Vintage Inn The Black Horse
A little Pub history
The original building was an inn that refreshed and accommodated pilgrims to the chapel dedicated to St. Thomas in 1221 travelling through Pilgrims Hatch. The Black Horse was built in around the 16th century as a small hall house, with a cross wing at the northern end, and a southern wing being added in the 17th century.
Our charming black and white timbered 16th century inn is a favourite with visitors to nearby Weald Country Park - some 500 acres with lakes and tree-lined avenues created by landscapers in the 18th century.
Lovely roast dinner xx
Great pub, nice food and good service. The only negative point is that we booked via Open Table and when we got there they couldn’t find our booking. They managed to squeeze us in though even though they were very busy. It would make me think twice about booking via Open Table again though.
They didn’t have our reservation logged?
It was so busy for a Wednesday night but this didn’t hinder service at all, would defiantly go back.
Meal was ok - ordered pork belly which came up 80% fat. Complained to waitress who went to see Chief who apparently said all the pork was the same
Then spoke with Manager who looked at the pork and tried to find where the meat was - he eventually agreed to replace with beef but not particularly gracious
Whenever I visit The Black Horse it is always a very enjoyable experience.
The decor is pleasant and the staff are very welcoming and friendly.
There is always something yummy on the menu to pick from !
In fact my friend and I said whilst eating our dinner that in all the times we've eaten here there's never been anything to complain about. 👍
The team there deserve a well earned pat on the back.
Enjoyed Sunday roast. But the venue is very tired looking. But fortunately we could see they r in process of revamp - I think. That wld be added bonus.
Very good service excellent food cooked well and served hot. Will eat here again. Well worth the drive out.
Was okey for a drink and general get together nice pub but afraid I’d only go so far as to say it was a pub and very typical of a brewery run establishment, sold out on a lot of food so had very limited choice of menu.
Table was ready upon arrival, had two courses. Opted to have the additional scallops with the pork belly, scallops were gritty. No proper crackling on pork belly, but otherwise ok. Had a Doombar which i always like, but think it was getting towards the bottom of the barrel as it tasted less smooth and more flat and a vinegar aftertaste? OK overall but nothing to get excited about.
I have eaten at the Black Horse several times as a very last resort as each time has been a very big disappointment. I and my husband were first told several options on the menu was not available we chose as a starter prawn and lobster cocktail which consisted of a few lettuce leaves half a dozen frozen poor quality prawns and not sure if any lobster. Very poor quality and not good value for money. Will not be going back.
We went there for a sunday roast with family. The place is pretty cool with a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Service was ok, food very good and price right.
Overall happy of our exeperience at The Black Horse, we’ll definitely come back.
Love this place, just disappointed that most of the veggie options on the menu were not actually available which is not great when you are a veggie.
Our table was booked for 4.30pm- we did not get seated until after 5pm after 2 visits to the bar to ask what was happening. The (red haired) girl behind the bar seemed distracted, vague and not really up to speed with the bookings. She was then sorting out a problem with a waitress regarding a bill that had been given to and paid for by the wrong person.
We were finally seen to by a young man behind the bar who went out of his way to sort us out a table which he then showed us to after apologizing for the delay and mix up.
Enjoyable early dinner at 5.30 with friend. Good & varied menu choices, although 3 items unavailable. Recommend a family area and adults area as noisy children running around.
Plenty of space between tables, everywhere in restaurant clean although the toilets were messy. Table night light candles created nice atmosphere. Food good, prompt service and helpful waitress. Recommend coconut sorbet, delicious.
Reasonably priced everyday food with friendly staff
Enjoyable, friendly environment, pleasant waitress. Good food.
Loved the atmosphere and service was excellent and we all enjoyed our food thank you
Our experience was good. Waitress was prompt attentive and friendly which made for an enjoyable mea
We have used this venue to meet friends for lunch in more than one occasion. Food and service excellent and great value
Staff very accommodating, beautiful garden.
arrived earlier than booked...no problem were fitted in. staff excellent and had a very good meal.
Took some Australian visitors out to lunch . They had been before years ago and had find memories
Service and fo9d excellent
Have to remember to order a small portion
Thanks fora great meal
This was my second visit to The Black Horse and once again I was very impressed! The portions are huge and so tasty. I went for the chicken pie and I would say it's the best I've had. The staff are friendly and far more attentive than most pubs/restaurants.
The outside area is big and spacious with plenty of seating (they also have 2 goats and turkeys living next door!).
Really great dinner, we will definitely be returning.
Unfortunately the food was what I would class as conveyor belt quality and very disappointing. The staff and general service was very good. I shan't be returning.
Had a lovely Valentines night here, wonderful food, lovely staff - couldn't do enough for us, lovely menu and it was a Valentine special, but excellent value. Nice to know their are still restaurants that aren't interested in ripping their customers off with overrated and overpriced food who don't care about customer service. The staff here can't do enough for you and the food is very good.
Keep up the good work x
Had the fish which was poor. The duck platter was ok. Looked as if everyone dining was in same area on the right sided rear of the restaurant furthest away from the open fire. I wont be going back before the end of Jan with my 20% reduction.
Arrived and open table didn't send our reservation to the black horse, they had no acknowledge of us. They kindly still let us have our table. Been going for 20 years since a child, really do love it here very homely.
Not up to previous standards since the sirloin steak was very poor
