This is a lovely place to relax with good food and wine. The pricing is sensible for the quality of the meal. The Wheatsheaf makes the most of their peaceful location to offer a great experience with decent food.
Fantastic food ... fantastic service ... such a welcoming atmosphere would definitely recommend ... the best Cullen skink and mussels to start with home safe bread ... for mains we went with Thai green curry and chilli beef served in a tortilla basket honestly will definitely be back ... a little gem also got to hear live acoustic music from summerland
Christmas dinner, what a treat five courses well presented and cooked perfectly an absolute delight. The owner understands what makes customers happy and long make it last. Well done!!
Cosy, informal surroundings near the open fire in lounge bar. Promptly and unobtrusively served, a relaxing solo meal.
We have already recommended it to friends that will be visiting his week. Our first visit and will definitely return. Had a lovely lunch, excellent value for the quality of food we enjoyed and out 3 dogs were accepted with no fuss.
Food was only just warm. Room was cold. Quite disappointed.
Friday lunchtime was quiet which was ok for us as we were catching up with friends.service was very good. Good choice of food for a lunchtime. The reaction to the food was mixed. We thought it was good value. We were in the area on holiday but would definitely return if here again.
Friendly welcoming service. Lovely food in generous portions. Set lunch excellent vale and quality.
Made most welcome looked after impeccably. The meal and service was excellent. Would thoroughly recommend.
Welcome and service set a very high standard for a lunch which was just as we wished. A good choice of dishes ours well prepared and presented.
Lovely Sunday lunch.
Excellent service, great value lunchtime fixed price menu
The Wheatsheaf has a lovely, welcoming ambience, aided by cheerful staff. The dining room is very attractive, with ample space between the tables. The service was excellent - attentive, but not overly so. The one small disappointment was the steak chosen by one of the group, which should have been medium-rare, but was a little too rare. Admittedly we didn't raise this with our server at the time - our mistake - but the evening was still most enjoyable, and a future visit is a definite.
The food was very good. Only issue we had the coffee was tepid but I’m told they had been having a problem with the coffee machine.
We all had roasts--I had the Rump of Lamb and so got a small portion of mashed potatoes in their skins-a bit unusual but OK--the other two had roast beef and got just one roast potato--not enough for an adult dinner, the green vegetables were OK. The meat, in all cases, was beautifully cooked BUT if you drape hot meat over the one roast potato it is soggy when it should be crisp! We all had Rhubarb with a VERY small dish of custard on the side--quite nice but not worth £7.25! Overall it is a nice restaurant but it IS expensive--a perfectly nice bottle of Spanish wine that I estimated would be about £7.00 in the supermarket was £24.00--so although we enjoyed our meal we would think twice about going there again. It really wasn't busy for an Easter Sunday--so maybe they should re-think their business and make some changes.
Had lunch on a Monday so it was quite quiet but a very nice room comfortably set out. Service was very attentive without being over the top. There is a set lunch menu with 4 choices of each course which is very good value. The food was plentiful, well presented and very tasty. Will definitely be back.
Excellent Sunday lunch (good scallops, excellent roast beef and super rich creme brulee) wash down with great house wine and deuchars IPA. Given the quality of the food and first rate service the price was great value for money.
Staff very friendly but the food was not great at all and very expensive
This was a second visit to the Wheatsheaf. We hardly dared hope for a meal as good as last time, but we were delighted with the whole experience. The service and the setting were both excellent and the food was beautifully prepared and presented. The value for money was exceptional for the quality of the experience.
Our lunch was a delight: beautifully presented and quite splendid food- cooked and seasoned to perfection.
We had a really lovely time at The Wheatsheaf Inn. The food and the service were excellent and the atmosphere in the bar and restaurant was really nice. We would definitely go back.
Lovely place, friendly staff and a great menu. We will be back.
A very pleasant evening meal. We had the coconut curry - really tasty, and the game pie - fine but not so special. Couldn't work out what meat was what, although I guess that's what to expect. Service was good and ambience was very nice - traditional country restaurant
We really enjoyed our evening here. Friendly, warm welcome, delicious food and relaxed atmosphere.
Fabulous food and Service and the set menu was amazing value at £17.00 for 2 courses. Quality cooking that is better than some so called fine dining establishments. Well worth a visit and will definitely be back. Thanks Wheatsheaf for a memorable lunch.
Generally disappointed with the food and drink. Two of us had wine by the glass and neither took a second glass of the same wine. Was it just a bad day for wine? Well the Bio drinking calendar says don't for that date but I only carry that as a jokey conversation piece. Maybe there's something in it after all?
The food was a bit ordinary. Our starters were probably better than our mains. Two of us had scallops which were fair enough but came on cold plates - now scallops cool rapidly without a little assistance to stay warm. I selected burger as my main, which I do when nothing else appeals. I might have been better with the haddock and chips of course. The food was generously proportioned but cupped handful of potato wedges soon palls and the burger was OK but a bitty dry.
All told not worth the half hour drive from Kelso. Sad really as I thought the staff, excepting the kitchen, were doing really well and I'd heard good things from friends about the place. Maybe just an off day - I hope so.
We were a little late but there was no murmur of annoyance. Again. Staff were happy when two of us only needed starters. Third person said her wine was delicious, but found ten pounds for a glass a little expensive. Food was delicious.
Lovely dinner served by delightful young lady who looked after us well. Portions are very generous so go with a good appetite! Would certainly not hesitate in recommending.
We were visiting locally and found this fantastic inn for our wedding anniversary evening meal. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. We had 3courses and all were superb, we wished we had discovered this place earlier in our stay as we would have loved a return visit. Not overpriced for the quality of the food
Good food in pleasant surroundings. Service attentive but not intrusive. Suitable for couples or small parties. Recommended
Husband and I visited on Saturday night and had a lovely meal, well worth the drive.
Very friendly, informal hotel/restaurant with excellent t service. Love it here! Enjoyed dinner with family on Saturday night and the food was absolutely wonderful. Two of our party had the scallops starter which was stunning, resembling a beach scene - so so imaginative by the chef. Well done! I started with brocolli, courgettes and blue cheese soup followed by cod - both so so tasty. Lovely red wine enjoyed by those having the steak pie, and finishing with coffee and tablet. The perfect dinner, thank you so much. I would highly recommend The Wheatsheaf for a really delicious dinner in relaxed, comfortable surroundings.
We returned to the Wheatsheaf after an absence of six years, only because we hadn't been in The Borders, and found it as good as ever. The food is excellent and the service is attentive and discrete. We're now planning a return to The Borders before too long.
Friendly welcome, polite well presented staff. Great menu and excellent food never fails to deliver a lovely night out.
Very enjoyable, friendly staff would recommend for lunch or an overnight stay
Very pleasant sunny dining room overlooking the village green. Welcome and service very good, prompt and friendly. Food looked very attractive but there was too much of it. Couldn't finish it. We had the blue cheese panna cotta to start with which looked very nice but was a bit heavy and much too filling for a starter. The main of guinea fowl was delicious but again too much going on. The crab beignets were a bit dry and heavy and the chorizo in the paella a bit unnecessary. Couldn't manage a desert.
Never disappoints. Highly recommended.
Very welcoming and friendly. Lovely menu. Our first visit and will go again. Food exceptional and very reasonably priced. was given a small box of chocolates when we were leaving as it was a birthday celebration.....nice touch.
We doubt if the roast beef was in fact roasted - had all the hallmarks of two thick (far too thick) slices taken from an average quality joint and microwaved! Vegetables tough and unappetising. Plates too full and rather off putting.
Very good food in a very welcoming atmosphere. Lovely evening out
