Zaks - Mousehold
In 1976 local musician and entrepreneur Harvey Platt had the idea to bring a slice of America to Norwich after working for and with the American war machine in South East Asia and a later visit to San Francisco to meeting up with former musician buddies.
Harvey had the opportunity to purchase an old café caravan situated on Castle Meadow Norwich next to the old cattle market which is now the Vue cinema (Castle Mall) and that’s where the legend began.
Zaks opened in May 1976 serving the now famous chargrilled burgers in the “Original Zaks Caravan” wrapped in tin foil and cooked fresh to order in the American tradition.
If it is an authentic American dining experience you are looking for then Zaks is your kind of place. Burger, ribs and chicken are standards on our menu. Add to this succulent steaks, amazing desserts and a huge selection of authentic drinks (including shakes).
We can't wait to welcome you!!!
Yes only if better grill chef was on and not Daniel burgees was dry and tasted of nothing very under seasoned! After 7 years he still can’t make a good burger spent £25 on two burgers and we had mouth full each
Everything as always was spot on 😃
Always been a favourite of mine and will continue to be. The menu has, however, become more limited. In particular the mac and cheese has disappeared from the mains!
I hope this isnt a sign of the times. If you love Zaks - keep going!
lovely food. Monday deal is fab!!! coming every week for sure. C&B burger is delicious, as is the steak. sharing desserts are delicious. massive portions. great food. brilliant service. 5 star gor sure.
Great as usual. Ideal for casual eating out. Attentive service, but not in your face. Continues to be a favourite with our family.
It’s not as good as it used to be but still lovely food and our waitress was really nice. No waiting for the food or drinks. A little bit overpriced but we were there for a grown up birthday so didn’t mind too much as the service was great.
Everything you want for a burger bar. Good service atmosphere and burgers
After going there for many years was disappointed with the change of menu
My burger was overcooked and under seasoned the original burger wrapped in foil was only available as a double service was good and restaurant is still nice but let down with the selection of food
Zaks is always fun, portions generous as ever, the new menu's fine with plenty of choice, service friendly as ever, , lovely venue, only negative was the table was a bit sticky, otherwise all good.
Great service and good food. Nice dining experience. Well worth visiting.
Fantastic food, the burger was cooked to perfection and the brisket was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The service we received was top notch too. Well done Zaks.
Excellent as always. Not enthusiastic about recent menu updates but still one of the best.
We had a fantastic time, our server was lovely and our food was perfect we had the stack share meal and everything was perfect we came in on 24/09 in the evening.
Will definitely be back we eat out regularly and travel alot! All over the. World and have to say this was up there for overall experience, nice not to have music too loud either so we could chat.
Thanks so much for a lovely experience it was our daughters 21st and she loved it
GOOD FOOD, FRIENDLY SERVICE AS ALWAYS BEEN COMING HERE YEARS
Well been coming here and my family for years very disappointed food on horrible cheap plates less food not looked nice burgers had no taste very disappointed other daughter been past couple weeks they said same but thought we all would see but came up with the same thing gutted was our favourite place
Staff lovely helpful quick friendly fabulous!! Food yummy as always.
Food was lush as always and staff were very attentive and polite and a very relaxed atmosphere xx
Zaks was a lovely venue to enjoy a family meal and the service was fantastic couldn’t fault it.
A great place to eat.
Good food and friendly staff.
Can not wait to visit again.
Another family occasion with x5 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Bit of a last minute booking as we were let down at an entertainment Venue, but after this evening's excellent food and Service, we were quite glad we were. Had a great evening and such amazing value too...precious wonder it's a fav place of ours. Thank you Zaks! ;))
The burgers where nice and meaty but missing any seasoning at all very plain very disappointed after waiting so long to go there and costing so much to have a below average meal
My husband ordered a ginger beer from the soft drinks section of the menu but the waitress brought an alcoholic ginger beer, when he pointed it out to her she basically said it was his fault for not specifying. He hadn't even looked at the alcoholic drinks section so how was he to know there was an alcoholic version, surely if the waitress knew then she should have asked him which one when he ordered it. She did offer to change it but my husband doesn't like to waste things so agreed to keep what he had but said he didn't want to pay the extra as the alcoholic one was more expensive. However when we got the bill we were charged full price for the alcoholic one. A different waiter gave us our bill so we didn't want to question it again. It wasn't a big amount but it's just the principle. The food was ok but dont think we would go back again.
Maybe at a quieter time being early evening we thought it would be quiet but I could barely hear my family even my son found it loud
Everything was great, but the music was a bit loud. Apart from that we had a brilliant time, thanks
The service was excellent as always and staff very welcoming. Food was good although the salad lacked a range of ingredients as was only iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion. The salmon was delicious and cooked to perfection.
Alway enjoy going to Zak's, the kids enjoy it too. My usual order was no longer on the menu so I tried something new and wasn't disappointed. However I ordered a soda float (turned out to be a coke float) which was flat and the ice cream was sat on top of the glass, not a massive problem but it meant that when the ice cream eventually came in contact with the coke it would spill out onto the table. Definitely still going back though!
Excellent all round service and food. But still miss the banoffee pie.
Very good meal, the food was lovely especially the curly fries. Very good service, fast and friendly. Their loyalty card scheme meant I saved a fair bit of cash, that was a nice surprise as didn't realise we had so much on card
Total waste of £40 burgers were dry and over cooked food was luke warm and tasteless and very sparse toppings will not be returning
Sunday night at Zaks, turned out to be one of our best nights there ever. As a long term fan I have seen the ups and downs but this week everything was just right. Food was perfect, staff excellent as usual and atmosphere was just right. Well done Zaks!
Good service and not rushed, lovely ribs and chilli fries. Tried to resist pudding but the waffles got me ! Had 25th wedding anniversary there but kept it nice and low key - perfect
Lovely food, as always. Friendly and attentive staff.
Lovely meal friendly service, menu for the children was excellent and value for money, great atmosphere, will definitely be returning very soon
The restaurant has always been a favourite of ours for many years and have never had a bad evening whenever we have eaten here over the years
We have been using zaks for over 35 years as a family and sadly our meal Sunday 11th August was not up to scratch at all. The food was warm when it came to the table and the service just wasn't there. It spoilt my partners Birthday meal.
As great as always, never disappoints! Foods is delicious and service is also fantastic
A fav place of ours over several decades! Service was excellent (attentive and accommodating), as was the food and it's very difficult to fault it anywhere really. It was school hols, so a little 'busier' than usual, but we enjoyed our visit, as always. Thank you for the great service and ace value you consistently provide! : ) See you again soon! xx
We visited here for a family birthday meal as it’s one of our favourite restaurants, however we were a tad disappointed to find that the menu had changed significantly...only 5 starters & not a great selection...gone is the classic prawn cocktail replaced with Grilled prawn skewers!
Again the mains menu has been slashed significantly with less choice of burgers & less choice of specials...disappointing to see the JD burger gone was one of my favourites...opted for the classic C & B but again this is served up differently now, don’t get me wrong the food is still really good & we all enjoyed what we had, just a shame that they have changed what was a brilliant menu & what Zaks was all about 🙁
This was our return visit following a poor review after the change of menu.
It seems that our views had been listened to as service was great, meal quality had been improved significantly and the menu has been altered and seemed better. We were also supported by the waitress in making minor alterations to the Classic to suit my Mums taste buds.
We felt very well looked after this visit and there was plenty of relish and sauces too for our visit.
Still miss the old style fries but hey ho can’t have everything!!!
Well done Zaks; as a family we will be returning to our old haunt for celebration meals again.
On a side note we saw Zaks are offering a special lamb burger at the moment and we think that maybe a really good thing would be to revive all the old original burgers that left the menu on a month by month basis as a special come back.
Food was good but we did not receive the free meals for the children which were on offer at the time.
