Delicious seafood and wine and excellent service. A great evening at this cozy restaurant.
Lovely atmosphere with delicious tapas style seafood dishes which were reasonably priced for portion size. Desserts and drinks selection were also very good. Would definitely revisit
Amazing food. Really excellent service
Azazing quality of seafood! Great service. A very special place. We've booked for Xmas
Wonderful dining experience. Not cheap but worth every penny if you enjoy good seafood and good wines. Will go back for a special occasion . Highly recommended
Love this restaurant - great atmosphere and food as well as fab staff.
Beautiful seafood, not mucked about with too much. Loved everything. Tiniest glitch of one dish which didn’t turn up but this is a very, very good restaurant.
Lovely food. Felt like a really special meal out. A real treat with delicious interesting dishes and very fresh seafood. Also a nice surprise when the bill came. Highly recommend and will eat there again as soon as I'm back in Edinburgh
Not cheap but excellent ingredients and quality menu.
Food, service, wine was all fantastic... was very quiet but it was a Thursday night... would definitely return!!
Great food and great service. We would recommend the buck a shuck oysters and the char grilled octopus was excellent
Very friendly service, amazing food and creative cocktails. would certainly recommend. we had a wonderful evening. thank you
The whole meal was amazing! Recommend the scallops.
Excellent food, wine and service. Very lively on a Saturday night, but we will repeat.
Enjoyed a wonderful Friday lunch, could have eaten the whole menu.
Food was amazing-the best meal I’ve had out for ages. We spent a lot though. If you have a large appetite, be prepared to spend a lot! We were seated beside a group so our table was quite noisy, but on the plus side, it was beside a radiator. I highly recommend it.
Food was delicious. We were even provided with complimentary glass of champagne for our anniversary . Definitely would recommend. Oysters are a must eat here 😍
An unforgettable food experience we felt every dish was the best from the selection we had. Great wine and deserts too. Staff were super friendly and service efficient. We had guests from England and they are already planning a trip back to eat here .
Absolutely amazing! Lobster tempura to die for. Service really good and funky design.
Excellent and friendly service. Small plates were all quite expensive and can quickly add up. Octopus was excellent as was the tempura oysters. Njuda was quite overpowering and salty, also was on a couple of the dishes. Seaweed salad was interesting idea, the asian dressing was tasty but seaweed itself was so chewy it was pretty much inedible. Service was great though. I would like to return.
Absolutely exquisite food. Delightful presentation and taste. We had the oysters natural which were salty and tasty. We then had the lobster tempura which was simply one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten. Smoked mackerel done in house was delicious. The finale was monkfish Satays with peanut sauce. Utterly tender and delicate in flavour this was an exceptional interpretation of an Asian classic. We couldn’t rave enough and we delighted in chatting to the chef about the food.
A gem in Edinburgh!,
Great place, very nice decoration minimal but cosy. Very good tastes and a lot of option in small plates (tapas like). Personnel was awesome. Definitely recommend.
The food was variable; some excellent dishes, some poor ones. I had to send one dish back as it was lukewarm. The quality of the wine was poor and was overpriced. Strange music, very 70s, lots of Boney M. Nice welcome when we arrived, service after that was fine, not fabulous. Restaurant quite dark, poor lighting on our side of the room.
The white horse was recommended by friends.. it did not disappoint, and the tempura oysters, tuna , octopus and lobster and crab toast were delicious.. we went at lunchtime and it was very quiet.. it deserves to be busier.. but the evenings are much busier and a reservation is advisable.. we shall definitely be back
The ambiance was nice and the food was very tasty. However the booth they gave us was too small for 6 people, and the portions too small for the prices. The service however was so bad it was surreal. Our waitress was friendly, however she didn't note down our orders so every time we wanted to order something, we had to put in a lot of effort to ensure that she memorises it all and keep reminding her since she forgot a couple of items every time. It felt like we were unwilling participants in her memory training program. One guy collecting the empties knocked my wine glass and spilled half of it on my phone and wallet, cracking my water glass in the process. He said a quick sorry and dissappeared without any attempt to remedy the situation, leaving me to scramble to dry my phone and wallet before anything got ruined. I'm not usually one to get very hung up on service but writing down orders so that you don't forget them or checking whether everything is intact if you knock something over should just be common sense...
Fantastic seafood restaurant. Enjoyed all of the small plates and starter. Recommend sampling the menu.
The service was top notch and very friendly. The menu choices were amazing so difficult to choose! We had oysters followed by razor clams, scallops, sesame tuna and grilled octopus accompanied by broccoli I with garlic and chili pepper and the most delicious seafood salad—highly recommend it. We chose a bottle of wine and our server insisted we have a taste before finalizing our selection to ensure we are satisfied. A most enjoyable evening.
Great service! Staff know all the dishes, and can help with wine choices. All the dishes are well presented, and a perfect plate full. Star dishes are the oysters, octopus and the monkfish satay. It’s a must.
Outstanding and innovative food. Perfect portion size. Great if you are exploring the Old Town. Highly recommended
Raves: Oysters were excellent (happy hour 4-6pm is highly recommended to save money), skinny fries were great, lobster salad was tasty. Staff was vary friendly. Music was very tastefully done: upbeat, fun, and a broad mix of great contemporary and classic songs, but not too loud.
Commentary: A little on the pricey side, since most dishes were appetizer/tapas style. Would've liked to see a broader selection of craft beer.
FWIW: Overall, this place was good enough to attract my wife and I back for a second visit during our weeklong stay in 2019.
The food was unique and the service was stellar
Thoroughly enjoyed another evening.
Gréât staff, food and atmosphere!
I was incredibly happy with my choice. I wanted seafood and found the perfect place that served small plates so I tried several things. The Monkfish Satay was amazing along with a deliciously fresh Scotch Bonnet Cured Salmon and the char on the Octopus was delightful!! Ok now, the oysters...so clean and tasty...recommend trying all 4. Natural was amazing as was the horseradish with the green herb. I'm under the impression you cannot order wrong here. Bon appetit!! P.s. very nice staff!!
Seriously good! we will be going again. Staff friendly and helpful, atmosphere great. If you like seafood this place is a must
Delicious food and and buzzy atmosphere, let down by slightly underwhelming service. The waiter didn't know the wine list. I don't like to be told, when requesting that the oysters I ordered be brought out first, that "we just bring all the dishes out when they're ready ". Could do better!
The service was absolutely amazing, we were taken care of as soon as we walked in right up until they gave us our coats back and said goodnight. The food was outstanding and will definitely be back.
It was so good that we came back the last night, 4 days agter the 1st visit. We then tecommended you to a party of 4 Americans who came to you ladt night. They reported back to me today and were sooo pleased😅.
My wife will go on Tripadvisor tonight.
We loved all the different plates we had.
The White Horse Oyster Bar is, in short, superb! The food, staff, music playlist (everything) were on point. If you’ve not already been and you love seafood, put this at the top of your places to go ... and definitely try the octopus!
Fantastic seafood! Easily recommendable and a must visit next time
Booked table for our wedding anniversary. Arrived and were seated very quickly and at a good sized round table. The food arrived and the quality was very good with a few surprises. All the dishes we chose were very tasty. My only complaint was the odd oyster tasted muddy.
