Village Pub & Grill - Village Hotel Cardiff
Staff are friendly and can’t do enough for you, however the food was terrible. Been going to this hotel for a few weeks and never had an issue but this week they had changed the menu. The starters were awful, which consisted of breakfast items, the dinner was ok gravy a little runny but no mash potatoes. Cauliflower cheese was dry. Then we had a a choice of a muffin for dessert. £15.00 per adult. Their new menu was awful. The staff also informed us we were not the first who had complained about the change and The food. Very disappointed
Good comfortable seating with a great view of the tv (sports) if that suits. The chef gave my lad a high five and showed him the ice cream machine which brought a big smile...
the starters and main plus desert were all unbelievable value for money..
We will be back as it don’t cost that much more than cooking a Sunday lunch at home and there’s no washing up...
Love this hotel - have stayed and dined here many times and it never fails to impress me x
Fabulous food, nice portion sizes for starters and deserts and the carvery was lovely. Very attentive staff and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Great value for money!!
Staff were rude, did not make our experience enjoyable. Will not be returning
Been to a lot of village hotels but worst one I been to
Excellent value and service! Thank you for making our Anniversary experience one to remember.
Lovely evening meal with my young daughter. Service was good and food was excellent. It was very loud however due to rugby and football matches being on. It’s s shame the main restaurant doubles as a sports bar.
Horrified to find the restaurant is also the sports bar!
Had a lovely waiter couldn’t praise him enough. He was more knowledgeable than the senior staff. Terrible service when we tried to pay the bill, was told to go back to our table until they could take our money. When I refused, as I didn’t we didn’t want to walk through the spirts bar again, we were told to sit in the coffee shop and someone would come to us to take payment. Tried to buy coffees but staff unable to take a £50 note! After 20 minutes I returned to find our helpful waiter, he was able to take our payment with no problems. Was thinking of booking for lots of events there including Christmas lunch. Pity they can’t get their act together!
Booked afternoon tea for a table of 4 for my wife's 60th Birthday. Waited 15 mins at the desk to be seated, I stopped and asked a waitress and was shown a table. After 20 mins we asked for our food when different waitresses asked "have you told anyone you were seated?" I replied "Yes, we were shown to this table". she said 'I will get someone". We were sat by a table of 11 women on a hen weekend so you can imagine the noise. Another person came up to us saying they had no record of our booking so I showed him my confirmation email and he went away and returned later with tea/coffee. Food arrived 10-15 mins later. We noticed, according to the menu, some items missing! I informed a waitress and was told "I'll go and check". Lo and behold 10 mins later a chef came out and plonked a plate down and said "sorry". Several minutes later a waitress asked if we had finished and could she take any plates away! We were then asked if we would like a glass of "FIZZ" as a way of them saying sorry. My daughter said "yes we'll have a bottle". Again a waitress was hovering over us looking to clear the table.
When we finished we waited to see someone to ask for the bill but everyone was busy setting up tables for the night so I went to the bar to pay. I waited for 10 mins whilst people who came after me were served first! Finally I was asked by a young boy "what do you want?" I said "I'd like to settle the bill for tables 57/58". He tapped the till screen, walked away, fiddled with a small box, could not open it so called another staff member over and it opened. He came back, asked for my bank card, handed me a small plastic key asking "do you want to order your food now?" I replied "no I want to pay for 4 afternoons teas" He started looking at the screen again saying "I can't find anything on the screen for you". He went away to find someone who then went to another till to input our bill and I then paid, but the till roll had run out, so had to wait for my receipt.
Fabulous choice of starters - salmon ,pate, hunters pie, salads or soup- main course turkey, beef or ham - you can have all three if you want- great selection of veg - dauphinois potatoes were superb. Veg cooked to perfection - cabbage fresh and green - carrots in butter and cauliflower cheese- Yorkshire puds and roasties- something for everyone- including vegetarians. Another great selection of sweets from Eton mess, lemon posset , trifle and ice cream you can decorate to your choice.
Staff attentive but not pushy - I love the new decor and lay out of restaurant and lovely big bar to have a drink at before and after meal- large sports TVs but volume not loud - comfy settees to watch them from. Couldn’t fault the meal at all.
Best carvery in town. Bar none. Lovely selection of starters.... Soup if you like generous portions of main and fab selection of desserts ice cream etc. Too many of these and I'm gonna get chucked out of Slimming World lol!
Nice choices from the salad bar, to the carvery to the desserts. Vegetable soup was also included in price - although the pot of tea wasn’t. Unsure if sharing dessert (as listed on booking) was also included but neither of us needed it so didn’t order.
We entered at 1145. The one member of staff on duty did not know about our booking and asked us to choose a free table. Food and drink had to be ordered at the bar and there was a long queue for the one member of staff. At 12 noon, two other members of staff came and helped clear the queue, although not yet reaching us. At that moment, the chef came out of the kitchen, threw her hands in the air and shouted, "I can't do it". It was clear to us that the place was understaffed and that the staff were under pressure - not their fault. We considered that we were not likely to enjoy either good service or good food, so we left and went to the Holiday Inn instead.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Food was very, very nice and setting relaxing.
Lovely place, great food but a bit of a long wait between ordering and arrival of food.
I booked to attend the Sunday buffet. I was informed it finished at 3. It was a shame the website wasn't clear about this. I would like to be able to pay specifically in advance for this option ideally, this would make the experience smoother. I have not used the facilities enough to merit a review or recommendation really. I just wanted to say this
Had a 2for1 voucher which when we were seated I asked if we could use on 2 certain main courses was advised yes no problem just remind me at end. When finished food which wasn’t amazing we were was asked by someone clearing the table (different person to waiter) whether we wanted the remainder put into a doggy bag which we said yes please. We were then advised that we cannot give doggy bag for health and safety. Why offer this when you can’t even do it. We then asked the for bill and gave the original waiter the voucher for 2for1. A few minutes later the waiter came back to advise can’t do 2for1 on the meals that we had, even though we specified asked and checked at the start with the same waiter the specific meals that we wanted. We did end up getting the cheaper meal free but only after having to make a fuss, which obviously ruined the whole experience. Would not recommend to others based on the experience we received. Very poor service, below average food for prices charged. Advice for restaurant; if your going to give 2for1 vouchers to members and guests that say 2for1 on all main courses for the pub and restaurant it would be helpful if the menu divides the sections into a heading main courses, the menu just says burgers... ribs.... etc etc nothing under a specific heading and obviously better staff training!
We waited for several minutes for someone to appear at the front desk to seat us in the restaurant, eventually having to approach the bar to get assistance. After another couple of minutes of waiting by the bar, we were seated and told someone would come with menus and to take a drinks order. This took another 5 minutes. No-one seemed able to locate a child’s menu, so we ordered drinks to start. My daughter ordered a drink which unknown to us wasn’t on the child’s menu - had we had one of these, we would have ordered an included drink rather than one at additional cost.
After another 10 minutes we were given a child’s menu and eventually were able to order 10 minutes after that. Given that the restaurant was mostly empty at 6pm and there were lots of staff milling around this was very frustrating with a child hungry after a long swim.
The food itself arrived in good time and was of good quality but seemed rather overpriced. Unfortunately again we were let down by a long delay in anyone approaching us to be able to pay, my husband had to go looking around the restaurant for our waitress eventually.
Bit of a disappointment overall and unlikely to return despite being health club members and having enjoyed the food.
Excellant bar type snack with rugby being shown well worth a visit
Had a very tasty superfood salad and it was amazing. Staff friendly however service was slow at the bar when waiting to be served for drinks and to pay the bill. However this wouldn’t put me off returning again.
I would recommend due to the great atmosphere for the rugby and screens. However! Lots of staff around but poor service- server tried to sit us in a corner (we had pre booked) away from the screens. Very poor attention to customers. Food overpriced but ok.
Great place to watch the rugby internationals was a bit load but that was expected as wales win England.. food was service was great would definitely return and recommend
We have been to the village may times for lunches/dinner and have raved about it, However booked a table there for Valentine’s evening & was so disappointed. First off they never had our reservation even tho I had 2 emails comfiming this. Then we were asked for our order without being given the menus, my sons meal came out wrong which I pointed out to the waitress and was told she ‘would take the beans off the plate’ it was taken away & never brought back. We had all finished our meals & had to go & ask for my sons meal. Not one person came over to offer us any drinks, offer us a dessert menu or basically knowledge us!!! It was 5pm & we where the only table in the restaurant area so the place was not busy. Thought I would be nice to go out on valentines nite but how wrong was I. On leaving we Passed the manager whom asked it’s everything was alright...when I told her the above all she said was ‘aww sorry’
We will not be going there or recommending it anymore!
Far too expensive, standard pub food at extortionate prices
Table booked for 2 adults 2 children 5:45Online booking for the Sunday’s carvery or what I thought was. On arrival told the carvery had stopped at 4pm. Nothing online showing this, new menu provided and food ordered. 45 mins wait for food to my horror wrong food ordered. Waitress apologised abd accepted she ordered wrong thing. Our food finally arrived at 7:30 at which point two very restless kids were started to react.
Beef skewers were tough and flavourless and sweet potatoe fries were soggy.
VERY disappointed customer.
Booked carvery on Opentable for 5.30. Turned up on time but they stop carvery at 3 apparently.
Other food menu not great.
Good if you want to watch football, the tv's are huge.
Not very good staff and services in bar and restaurant
After being impressed visiting the village hotel cardiff for Boxing Day lunch in 2017, we decided to revisit. We were very disappointed with the menu. There was limited choice on the buffet, particularly with the veg (2 types of potato, carrots and sprouts) no Yorkshire puddings. Staff were friendly but since the refurbishment food quality seems to be poor and the ambience of the restaurant leaves much to be desired.
The area was very cold, not able to take coats off
Food was mediocre. Service was fair. Not a good experience. Would not recommend the village grill at all. Would not return there.
Couldn't eat starter as had gone overboard with the soy sauce and was inedible due to saltiness.
Out waiter matt I believe was great.... Far outshone the rest of the dribble that were the staff. Always all the girls were gathered in a huddle chatting when customers watched trying to catch attention.
Burger was served medium rare which I ate because I don't mind but I believe this was probably not the plan.
Chips described to go with burger were actually wedges so not described correctly.
I feel sorry for the poor waiter as he deserves to work in a better place and would be snapped up by a different restaurant. The girl with frizzy light blonde/auburn hair had a face like a slapped behind the whole time and looked like she'd rather be cleaning out horse stables than serving tables.
Utter shambles.... Dreadful service and food. Prices were shocking for the food served. Id say quality of harvester but almost twice the price. We had a £50 voucher for free and sincerely considered walking out after the starters and just leaving the voucher.
GO TO WHITCHIRCH OR SOMEWHERE TO EAT IF YOU STAY IN THIS HOTEL
Hugely disappointing. Shocking lunch menu - more like a MacDonalds than a hotel. Really poor furniture for a supposedly quality hotel. Inattentive bar staff. Badly overcooked (burnt) chicken served in an open weave wire basket with a napkin lining and a knife and fork! I challenge anyone to use a knife and fork in these circumstances! The miniature portion of dip turned out to be sufficient as I could only manage to eat half of the chicken! Being told I’d have to go to Starbucks if I wanted anything other than instant coffee really put the finishing touches to a memorable - for all the wrong reasons - lunch.
This was my first - and definitely my last - visit.
LIKED THE NEW LAYOUT BUT STILL PREFER THE SEPARATE DINING RESTAURANT. THE SERVICE WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ON OUR LAST VISIT AND OUR ROOM WAS CLEAN AND TIDY AND PEACEFUL. WOULD DEFINITELY VISIT AGAIN.
We have eaten at the hotel a few times recently (evening meals) and the food and service were great so I booked for my mum's birthday lunch. Unfortunately I didn't check the menu in advance and we were really disappointed that it was 'sports bar food' only.
However, the food was freshly cooked and delicious.
My only complaint relates to the cost of wine on the day. £8.50 for a large glass; I thought this was very over-priced and I would not order wine again at the bar.
Me and my partner wanted the two course and glass of prosecco for £29 we booked a table online got there for afternoon time, we didn't know the offer starts at 5pm so we waited until then, weren't disappointed was really nice.
Excellent value meal ,part of overnight package , staff very attentive although very busy. Only downside of meal event was , bar area is situated in amongst dining area,so it was very noisy ,with group of three men "drinking" at the bar ,with occasional bad language and loud conversation.
We have always eaten at the Village as we are Gym Members since the Gym opened - that must be bout 17 years ! Last night was a get together of ex pupils from Friars Grammar School (Bangor) who live in Cardiff and the surrounding area. Myself and my wife are regular in the Gym and often come for Sunday lunch. Thanks for last night - great food.
Bar meal tasty but with drinks was quite expensive for what we had. Service excellent & staff very friendly & accommodating
My partner and I have been coming to the village hotel Cardiff for Sunday lunch for sometime, we are soo pleased that the standards have never failed us. Perfect meals and plenty of food everytime.
