WOOD – Manchester is somewhere you can enjoy a stylish yet relaxed dining experience.
We aim to offer modern interpretations on traditional flavours focusing on simplicity & purity.
Seasonal inspiration can be found throughout our menu.
Following an early evening concert we picked Wood for an evening meal based on reviews online, we’d never been before. I’ve got to say the overall experience was superb. The ambience is good, the staff friendly & attentive and the food ... as good as it gets.
A three course meal is not cheap but this really is fine dining, the standard of the food, the preparation and the way it is presented are all excellent and overall it represents good value. I hope we can come back soon.
We plumped for the Lunch/Theatre Menu because, as is usually the case, we had no idea what the tasting menu would comprise. We were not disappointed and the food was very good. We will go back. We did manage to catch a glimpse of one course of the tasting menu being taken to another table and size-wise, it looked better than some other places. We'd probably go for that the next time. No sign of Simon, however - presumably, he's in his sumptuous hideaway in the Bahamas counting his money and why not!
Three of us went to Wood after experiencing their pre-theatre menu a few weeks earlier. We wanted to try the five course tasting menu and the wine flight. We've all had a lot of tasting menus in our time - some not so great - so we were crossing our fingers this would be good. We began with a sublime pig's cheek, which slipped down like velvet. This was followed by the most extraordinary tomato consomme which looked like nothing and tasted wonderful; rich, tomatoey and utterly delicious. Next the fish - slightly too overdone for my taste but good nonetheless and then the lamb. Or rather, a lamb fillet with slow cooked shoulder, excellent carrots and potatoes - altogether yummy. Finally a lemon posset which was lemon, sweet and just (like the starter) velvety. We left very satisfied.
We were really disappointed, we've tried the tasting menus at most of the top end restaurants in the City and were surprised to learn it would be a Blind one, the staff didn't know what would be on it, we've always been told what would turn up on the various plates, and most of it appeared to be ad hoc to be honest, the description of each dish hardly matched the products!
I think this was my 6th visit and yet again the good was fantastic. We were pre concert dining and drinking. We are the excellent value £22.50 2 courses which with 2 large glasses of wine and 10% service still came to £100. It’s not a cheap place but the foods as good as anywhere in manchester currently. Music was a little too loud (remember we were going to a concert so not oldies complaining here).
Came after reading Grace Dent's review in the Guardian (like a few others probably). Found the mushroom ravioli a little bland and lacking in punch. Duck was quite nice, steak was excellent, as were scallops. Service was disengaged, perfunctory, overtly attentive. Music was loud pop - totally out of sync with the type of food/prices. General ambience was a bit corporate. Disappointed as heard great things!
Wonderful experience - out waiter Jonathan was exceptional!
Service and ambience make this restaurant shine, it's great without being stuffy. There is background music and chatter, but you can still chat away without shouting. The booths are the best tables in my opinion.
Food is adventurous, portion sizes OK if you grab a couple of sides, and vegetarians are well catered for (Just as much attention goes into the veggie meals as the meat dishes). I just feel the prices for a la carte are 10-15% above where they should be, for the type of restaurant/meal, meaning for me it's a very occasional treat destination rather than somewhere I could become a regular.
What a great find! Predinner meal before a performance at the Bridgewater Hall, which was easy walking distance! I’m not vegetarian but I had both a mushroom ravioli starter and a asparagus, morel, potato and truffle main course! The flavours and presentation in both were outstanding! My fellow meat eaters were quite envious of my choice! Excellent!
Excellent food and service. Fresh ingredients and great presentation.
Our second visit here I brought my daughter for her birthday. We had the theatre menu it was absolutely beautiful, we all enjoyed every course. Very happy , very full thankyou
Lovely restaurant and excellent food. We had the Tomahawk which was just sensational and can't wait to go back again! Great to see Simon on the pass and making sure all perfect. A great experience with stunning food.
This restaurant was extremely well priced for the quality of the food and the service offered. Some of the best food we have had in Manchester and have high hopes that we might finally see a Michelin star coming to our city. Spacious dining area, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. A truely lovely evening.
Everyone was very attentive the food was lovely, I have already booked again .
Bit disappointed given the aspirations- no real standout dish on the tasting menu.
Warm welcome from the Maitre D, where our coats were hung up. Lovely spacious place with a mezzanine for private dining and open kitchen. We chose 2 courses from set menu. Ham hock with pickles and flat iron steak. Slight delay in taking our order, due to what looked like a staff briefing, but the chef called our waitress over. Waitress then attentive and explained the dishes when served. Starter and main course both delicious. My only criticism would be we weren’t asked how we’d like it cooked. Medium rare is fine for me, my companion would have preferred more medium, that said, she thoroughly enjoyed it. We both enjoyed a lovely glass of Merlot with it. There is a 10% service charge added, which I don’t really like, but to be fair, I would have tipped the equivalent.
We went to Wood Manchester after visiting A theatre in Manchester. We went for the 2 courses and a glass of fizz for £20.18, being the January special deal. The food was exceptional. I ate ham hock terrine followed by an amazing flatiron steak with marrowbone butter. My wife had a wonderful cauliflower soup followed by a chicken breast, both excellent. We shall definitely be back. Lovely experience.
The only thing i could find fault with were the hard biscuits !that came with the cheese plate
Very good, from seating to food to service and information on wine and food courses.
Lovely place but food is pricey for what you get and it's something you could put together yourself
We were hesitant as we had looked at the bad reviews - we could not be so wrong. I don't know which restaurant they were at but it wasn't this.
Our coats were taken, the temperature of the restaurant was perfect. The food was excellent to the point of this could be Manchester's first Michelin Star restaurant - hope so as it is worthy of one. We are from Yorkshire and my husbands appetite is as big as the county and he was nicely full.
We have eaten at many Michelin Star restaurants and this as does The Typing Room in Bethnal Green stand out for a star.
Really interesting and delicious food at Wood. Modern cuisine done this well is hard to find in Manchester. An interesting wine selection on offer as well. I'll definitely go back.
Lovely food & staff, would recommend
Wonderful food and wine. Decorated beautifully for Christmas. Great service. Will be going again soon!
This was our first visit which was our ladies that lunch xmas outing. We are alays looking for something new and different to eat so thought we would give Wood a try. Was really disappointed from the start, when we arrived our coats were not taken from us, I had to ask for them to be taken when we were shown to our table. We had a cocktail in the bar area before sitting, these were not taken to our table for us, usually with a restaurant of this calibre those first little touches that cost nothing mean a lot. When we got to out table there was a fab heater between our table and the one next to us as it was so cold. We wanted the 7 course taster menu but got told they only did the 5 course menu at lunch 😕..we opted for this, 1 was vegetarian 2 did not want fish, I was happy to have whatever dish was placed in front me, expecting at least one course to be fish ... well disappointed I got no fish 😩..we were not offered bread rolls we had to ask, we were not offered water we had to ask. The taster menu was not sufficient we left hungry and went to a bar and ordered food. Now I have had many a taster menu before and never had to resort to eating after I've left a restaurant before. I'm very sorry I have had to leave this kind of review as I was really looking forward to my visit and was hoping to return, but I'm afraid on my first impressions I probably won't be.
Having lived in Manchester for over 10 years I can't wait for a new restaurant to open which isn't a boring generic chain fresh out of London. Really had high hopes for Wood.
I was disappointed from the minute we walked in. Nobody offered to take our coats, now I know why! It was absolutely freezing. Admittedly it was an unusually cold day in Manchester but the room was so large and industrial it felt like an airport hanger despite the lovely open kitchen.
I would just like to say that the serving staff were excellent and cannot be faulted so thank you so much.
The starters were quite good. The mackerel was delicious especially the goats cheese and the pigeon was nice too but a bit of a rip off for only two slices at £10. Also, both were a bit cold too.
For the main we order the show stopper... the tomahawk for two. We were especially excited as it had recently been advertised as £50 on Tuesdays instead of £80 - tomahawk Tuesdays!
What an absolute disappointment. It was fatty and flavourless. When I mentioned this I was told as we ordered it quite rare the reason it was fatty was because had we ordered it medium it gets cooked more and it usually burns off the fat?!!
Fear not! We were told that given we didn't receive the full explanation of the cooking expectations of the tomahawk we would get it half price. Fair enough I thought, then the bill arrived... £80 down to £40.. wait hang on a minute isn't it tomahawk Tuesday?!! When questioned I was told I didn't choose it on the booking! There wasn't the option when I booked!!
Eventually the tomahawk was cancelled from the bill but the poor waitress had to be one to come and apologise profusely. The manger was nowhere to be seen. Absolutely unprofessional. Not only did you try to con me but you put your staff in horrible situations. Also, you kept the 10% service charge from the full bill price not the new amended price. Just hope that the kind waitress who served us received all the tip, not the manager.
Superb food, lovely staff, vibrant atmosphere and buzzing
I went to Wood for the first time with my parents who came from Paris to visit me, and we weren't disappointed. The food was absolutely gorgeous from start to finish, and the value for money is second to none. My parents were delighted and very surprised to find such a high standard restaurant in Manchester, and I am so happy I found Wood that I now want to go back for every special occasion I may have.
Two minor issues were that it was very loud and not fit for a fine dining experience. We were sat on those semicircles sofas and it made it very hard to have a proper conversation, because the music overpowered everything.
The other thing (which is a good thing in itself!) is that the side portions are massive, so one side to share is more than enough.
Great afternoon, tasting menu with wine flight. Couldn’t fault anything. Definitely going back!
Wood was amazing, fantastic food, great service l couldnt recommend it more highly.
couldn't fault the service, quality and presentation of the food - just felt it was a little expensive for what it is and where it is.
Fabulous customer service from start to finish. Fabulous food, fabulous decor, THE best playlist of background music I've ever heard in a restaurant. Our waiter for the evening went through the menu and explained everything in detail. The food was exceptionally presented and tasted beautiful. Would not hesitate to recommend and book again. GORGEOUS !!
I found the food really bland and dry..
Lack of seasoning and very basic, looked really pretty but didn't taste of anything.
It was a real let down.
The service on the other hand was exceptional they guy who served us couldn't of done enough, he was on the ball and tried his best to make sure we had a good evening.
But unfortunately I would not return
Superb and well located
Enjoyable dining experience
Limited menu. No year of vintage on the wine list so misleading.
Booked a Saturday night just a few days after opening, so expected a few bumps. Clearly it's still a bit new and shiney and the teams got some settling in to do, but they were all polite and mainly very attentive.
The location is good, placed conveniently next to some good bars for before dinner drinks, and the restaurant is lovingly new and shiney. The tables are very close to the open kitchen and there's a great vibe of cooking and artistry going on.
The Food, well, of course, it's just delightful. We were only 2, but had different dishes, all beautifully prepared, hot, and divine.
A great start to a new great place to eat. Shame everyone else will find out and it'll be difficult to get a table.
Had the tasting menu with matching wine flight. Food was delicious and wines were superb. Service was friendly yet professional and knowledge of the sommelier was impressive. Looking to go again asap. Best meal out in Manchester in a long time. Good luck to Simon Wood.
