Zama Punjabi Restaurant
The food was very good but there was no atmosphere in the restaurant. The door was wide open to the street, not many were in the restaurant and the starters and mains were all served at the same time. We ate our food and left and didn’t feel comfortable staying longer than that. We were done in an hour.
Lovely authentic restaurant with tasty food and relaxed atmosphere
Zama is probably the best punjabi food you'll find outside of the region. There's nothing in Brighton that beats it.
The food was excellent but true service has been slow on the numerous occasions that I have been there. It takes a long time for the food to come out. Even started it’s like once you order they somehow forget about you and you ah e to ask for your food in order to get it to the table. It was great that there was a complimentary gift as it was my boyfriends birthday
This was our 2nd visit here, we found the food very hot and spicy first time so had different dishes this time. We found these other dishes very hot and spicy also! This unfortunately means that we probably will not go here again.
Food was great, service very good. Lots of things on the menu that we want to try so will be back.
The curries, breads and rice are delicious and very authentic. I make better dhals at home though - not that many people order dhal in a restaurant anyway! Other than the dhals, the food is delicious! Definitely my favourite Indian restaurant! :)
A noisy restaurant. The lamb curry dishes were good, but the naan was thin and cold.
The rice was disappointing and also barely warm. The plates were cold.
The Traditional Indian beers were not yet in the fridge so I was advised to pick an alternate brand... I went Italian!
One of the two main course curry dishes, was not ready (or just forgotten) and arrived much later, for which 10% was taken off the bill.
All in all, a less than average experience.
Overpriced food served (albeit with a smile) in a poorly organised and noisy environment.
There are several excellent Indian restaurants in the area... Zama isn't one of them. I Won't be back.
Lovely food, will come again
Oh so different from your usual curry house, Punjabi food is on offer here. This lovely restaurant gives you friendly, efficient service, delightfully tasty food and a great atmosphere. I would caution people to be wary of the hot curries, I love them, they are full of flavour not just heat, but, as the menu rightly points out, not for the faint-hearted! Also, some of the medium curries, and even the onion bhajis are erring on the hot side, but this is not a problem for me. The mild dishes are very tasty too, have not tried anything there that disappointed in any way. I went with my friends recently on my recommendation, which always makes me trepidatious, but I shouldn't have worried, everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Will happily return, again and again.
Food was pretty next level. Particular stand-outs were the tandoori prawns (huge, beautifully cooked with a genuine charcoal quality) and the Zama chicken curry (complex, rich slow-cooked gravy). Breads were exactly right. Bit of a mistake with a missing dish, but it was very busy and we were offered free dessert to compensate. Had over ordered so nobody went hungry anyway. New favourite in town!!
Went with friend for lunch food very good spicy and at lunchtime the naan with fries was enough for me.. will go again good value.
The staff handled a difficult situation with calm professionalism after two men on another table, who were being rather loud, became abusive to myself and my partner. Our evening was not ruined thanks to the way it was handled by the staff and we will be back. Food was great and we highly recommend Zama.
Amazing food and staff, had such a good night. 100% will be back soon!!
Great food and nice, friendly service. One small complaint: please provide warm dinner plates for your customers - eating off small, cold side plates doesn’t work!
Good tasty food, friendly service but not warm on a cold night with few other diners. Just to note, the restaurant operates a policy of not allowing bookings between 6.45 and 8.15pm through Open Table, so we booked for 6.30pm and had the restaurant to ourselves until 8pm. would return.
Food was good it was just the service that was a bit shambolic.
Great tasting food. Not sure how authentic it is but tasted good. We went for small plates and over ordered a bit.
What a great little find. Incredible food. Generous portions and wonderful staff. It’s not often you find a lunch deal on a weekend either and this one was well worth the visit!
We were disappointed. We ordered cocktails. Two of our party had the espresso martinis but one tasted unpleasant. We pointed this out and the staff said they had some espresso left so added it to one of the drinks. They offered to change it, but seemed incredulous when we said yes. I ordered something which they then didn't have so swapped to a cosmo which two of the party also had. Mine arrived looking and tasting completely different and was much sweeter so not at all the mixture of sweet and sour i had expected. I didn't send it back as we had already had enough fuss, but if you are going to offer cocktails at quite a high price it is reasonable to expect at least some attempt at consistency.
We ordered the food and the staff checked if we wanted to have our street food/small plates separately which we did, however they brought on of the main dishes with the other small plates. Then the rest of the dishes arrived they brought a chicken dish that no-one had ordered. We said we had asked for a fish dish and they said that this was it and they were just mistaken in what it was called. However, it turned out to be a chicken dish which was only discovered after one of our party had added it to his plate which had the masala chips on it. He doesn't eat chicken and fortunately hadn't actually tasted it before we realised it was wrong. The staff took the dish away and there was a delay in getting the fish dish. I don't know if the order went wrong or if someone else ended up with the fish. when they did deliver the correct dish there was an apology but it didn't occur to them to bring some additional masala fries as we had wasted the best part of a portion. When the bill came there was no goodwill deduction to recognise the poor service. The waiting staff are young and the whole thing felt very slapdash. They were very busy but the staff need much better training in how to manage in what is not a cheap night out. Some of the food was very nice but we won't go again.
Lovely decor with great food and efficient polite staff , Will definitely go again
Great food! Better than Chilli Pickle, delish and will be back for sure
lovely place, service was little up and down, sadly didn't get all the food in same time as we asked, starters Mix grill tasted great, but the main thali dish for wasnt that impressive, didn't feel like the flavour was there and meat was dry.
our Vegans were happy with their choices, it would be great if there was thali options for vegan as well.
over all lovely place and the staff was friendly and food was good.
I gave 3 stars only for ambiance as the restaurant was very hot and the noise level was 'energetic' due to a very noisy party of men.
Food was very good and not your usual curry house fare, only experienced similar in Birmingham previously.
Staff were attentive without 'hovering' - we couldn't eat all we'd ordered and when we commented on this fact the waiter suggested a doggy bag which was much appreciated.
We were a party of 2 generations and were pleased that the other customer were also mixed in age range.
Fabulous in every way but nirvana ain’t cheap !
Being parents of a little one that loves a good curry, we were not disappointed. We will be going back again. The staff were attentive, the food was 'traditional ' with a twist.
Charming! Very good food and atmosphere
The food was absolutely gorgeous, really delicious! Also the staff were extremely lovely and looked after us really well...really enjoyable evening there will definitely go again
Our first visit was to a recently included Sunday lunch opening. We chose from a lunchtime Menu offering two options including a selection of choices for starter and main. Beautifully cooked , authentic taste and so different from your bulk standard Indian meal. We'll return on an evening to try the Thali.
Great food. Great service. Been a few times and would definitely go again
Love the food and the service was great. Was just quite loud on Friday when we attended
Not much to recommend really, popadoms are not very nice, starter not very good and a lamb biriyani which didn't come with a vegetable curry on the side.
In all the other times I've eaten this in other curry restaurants always has a vegetable curry otherwise it's just to dry. To top it all off they do small canned beers at £5.
Went to Zama on Saturday with my sons and friends. We had the most wonderful lunch two courses with sides and nibbles to start with for £9.95.Unbelievable value for such delicious food this is the best Indian restaurant in Brighton and Hove!! The staff are wonderful very professional but very friendly. Will be going back again this is my second time and I recommend anyone that is looking for good genuine Indian cuisine to visit Zama.I promise you ,you will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10!
Our 2nd time here. The smells are intoxicating as you approach the restaurant, and the sauces and dishes you are served live up to the aromas. The tandoori haloumi is great - the tandoori chicken was great on first visit, somewhat drier on the second. Rogan josh was fine as were the aubergine bajis, the taka dhal and the raita. The "Bread basket" gives you three different naans for £4 so its worth ordering. The staff are an absolut delight and the customers all seem to be enjoying themselves immensely. Nicely situated in the centre of Hoves "restaurant mile" and keenly priced to boot. We will be going back,.
The refurb of the restaurant is to a high standard and the restaurant looks fantastic. A varied menu, we had two starters, two mains and two sides but we found that every dish to be too hot for our taste unfortunately. Would recommend the coconut ice cream at the end for a welcome relief.
Great food, great service. Really nice to have an Indian but not the normal run of the mill Indian.
Shame they ran out of there signature beer.
The food was very good, but there were too few waitstaff. They were clearly flustered and struggled to manage all the tables. One dish and all our rice had been forgotten and needed to be re requested. This was a Saturday night at just after 8pm, they should have been aware that they would have a full restaurant and therefore plenty of staff were required.
One starter a bit cold; long wait for main course. Otherwise, the food was excellent.
Very nice food, we ordered starter and mains but come all together! Bit odd but worked and was more like eating a Tali.
Would highly recommend and will definitely try an evening next time.
Nice food, pleasant, airy modern restaurant, pleasant staff although service a little slow
