What Insiders Are Saying
Want low-key cool in Highbury? Westerns Laundry is a modern wine bar & restaurant in a converted garage that does brilliant small plates.
Would have been the full five stars if not for the very disappointing and overpriced wine list. For once I find myself in agreement with the critics. We worked our way through a few glasses and none matched fairly standard 'non-natural' wines for the same money. No, make that half the money. What a shame, because the food was fabulous, the atmosphere buzzing without being overpowering, and the service knowledgeable and friendly. But being stung for paying in effect £50+ a bottle for six glasses of really rather nasty wine took the gloss off the whole evening.
Service was slow had to wait 20min between courses no menu card was only written on a board which was to far away and not very eligable reading! good local sourced ingredients but some of the courses were average the rabbit was very poor no taste sauce very watery. the lagostine fideo was delious best course on the menu. Friendly staff the ambience was good. Very limited cocktail choice good if you are wine drinker.
Second visit and love this restaurant. Had 3 small plates and a dessert and each dish was magnificent. It's very rare to eat out and love every dish. Cooking of the highest order
Very cosy and atmospheric venue. Was perfect for a date with my husband. A little bit pricey, but totally worth it as the food was absolutely divine. Extensive menue and suitable for vegetarians and meat lovers. Quite casual and laid back, very lively and fun. I would definitely recommend it to my friends.
Another delicious meal at our favourite restaurant. The range of choice is always fantastic and the staff are really helpful and friendly. So unlike many London eateries.
Thank you Westerns Laundy
Delicious food and wine + friendly service. A great asset to the neighbourhood. The fideua is a must....
Very good atmosphere and great service. Food is good but wine list minimal and expensive. Overall really good evening. I strongly recommend.
Sadly, WL was disappointing from start to finish. The wine list was probably the worst I've ever come across and the mark up was astronomical. The waiters all spoke very highly of the selection, but after trying 5 different glasses, we gave up. The food was under-seasoned, small and overpriced. I'm quite surprised by all the hype for this place. Very loud too, although the lighting/ambiance was quite lovely.
The Wine list is incredible, not had a bad one in there yet. The food is also amazing. The plates are all perfect for sharing, the bigger ones have a few more ingredients going on and are slightly larger. again i've not really had a bad one on my many visits. I would certainly recommend you go. The only critique would be that it's easy to not leave and spend a lot of money on everything the menu has to offer. Which goes to show how good this place is.
Great food, nicely presented, some dishes were extravagant and heavenly (the crab) and some were quite plain albeit with superiour meats and vegetables (the lamb). A great fizzy Loire valley wine. Hard place to find because there is no sign outside. Beware, it is noisy.
Lovely restaurant - perfect for a special occasion without having to spend loads. The service was excellent too. I have a shellfish allergy and they did everything to assure me there was no risk! Even talked me through the menu to let me know which items they could adapt for me. The atmosphere in here is great, and the food is lovely. Superb evening, thank you!
I really liked this place, the food was very carefully prepared and delicious. I think you need to choose carefully as the food is quite rich and is not the kind of place you go to eat lots of vegetables and salad!
I liked the shared tables (nice if your neighbours are friendly!)
Great service, food and atmosphere. We went for an anniversary lunch and felt so welcomed and relaxed. Food and wine superb.
Lovely setting with big windows, a great place to sit. Satisfying, interesting small-plates menu, all well carried-off.
Lovely food, great ambience, shared our tables with 3 other couples so intimate and cosy but great atmosphere and a good night out.
Service was fitful and in the end a bit slow given that the restaurant applies a two-hour turn-round on the tables. This left too little time to enjoy an excellent dessert and coffee.
The food was all delicious apart from pork belly, which was sseriously under-cooked resulting in huge areas of fat. Inadequate lighting mad this hard to spot and reject.
Consistently brilliant. You just want to keep coming back as the menu changes and there are new things to try!
Fantastic stuff, probably the best I've had all year. Beautiful seafood sourced directly from Cornwall, impeccably cooked. Also, if you're a fan of low intervention wines then the wine list is to die for.
I was delighted to hear that this restaurant had opened in Drayton Park and excited to give it a try. Aesthetically it’s on the money, with an open kitchen, exposed brickwork and huge crittal windows and the service is friendly and attentive. However, the wine list is outrageously expensive, with a “challenging” selection of producers and to be honest I want delicious wine to drink with my food rather than wondering why I’m drinking a Fiano at £70 a bottle when I could honestly buy something infinitely more palatable for under a tenner at Sainsbury’s. The food is good, almost really good, but when your dining experience is marred by the ludicrously expensive wine, that doesn’t even taste great, it leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Overall pretty disappointing - interestingly a lot of diners ended up the cocktail bar up the road. I wonder why?
Great food but incredibly pricey for small plates and one of the most expensive wine lists I've seen. Very intimate seating but good ambience. Thought it was very strange that the venue let someone bring their dog in (plus dog bed) who barked repeatedly during our meal. Very boujee
The quality and flavour of the food was exceptional and the service was faultless. However the portions are tiny for the price you pay. We came away feeling like we could still go for another meal. At just over £100 for two, I expected a little more.
Loved every bite! Wine was lovely also. Will definitely be back soon! Thanks for the warm friendly service!
We sat at the bar and had an absolutely amazing experience- with incredible service. We ordered 5 dishes to share between the two of us and left so satisfied. Everything we tried was delicious and fresh- would definitely come back for more!
Amazing food. Wine was a lot better than reviews lead us to believe. Service was a little erratic but very friendly. Didn’t need the music as it made it difficult to hear. Not sure about shared tables as a little cramped.
Fresh high quality food, imaginatively presented in a very pleasant and informal environment. Most people sit at communal tables although there a few individual ones. Service made us feel really welcome.
A lovely space that serves excellent small plates of food with exceptionally efficient and friendly service
Great food, interesting wines, wonderful service.
Great food and wine, good service just a little bit loud when busy due to acoustics of the space. Would highly recommend.
We love this place. The food is awesome, service is great ... my only gripe is that whilst the food is very keenly priced, the wine list is too expensive.
It's marvellous to have Westerns as a local restaurant. Great inventive food. I prefer it at lunchtime as evenings can get a bit noisy and hectic
Lovely selection of crafted sea food plates and extensive wine list.
The service and atmosphere is good. Also the concept of lots of small portions and sharing with friends is excellent. Also the food was very good.
BUT the price just cannot be justified for what is, after all, snacky type food. For two with 50cl of wine and no dessert, including tip was just over £100. We didn't exactly over eat either.
Excellent food, energy, friendly, different, have been many times and never a bad meal or an occasion not to remember!
Great restaurant with fantastic food and an excellent selection of wines. Love the semi-suburban setting too!
Food was ok, trying a little too hard and not hitting the right points at times. Probably a little too much for the quality of food.
Service was good and it is a nice place, however I came away wanting a proper meal. The portions were ridiculously tiny, some tasty and some not. Some just thrown together, the anchovies and tomato on toast sounded great but the toast was burnt with a sad looking fish draped over it. Woke up hungry and disappointed the next morning, will not return.
Daily changing menu (posted on instagram that day) which is seafood focused, but plenty of vegetarian and meat dishes too. Great ambiance and beautiful courtyard. Great for a summer evening.
There’s no doubting the skill in the kitchen. But too much of our food was served with excesses of greasy (if tasty) sauces/dressings that dampened our enjoyment of the whole meal.
The space and courtyard garden are fantastic, though internally the acoustics do not favour quiet conversation. You may need your ear plugs.
I am fine enough with the faddy natural wine list, but the value of the wines is poor. Though on a plus note all wines are available by the glass.
So this showed tantalising glimpses of greatness but it was sadly a rather flawed experience for us.
First time dining here - the tapas-type menu is original and very tasty, lots of choice, well-priced. Loved all the food, esp the butter beans and really good Iberico salami. Deserts - a kind of apricot trifle and a brown bread ice cream - were delicious. Having read that the wines are over-priced, I disagree because the quality is so good (and the cheapest wine was £4.50 a glass). The service was really good - informative and friendly - and we weren’t rushed out at the end. A really interesting venue.
This place continues to be seriously good!
