Ypres Castle Inn
Its a really nice old pub in the heart of Rye - good honest food and most importantly dog friendly!
Family Sunday lunch. There is no waiter service for orders so ordering is from the bar (normal for a pub I think). My Dad had the crab cake while Mum and I opted for roast. The food was good. Quite homely. The crab cake was mostly crab which was good and it was tasty.
Nice comfortable pub with good food that coped well with a large family group with children.
Our favourite pub in Rye. Good beer and food and if the weather is good the best outside space in Rye
Bloody lovely food and really friendly.
Big thumbs up.
Reading reviews I tried the recommended fish pie, which was very nice. My husband went for the chicken sandwich, pleasant enough though the chicken was dry. Service was good.
Despite being hidden away in an alley way this pub is very popular for both food and drink. I’ve been several times now, the food has always been excellent and the staff extremely helpful. There is a lovely beer garden, dogs are made welcome and I can’t recommend it enough.
Very good. The dinner was nice and the ambiance quiet and warm.
A great Sunday lunch as usual in one of our favourite places in Rye.
Staff were so lovely, food was huge and delicious and the location was perfect
Disappointed as had high expectations after a previous visit last year. Standard of food has gone down and we waited quite a while for each course. Only 2 bar staff who served drinks, took food out to the bar and garden and cleared it all away as well.
Great food, well cooked. Friendly staff. Great beer garden
It's a tough one - the pub is lovely but maybe we caught it on a bad day. The food was great if simple - we had the roast beef and a roast pork there were no prices on the menu so when the basic plate of meat and 2 veg came out was shocked at the £15 price tag - it was nice but not that nice. There is no kids menu and although half portions available little to suit the tastes of the younger guests. The staff were moaning all be it quietly about complaints about the roasts but as we were seated near the bar we could hear them. It's not bad but it's not for us. We'd pre booked as an anniversary lunch which we had stated when booking and it was all a bit lack lustre. Shame really
Absolutely love this place ❤️.....I can’t praise it enough. I visit Ypres Castle as often as I can when I’m in Rye because the setting is historic & quirky...the food is delicious, very generous portions & very good value for money. The staff are just lovely - so friendly & welcoming & the proprietor is such a happy genuine man & he’s always very welcoming. And the best part which is essential for my family is that this gorgeous pub/restaurant is dog friendly 🐶
Ypres Castle is most definitely worth a visit - you won’t be disappointed 😊👌
They are very dog friendly. The food was very good and the service was also very friendly.
We had a 12 noon booking so expected quick service before peak lunch time. It was slow. 2 adult meals ok but the 2childrens macaroni cheese dishes were dried out and no sauce to be seen. Convenient place to eat when visiting the castle and St Mary church. Booking is essential on a Sunday...and probably anytime in summer holiday period.
Fab meal. Came really quick. Delicious Veggie salad. Gorgeous fish and chips. Staff couldn’t have been kinder. We went for our special needs son’s 18th and they really made us welcome.
Really lovely evening, food great and fantastic service!
Previously (and still because it’s such a lovely venue) we have loved visiting the Ypres. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere were part of why we chose it for a special family meal with two family guests, which we had been looking forward to for a while. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations and we were disappointed. This is largely attributable to the way the staff treated us (probably not purposefully but this is how it came across),as more of an inconvenience than customers out for a special evening. When we entered (not particularly slowly) one waitress rushed past me muttering in a sarcastic tone “can I just get past please”, she then proceeded to spend most of the evening propped against the bar glued to her phone in the dining area and looking reluctant when she came over to take our order, just wasn’t the lovely service that we had experienced before. I know it’s a pub (and a lovely one) and not a restaurant but I was surprised and disappointed the effect it had when we had wanted our evening to be special for our guests. Next time it’s a special occasion rather than just a quick snack we will use one of the many lovely restaurants in Rye. Perhaps this was just an unfortunate one off.
We booked Sunday lunch for our extended family party of nine, and decided to eat outside, as it was a bit noisy inside. This was fine, and worked really well. Good service, excellent food, served piping hot, and good selection of beers and cider. They also do half portions of a few of the mains for children. No specific menu for children, but this was fine. We really enjoyed our meal and the children were happy outside in the beer garden with plenty of tables.
Lovely hidden gem: staff we attentive, helpful and funny. Food came quickly as we delish! Carried on drinking in the beer garden after and had a thoroughly lovely evening. Highly recommend.
I absolutely love Ypres Castle; the building is quaint & charming set against the backdrop of the Castle & the view in the beer garden over Rye is stunning. Dinner and or lunch at Ypres Castle has now become a regular event for my family as we love the ambience & the staff are so friendly & welcoming and then there is the delicious menu which never disappoints....we particularly love the beer bartered cod & chips & mushy peas, which is really good value & the portions are very generous.
What makes Ypres Castle particularly great for us is that it is dog friendly.
A rustic pub with a relaxed atmosphere. Fantastic halloumi fries, best I’ve ever tasted, and delicious fish and chips with light and bubbly batter. Although the order was put through wrong, staff were apologetic and sorted out the error as quickly as they could. Very helpful and amenable staff.
Great food and service - thank you.
Not our first visit and definitely not our last.
good ordinary pub food, nothing exciting but pleasant staff. Don't expect haute cuisine
As a vegetarian I was disappointed with the menu selection - just one choice of main on the menu. Better range of starters for veggies. So I had a couple of starters rather than the main choice of Goan curry.
My meat eating friends had a much better selection and enjoyed their choices.
Being able to bring dogs was a bonus.
Little bit of a walk , but worth it
Lots of outside seating
Food very nice
I would recommend provided they either like to shout or can find a quiet corner. The only negative for us was noise. A hen party in the side room we had reserved at table in was impossible and so we moved to the bar and all was well 'till a group of lads appeared about 2045 and we simply could not converse, so we left.
Good food. Good service. Great views from the garden
Great pub food. We chose fish and chips and the inventive Italian chicken burger both of which were great value and beautifully prepared. The beer and wine by the glass selection is very impressive for a pub of this size. Decor is very tasteful and the lighting is low and romantic. Thank you to the staff and chef!
Lovely pub. Nice to see a log fire burning but it does serve to remind us how late summer is coming this year! Nice simple food, good for the price and in keeping with surroundings. Excellent Italian organic wine from a well chosen list. My brother enjoyed the real ale. Will surely return
Service was very poor, barely a smile out of the bar staff. Starter plates had not been cleared before our mains were bought.
The website says the pub is wheelchair accessible which is absolutely isn't- there are 2 ways in, either up or down several stone steps.
Had a great dinner at the Ypres Castle. Not over fancy but exactly what you want from a decent gastropub. A very friendly welcome too.
The food, service and ambience are excellent. If they had hot drinks available after a meal it would be 5/5.
For a fun night out. Not for romantic couples. Lovely old Inn. Loud music and good home cooked food. No frills. There is a nîce secluded pub garden with fairy lights. Imagine it would be great on a warm summer evening.
The food was ok not outstanding, did not like the three leg brewery beer on offer, house wine was good though. The staff was friendly and efficient
Given Sunday lunch menu in evening, so choices were limited ( no roasts) , but food was ok- basic pub grub.
Had a bank holiday lunch here. It has obviously been a hectic lunchtime and as late lunchers (2.15 sitting) there were no roast lunches left. They did, however come up with good alternatives.l which were very tasty. The pub had a good buzz about it and a good time was had by all. Lovely location close to the castle.
Very friendly traditional style pub. Service was excellent. Great value and good choice of local drinks
Lovely evening at the Ypres Castle. Warm welcome (including for our dog). Excellent ambience. Good service and nice food. Really enjoyable evening.
