Village Grill - Village Hotel Hull
I am a member at the village gym and always come for spa day and and lunch with my friends as i love it here at Hull village. I decided to book a meal for my dad's birthday last Sunday for 6 of us as a supirse for him and what a supirse we had. We ordered 4 roast dinners and 1 child main and 1 main off the normal menu. My fathers meal and sons meal came out 35 mins before our roast dinners which we was not happy about as by the time they arrived my father had finished his dinner. When the carvery came we asked for all of them on plates and got them all on woodern boards. 3 beef dinners came out and my nephews dinner roast turkey didn't... He then had to wait another 10 mins for his dinner and another 5 for extra Gravey... They apologised and gave is a round of free drinks which didn't really cut it but we was grateful. The staff looked petrified and unsure of what to say or do and it was because of them not telling the kitchen 2 tables where put together and we had finished our starter everything where so bad. We then ordered deserts 2 hours later. We got a gluten free ice cream and 3 chocolate brownie and Icecream. 2 brownie came out but my sons Ice cream and my desert was missing so then we had to complain again. We could not beleive it. They then came back out 5 mins later after my mum and nephew finished there dessert to tell me they had ran out of brownie and they forgot to do the Icecream. I was fuming by this point as you can imagine. I decided to have the chocolate cake instead. When it finally came out it was frozen cold with cream not hot. i was gutted but i was that mad my dad's birthday was ruined i left it. They said sorry for the bad service and mess and wiped the bill which of course they had no other choice really as it was that bad they even began to laugh at some of there own team members. The whole experience was a disaster. Im suppose to book a meal for 8 in December for a girls night but now im not so sure. So disappointed.
The Sunday lunch was average , I would rather have it on a plate. This is because the food goes cold quicker & it’s hard to eat the food when you need gravy on your meat & Yorkshire puds. Poor value for money. The lounge and grill bar was full of football fans cheering on the teams (Sunday 20oct) so went out to country park for evening meal (5 mins drive away). And found it much better food ...I think it’s a bad idea to have the locals take over the bar and grill when football is on the TVs...
I booked a table for four the food was rubbish and cold waste of £80.
Little selection of curvery only roast beef that was hard to eat and no roast turkey
Only three veg carrots was cold and not eatable .
Very sad to see a nice hotel with such horrible food .
Avoid avoid avoid
After sundays visiting definately would NOT recommend here to anyone again. The prices have gone up yet the food choice and quality was less.. def not worth it and felt like we had wasted our money.
i have been before and enjoyed it but not this visit.the roast potatoes and the veg were not good at all .the starters were a bit tasteless and the puddings were just cream will not be going again.sorry
We arrived for our booking at 4.30. We sat for nearly 10 minutes with nobody coming to greet us. I eventually asked someone how it worked and was told to go to the bar.
We all ordered Carvery and went to get starters. As soon as we had all got some starters they were cleared away. Same with the main course and we were then asked if we’d finished with the puddings. Also half way through our meal the football volume was turned right up.
I understand that the Carvery has to end at some point but if you are booking people in for the last slot at least let them finish. I guarantee we didn’t pay any less than the people who came earlier and no doubt got a much better service.
Also a lot of the food had clearly been sat there a while and was very dry!
Shame as the room was fantastic and the kids eat free was good value!
I was very unimpressed with your 'refurb'; the room was noisy, overcrowded and did not give out the right atmosphere in which to enjoy a Sunday lunch. Make your mind up, Village, are you cinema, restaurant or bar meals? Not everyone wants to be bombarded with football whilst eating, the games were loud and intrusive, coming from every corner of the room. There was no escape!Food was, at best, average- so called roast potatoes dry, no flavour, poor choice of meat, other veg dry and tasteless. No hot puddings and kiddies ice cream none existant. Starters left a lot to be desired . Yes, it was cheaper than before, but was only worth what we paid, if tthat.I shall not be returning and would not recommend.
Booked a table for the evening thinking we would be seated in the nice restaurant/grill which is usually what happens. Instead we were seated in the pub with all the Friday night drinkers who were noisy.
Food was lovely, and good value but wasn’t the right atmosphere for a nice meal
Very loud not much choice and food wasn’t very nice did complain was a lot better in the other room not the bar as it is now
It's the first time we have visited for a while. We booked thre Sunday lunch as we enjoyed it on previous occasions.
It's moved to a new room and not as much choice, we felt the old format in the other room was a lot better.
After previously having a meal at the village,, we booked a meal .
On entering the hotel the restaurant had moved ,, into a sports bar with about 10 TVs ,, to loud to enjoy a Sunday lunch,, the food, to put it polite was about the worst I have eaten to anyone who reads this ,, have a look at the food before handing over your well earned cash
It had changed where the carvery was served to the busy pub area. It was supposed to be an anniversary meal but felt like we was in the middle of a busy loud pub. The food wasnt great, roast potatoes looked Ill. There was Trifle fornpudding, but it was frozen! It was really disappointing.
The all you can eat buffet lunch was great! Good selection both for children and adults.
The noise level was rather high, more to do with the design and acoustics of the restaurant, rather than the clientele and TV’s that were on.
There was no one there to serve the meat when we went to get our food, so were unsure on what to do, yet after a few minutes, a gentleman came out to carve for us.
It’s a small space where the food is, yet decent enough. Not a huge selection of vegetables, however for the price, and the quality of food, it’s very good.
My little ones loved that there was fresh fruit to eat.
We had asked for a high chair in the comments when booking, however this was not at our table when we arrived, and we had to ask for this, as they are kept in another location, however the staff and service was excellent and they resolved this straight away, and they were great with the kids, bringing them a fantastic activity pack each to keep them entertained.
It’s comfortable, the price is spot on for the selection, especially with young children eating free, as they just had some of the starters and some fruit.
A great location to meet family coming from outside of Hull, as easy to find.
We will definitely come again.
We also stayed for coffee afterwards in the cafe area which was nice and relaxing.
We had also mentioned when booking that t was a special occasion for a wedding anniversary, yet there was nothing extra added or made special to celebrate this, so one other thing missed, yet didn’t spoil the experience.
This was one of my favorite carvaries in Hull not any more!!!!!! The have moved it into the bar area... Cold. Noisy impersonal.. Large tvs too many..... You have ruined this hotel with the impersonal feel will not visit any more. Even reception mechanical
Had the Sunday lunch at the Village before in the back room, really enjoyed it, food and atmosphere was spot on! this Sunday gone really can't say I enjoyed any of it.
Good food portions, very clean as newly refurbished.
Donna was super attentive and knowledgeable, she made the meal with her kindness.
A little noisy for us, would benefit from a quieter restaurant where the old breakfast room was and then it would be just perfect.
Now moved into the front of the building. The decor is really nice but it felt quite cramped and it wasn’t even full. The location of the carvery station is too close to the starters so if you want to get to the starters you have to navigate the queue of people for their mains.
Staff were friendly but seems very rushed. Food was good and the price wasn’t too high for what you get.
Preferred the previous location but it’s okay for an everyday meal location.
Was really nice food will be going back, wish I knew where all the bits where hidden
Pre booked a table and despite arriving slightly late of the booking time we were still accommodated. Staff were very welcoming and engaged in conversation with us in between ordering and our meal being served. Food was lovely, no complaints from myself or my partner. The only thing that down our meal slightly was maybe around 5/6 different staff members approached our table whilst we were eating asking If all was ok. Whilst we didnt mind the a couple of times we found that we were being interrupted for this reason. Nothing major. Maybe something which could be worked on and instead approach with like an approval smile. Other than that excellent service and we shall be sure to return.
I csn really recommend the Sunday Carvery especially if you are vegetarian.
We had the carpet, the roast beef and gammon were nice, as was all the vegetables except the roast potatoes. The roast potatoes had no colour to them, they were just white. There wasn’t a very good range of sweets either. Both my wife and I wanted a hot sweet but there were only 3 cold sweets available. We both had a small trifle, but have tasted better ones from Sainsbury’s.
The hotel itself appeared busy but we were the only diners in the large restaurant throughout our visit. Staff were excellent, very friendly and efficient but the food was dreadful. The sea bass was tasty but the accompanied pak choi was charred but raw and inedible. The two extra side dishes consisted of two florets of reheated broccoli with shavings of Parmesan, and six, admittedly delicious, chips. My order of chicken and vegetable skewers was very disappointing. The chicken was white despite being “chargrilled” and most uninviting. The vegetable skewer was virtually raw and inedible. The bowl of rice and vegetables was tasty but sat in a pool of liquid which spoiled it completely. I suspect this dish had been microwaved. This was not an expensive meal, but at £18 for main courses and £4 each for sides, it was not cheap, especially as my husband had to stop for fish and chips on the way home as he was starving (we did not have puddings as we would normally do as we thought they would be on the same level as the main courses).
I have been advised that the restaurant is due to undergo some sort of revamp in the near future so hopefully no one else will feel as disappointed as we did
Lovely food. Timings were very good; not too quick which gave us chance to chat. I booked through open table and wrote in the requests box that it was our anniversary. We were soon brought over 2 complimentary glasses of Prosecco. Might have been nice to have some music on as there were not many people in the restaurant. Ordered 2 courses from the set menu which was great value. Portions were very big.
lovely food would recommend to everyone. before I went I looked at the reviews and there's was load of bad ones we thought we will still go to see what its like and all I can say is wow the food was lovely. will be defo going back again before the offer comes of on the 3 course cavery
We had paid for dinner, bed and breakfast and so we're only able to order from the set menu but this wasn't a problem as there was a fair bit of variety. My food was lovely but my husband said his burger was quite dry and he couldn't finish it. We were a table of 2 sat next to a large group of ladies with no background music so we felt that we couldn't have a private conversation without being overheard. The staff and service were excellent. The food arrived quickly after ordering, as did the drinks. Would revisit but would maybe ask to pay more to have access to the full menu.
On arrival the restaurant was empty with a lot of staff stood around chatting . It took around 15 minutes for drinks to arrive which I didnt find acceptable . The starters were nice and plenty to choose from .
The carvery was lovely and couldnt fault it . We had to ask for plates to be taken away as starter and main course plates were piled up on table . No one asked if the food was ok .
The desserts were a complete disappointment and i asked for a hot pudding to be told "Were not doing them cos its warm outside "
Yet they were serving a hot carvery .
I passed on the pudding as nothing I wanted out of 2 choices.
Again lots of staff stood around but no one available to help with ice cream dispenser for my daughter .
Overall the main course was nice but the service and desserts were a great disappointment.
I have been here many times and noticed a significant change
Good service food great fantastic overall. Staff very attentive to our needs nothing was too much trouble
Seemed short staffed on Sunday. Which is unusual. We had to ask for somebody to take our drink order, clear the plates & fathers day.
Never had this on Mother's day!
The meat was try and hard the Yorkshire pudding was like rubber all the veg was dry me and my partner left the full lot. Most of the starters where empty and the little bread cakes where hard and not fresh at all and to top it of the ice cream machine was just like milk it was really watery we where so disappointed. The girl who took our drink order tried adding another tables drinks on to ours because she got there’s wrong
Satania was great but the food was limp and watery gravy
Service was okay had to wait for drinks , starters and sweets okay but carvery very disappointing.
Sunday carvery was lovely. The desserts were nice. The starters were ok. The drinks were poor...flat coke. And overpriced wines.
Lovely food and huge portions in a very nice setting.
Normally I love eating here so I’d still come back as usually very good. I felt because we arrived later in the day the staff were looking to leave. Also the food that was dry and if I wanted a cornetto for desert I couldn’t because they were lying in melted ice cream. Have the waffles gone? We used to love them at the end of the meal or were we too late?
Will come earlier nxt as time we booked for 4.15 but the starter and pudding choice were limited not much left at all the carvery was vary nice and staff were lovely but we felt rushed as they were waiting to clear up ready for the evening soup starter was delicious x
You have to try and believe me you don't be disappointed
Over priced carvery! No longer a hot pudding included. The soup starter was cold; and the main carvery itself was cold too; lack of choice on vegetables. Table booked for 4pm greeted with the incorrect booking name and at 4.50pm the staff starting to clear away the tables and chairs around us making us feel like we had to leave and making us feel very uncomfortable whilst they packed up for the day. Overall rubbish experience; this was our 3rd visit and we will not visiting again.
We haven't been to the Sunday lunch buffet for quite a while and were disappointed in the range available, it does not seem to be as vast as it used to be. The chocolate fondue was the most disappointing, instead of warm chocolate sauce , it was a pouring sauce from a bottle. And it was Easter Sunday and there was no lamb which would have been nice
Excellent food and great service made it very special for my mother thank you
Very enjoyable, seemed very organised. Will definitely go again!
