In 1976 local musician and entrepreneur Harvey Platt had the idea to bring a slice of America to Norwich after working for and with the American war machine in South East Asia and a later visit to San Francisco to meeting up with former musician buddies.
Harvey had the opportunity to purchase an old café caravan situated on Castle Meadow Norwich next to the old cattle market.
Zaks opened in May 1976 serving the now famous chargrilled burgers in the “Original Zaks Caravan” wrapped in tin foil and cooked fresh to order in the American tradition.
If it is an authentic American dining experience you are looking for then Zaks is your kind of place. Burger, ribs and chicken are standards on our menu. Add to this succulent steaks, amazing desserts and a huge selection of authentic drinks (including shakes).

We always go to poringland as it’s our favourite Zak’s but we were really impressed. We haven’t been to waterside for years. Last time it was ok but this time was brilliant. Great decor, music was good. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Most of all the food was delicious and we used our points card to pay towards the meal so was another bonus.

12 in our party, i pre booked for a birthday celebration and we weren’t disappointed! Staff were friendly and very helpful! We were greeted at the door and shown to our table, given a few minutes to get settled in before asking about our drinks order, given time to make choices on the menu and then to order food, we had members who had food intolerances and Zak’s was more than happy to tweak items to make them safe for them. The whole evening didn’t feel like we were rushed in anyway! We arrive 7:30 and left a little after 10:30 fantastic night fantastic atmosphere! Will return

Booked for a 18th birthday meal very disappointed that we had to sit in the conservatory although there was heaters on it was cold. As we booked a few weeks ago we expected to sit inside as it was a special.

Really disappointed, went for my 40th birthday lunch meal with my mum who doesn't go out often. Ordered her a nut burger and she got something completely different so didn't ear her meal. I asked waitress if it qas a nut burger and she said no it was something else what we hadn't even heard of! The other waitress in a black top came over a took the price of mums meal off our bill which was really lovely her but spoilt what was ment to be a nice meal out

Service lacking, weren’t asked how our meal was once it was served., Fat Boy Ribs tasteless and made me feel sick later that evening and the following day. Side salad ordered and never brought to the table (weren’t charged which was good) - all meals very bland. Disappointed, won’t be returning as prices high considering poor quality of the food.

Amazing food, your not sat on top of each other there’s nice space between tables. Everyone was welcoming and friendly! Can’t wait to return!

We haven’t been out for ages as it’s always an expensive time with four kids! But we were lucky enough to have been given some Zak’s vouchers for Christmas, we all had an amazing time, food was delicious ,big portions and so much to choose from. We also had dessert yum yum!
