The menus reflect the very best of seasonally available local produce and bring about a fusion of modern and traditional culinary styles.
In winter, chase away the gloom with choices such as venison, pheasant, and duck in rich casseroles and glossy jus. As the evenings lighten so does our menu, our chef's creative flair produces a true celebration of summer.
Had lunch on a Monday so it was quite quiet but a very nice room comfortably set out. Service was very attentive without being over the top. There is a set lunch menu with 4 choices of each course which is very good value. The food was plentiful, well presented and very tasty. Will definitely be back.
Excellent Sunday lunch (good scallops, excellent roast beef and super rich creme brulee) wash down with great house wine and deuchars IPA. Given the quality of the food and first rate service the price was great value for money.
Staff very friendly but the food was not great at all and very expensive
This was a second visit to the Wheatsheaf. We hardly dared hope for a meal as good as last time, but we were delighted with the whole experience. The service and the setting were both excellent and the food was beautifully prepared and presented. The value for money was exceptional for the quality of the experience.
Our lunch was a delight: beautifully presented and quite splendid food- cooked and seasoned to perfection.
We had a really lovely time at The Wheatsheaf Inn. The food and the service were excellent and the atmosphere in the bar and restaurant was really nice. We would definitely go back.
Lovely place, friendly staff and a great menu. We will be back.
A very pleasant evening meal. We had the coconut curry - really tasty, and the game pie - fine but not so special. Couldn't work out what meat was what, although I guess that's what to expect. Service was good and ambience was very nice - traditional country restaurant
We really enjoyed our evening here. Friendly, warm welcome, delicious food and relaxed atmosphere.
Fabulous food and Service and the set menu was amazing value at £17.00 for 2 courses. Quality cooking that is better than some so called fine dining establishments. Well worth a visit and will definitely be back. Thanks Wheatsheaf for a memorable lunch.
Generally disappointed with the food and drink. Two of us had wine by the glass and neither took a second glass of the same wine. Was it just a bad day for wine? Well the Bio drinking calendar says don't for that date but I only carry that as a jokey conversation piece. Maybe there's something in it after all?
The food was a bit ordinary. Our starters were probably better than our mains. Two of us had scallops which were fair enough but came on cold plates - now scallops cool rapidly without a little assistance to stay warm. I selected burger as my main, which I do when nothing else appeals. I might have been better with the haddock and chips of course. The food was generously proportioned but cupped handful of potato wedges soon palls and the burger was OK but a bitty dry.
All told not worth the half hour drive from Kelso. Sad really as I thought the staff, excepting the kitchen, were doing really well and I'd heard good things from friends about the place. Maybe just an off day - I hope so.
We were a little late but there was no murmur of annoyance. Again. Staff were happy when two of us only needed starters. Third person said her wine was delicious, but found ten pounds for a glass a little expensive. Food was delicious.
Lovely dinner served by delightful young lady who looked after us well. Portions are very generous so go with a good appetite! Would certainly not hesitate in recommending.
We were visiting locally and found this fantastic inn for our wedding anniversary evening meal. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. We had 3courses and all were superb, we wished we had discovered this place earlier in our stay as we would have loved a return visit. Not overpriced for the quality of the food
Good food in pleasant surroundings. Service attentive but not intrusive. Suitable for couples or small parties. Recommended
Husband and I visited on Saturday night and had a lovely meal, well worth the drive.
Very friendly, informal hotel/restaurant with excellent t service. Love it here! Enjoyed dinner with family on Saturday night and the food was absolutely wonderful. Two of our party had the scallops starter which was stunning, resembling a beach scene - so so imaginative by the chef. Well done! I started with brocolli, courgettes and blue cheese soup followed by cod - both so so tasty. Lovely red wine enjoyed by those having the steak pie, and finishing with coffee and tablet. The perfect dinner, thank you so much. I would highly recommend The Wheatsheaf for a really delicious dinner in relaxed, comfortable surroundings.
We returned to the Wheatsheaf after an absence of six years, only because we hadn't been in The Borders, and found it as good as ever. The food is excellent and the service is attentive and discrete. We're now planning a return to The Borders before too long.
Friendly welcome, polite well presented staff. Great menu and excellent food never fails to deliver a lovely night out.
Very enjoyable, friendly staff would recommend for lunch or an overnight stay
Very pleasant sunny dining room overlooking the village green. Welcome and service very good, prompt and friendly. Food looked very attractive but there was too much of it. Couldn't finish it. We had the blue cheese panna cotta to start with which looked very nice but was a bit heavy and much too filling for a starter. The main of guinea fowl was delicious but again too much going on. The crab beignets were a bit dry and heavy and the chorizo in the paella a bit unnecessary. Couldn't manage a desert.
Never disappoints. Highly recommended.
Very welcoming and friendly. Lovely menu. Our first visit and will go again. Food exceptional and very reasonably priced. was given a small box of chocolates when we were leaving as it was a birthday celebration.....nice touch.
We doubt if the roast beef was in fact roasted - had all the hallmarks of two thick (far too thick) slices taken from an average quality joint and microwaved! Vegetables tough and unappetising. Plates too full and rather off putting.
Very good food in a very welcoming atmosphere. Lovely evening out
What a fantastic find. Wonderful location, bar and restaurant and top notch service.
The food is excellent as are the selections of gins, whiskys and wines.
Fabulous menu lots of choice staff very helpful and accommodated gluten free options.
We were visiting Kelso for the weekend and had had this place recommended to us by the owner of the cottage we rented. It didn't disappoint. Lovely food, friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. Would definitely recommend the trip out to Swinton to enjoy a meal here.
In the area for a family wedding and needed a Friday evening meal with our daughter and her partner. Recommended by others in wedding party and the Wheatsheaf did not disappoint. Too far away for regular visits, but if ever in the area again we would not hesitate to eat here again.
Good choice of food, very nicely prepared and presented. Good value for money too.
Had lunch starters were really good , lamb that my partner had looked nice but Eyemouth haddock not great. Came in an oval bowl with chips on the bottom and fish lying on top , made the chips a bit greasy also very bland no taste. Apart from that a tad expensive for what your getting. That's the only reason I wouldn't recommend to friends. Although the owners were nice and good service.
Dining with son and family who holiday in the area regularly and I had heard about this restaurant and decided to try it out, it did not let us down
It was some years since we last visited The Wheatsheaf and the standard appears to have dropped. My main course of fresh tuna was very salty as though the fish had been brined, though our waiter apparently asked the chef if that was so and told me that it hadn't. Our two glasses of white wine tasted very weak and watery. We were the only guests for lunch, although a wedding party arrived just as we were leaving. A rather disappointing meal.
Very nice food, friendly staff and atmosphere. Will definitely be back soon!
We visited on Saturday for the first time & thought it was great we will be back soon as we stay at berwick upon tweed just hope menu changes from time 2 time
We had a lovely meal as always & it's so handy for us as we live in the village.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and it was excellent value for money on the Itison dinner, bed and breakfast voucher.
Excellent food, great service. Having OpenTable booking is simple. We will be back.
The lunch menu was sufficiently varied to meet all tastes but simple enough to ensure that the locally sourced food was freshly cooked.A simple menu beautifully cooked and presented. The service was attentive and charming without being intrusive.
We will certainly return for an evening meal very soon.
This was our second visit after being very impressed with the quality of the food on our first visit. We have been to numerous restaurants in the area and have been largely unimpressed and found most to be fairly mediocre. One of our guests said his fish meal, which was the Sea Bream was the best he had ever had! Everyone commented on the excellent food and how well it had been cooked. We will definitely be going again. Several times I suspect. Well done on a fine job! Keep it up.
Had a lovely weekday lunch - interesting menu, using locally sourced ingredients and an impressive range of vegetarian dishes. Excellent selection of wines by the glass or bottle and hubbie really enjoyed a bottle of Belhaven Twisted Thistle to accompany his pork & chorizo burger.
