The restaurant is advertised as pre-theatre but doesn't do that menu on a Saturday evening which seems odd. I would also think twice about this restaurant for anyone with mobility issues since the stairs are quite narrow (there is a downstairs as well) and the women's toilet has a sign warning about an unsafe step (I don't know if there are customer toilets downstairs but worth checking).
The service was attentive and the food was excellent especially the desserts.
A lovely experience to celebrate my birthday.
good food, good service.
i went there my a friend and was super! we ate fish as starter and main; also the desserts are good
Very good restaurant. Superb service and excellent food
The quality of food, price and service were excellent.
The food and the service were both very good and we both enjoyed our meals very much. We have been to the restaurant before and will be doing so again.
The best place for food in Cambridge. Really good and tasty meals without breaking the bank
Service was very efficient and pleasant. Food good without being outstanding. Very steep narrow stairs - I should have mentioned that I have mobility problems. Noise level rose significantly when a large party with children arrived. Toilets very cramped.
We had a very enjoyable meal on a Saturday evening. The waiters were very welcoming and the service was friendly and attentive. The food was of a high standard and everything was tasty and presented attractively. We liked the restaurant itself and it had a good ambiance. We would certainly come back.
Spent a lovely leisurely birthday lunch. Service was brilliant, food lovely and good value. Very few people in there, but apparently is busy in the evenings. Didn’t spoil my experience at all. Will go back again and would recommend it!
Excellent service and value on the pre theatre menu. I was spoilt for choice.
The vegetarian starter, courgette fritters, was three tiny bites, and tasted ordinary when I expected delicious. The vegetarian main course of stuffed 'smoked' aubergine with cheese lacked any flavour of smoke, and comprised half an aubergine stuffed with tomato and onion (from recollection), with no accompaniments (no carbs whatsoever).
The price was steep. I was still hungry and I have a modest appetite. I think the calorie value should be written on the menu so that Diners could expect to order other food (or go to another restaurant that does not mind providing a plate of food that is balanced and satisfying). What I had felt like 500 calories, for £40.
I suggest that vegetarian food should be accompanied with whole grain rice or other wholesome items. I do not want to have to order a plate of chips or a fatty sugary dessert just so as to not starve.
This was my second time visiting Varsity. My first visit I enjoyed, this time, not really.
Thoroughly enjoyed this special meal out to celebrate our son's birthday.
Flavours and presentation of food were gorgeous. We all loved our dishes.
The waiter was gracious, informative and attentive.
The only challenge in the venue is the low height of the staircase, which our tall sons only had to tackle once as we arrived and left. We had a lovely upstairs table by the window, situated just the right distance from others to give privacy and make the occasion special for us.
Would definitely recommend.
Nice menu but food a bit hit-and-miss. Nice buzzy atmosphere and superb service
We had a most enjoyable meal. The meal was not rushed, the food was excellent and with service to match. Already recommended family members to visit. Overall very good value for money.
Amazing food, excellent service. Thank you, my husband and I really enjoyed it
Lovely lunch and attentive staff. Great value for a beautiful plate of food.
We were going to a show at the Corn Exchange and so opted for the pre-theatre which was good value at £15.50 for 2 courses. We had a very friendly welcome, were given water without asking followed by bread and olive oil and service was excellent throughout. The food was beautifully presented which I don't usually notice. More importantly it was delicious. We washed it down with a very quaffable shiraz. Would definitely go back.
High end food, service and knowledgeable waiter staff.
Great service and fantastic food. Highly recommend
Fabulous as always!
Had a great meal here with my incredibly fussy Mother, who commented that someone in the kitchen really knows what they’re doing. Everything we ordered was delicious with a real depth of flavour and attention to detail. The staff were attentive and warm without over fussing. Highly recommended.
This restaurant is very good not a long way from outstanding or perfect
Good value for money. Wines are not as sometimes overly priced
Food was very good, innovative colourful with Tasty vegetables
Restaurant setting is nice . A nice dinner, Thanks !
Great friendly service. Food was excellent, warm and fresh. Nice time between courses, not rushed at all. Good choice of wine at reasonable prices. Our waitress was lovely, very friendly and gave us some good info about Cambridge.
A Good Friday family dinner prior to going to see Whitney - Queen of the Night at the Corn Exchange. One of our favourite Cambridge restaurants: great food and wine, attentive service and a fair price all things considered. Looking forward to our next visit
First visit to Varsity having read the positive reviews. Fairly limited menu but everything we chose was of a very high standard. Busy on a Saturday night and we can understand why.
Lovely food, drink and good service from all staff.
For sometime now this has been my favourite place to eat in Cambridge. Completely unpretentious and mention has to be made about the friendly, obliging staff. Although the food is of similar quality to the sister restaurant, it is the staff at The Varsity that make the difference.
Amazing food, wine and service. Can not recommend this place highly enough.
Had a very pleasant meal on a week night with my wife. Food was superb.
A special birthday occasion. Service both highly efficient/accurate and informal/relaxed, just how I like it. Food was of highest quality, on hot plates, appealing presentation. Would return frequently if we lived closer.
Superb food served by friendly and charming staff. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone
Great service, nice table, food good. Lovely experience
Great food, relaxed atmosphere, and non intrusive service. Would definitely book again.
The food was extremely tasty and well-prepared, however we waited about 20 mins before the waiter brought out bread (not even our starters), and the noise level was very loud. Otherwise a very good meal.
Varsity, Cambridge - first visit, warmly received and efficiently settled. One a la carte and one pre - theatre menu (from which my companion chose squid, mushroom risotto and crème brulee - all pronounced delicious). My scallops, cod and crumble were also well - cooked and attractively presented, complemented by glasses of southern French white and coffee - all for a reasonable price.
We were very pleased with our choice for Sunday lunch. We all had beef which was perfectly cooked with a good selection of veg. The puddings were outstanding. The building is quaint and well converted. Could not fault the service
As Londoners we rarely come to Cambridge, but we eat out in many other cities. The menu at Varsity is intriguing and the dishes were delicious, with imaginative use of vegetables. Flavours were introduced through sauces and “dirt” that made for a varied and stimulating experience. Service was friendly and efficient. Tables are close together but we enjoyed interacting with intelligent neighbours. Recommended.
We arrived early for our table which was not a problem and a bonus for us as we were able to take advantage of the pre theatre meal deal. We had two superb courses . While we were waiting for our food they gave us a delicious bread with dipping oil. The service, food and ambiance were all perfect. We will definitely be back and have already recommended the restaurant to friends and family.
Weekday lunch for two; interesting menu - very enjoyable food. Waiting staff had a good level of attentiveness without interrupting unnecessarily. Two course lunch was extremely good value for money. Will go again and also try out Trinity Restaurant. Thank you.
