locally raised lamb with mint-jalapeno sauce
Moroccan couscous, root vegetables, stewed tomatoes, choice of chicken or braised lamb
free-range chicken breast
This was the “second chance” we gave the the place and obviously a mistake! Cheap ingredients overloaded with salt—sometimes lumps of unmelted salt. Blaring music with thumping bass which combined with the poor acoustic design made the room deafeningly loud. Servers obviously don’t know the menu and what they’re supposed to do. In short nothing has changed since the pre-pandemic times.
So happy to be able to dine in at Zaytoon again -- and thank you for having vegetarian moussaka!
More servers needed, they were slammed and couldn't keep up. Limiting tables might be besting till staffing improves. Also the phones rang off the hook for the entire hour I was there. Food was delicious so I will be back to try again.
Excellent food, service was a little slow.
Zaytoon is a new discovery for me. This was my second visit, which I booked soon after my first, as I enjoyed it so much the first time. There were many wonderful lactose free options for starters and entrees which is essential. Sadly, all deserts were laden with lactose.
Food was well prepared and tasty. Good presentation. We had a new server who failed to come check on us. They needed better supervision for this person. We had to wait quite some time to get their attention to order and then we had to go look for the waitstaff 2x to get our bill. In general, it was a good food experience but inexperienced staff need more support.
Delicious Mediterranean fare in a modern setting. One of my favorites is the halloumi salad, any of the lamb options are also a winner choice!
Great food and service. A lot of choices. Great looking bar, although did not get a chance to try. The starters and the salad were excellent. No hesitation in recommending.
Food and drink were really good. Open Table reservation was not in their system when we arrived. We were given seats at the bar, without any attempt to find us a table.
First-time diners; loved the lamb shishkabob over couscous. Great to share dishes to enjoy different flavors. Great desserts, too. All dishes were light and healthy.
Love this place, always great food and friendly service!
Great food, ate indoors. Appreciated the increase ventilation as we emerge from the pandemic(!). I will be back.
Delicious food, good service. Outside seating was a little noisy due to street noise, but otherwise pleasant.
The food was quite different and quite good. The service was quite bad. On more than one occasion we had to signal our waiter to ask for our appetizers, our drinks, our entrees, and the bill. In their defense I think it has been very difficult in finding good help, but someone could have looked in our direction
Get the hummus. Extra smooth, creamy, and delicious.
The vegetarian spanakopita is one of our favorite dishes of all time, anywhere (including Greece).
The food is amazng! Seriously delicious. A++++!
Arugula salad with chicken shawarma was tasty, but the moussaka was okay, it’s not what we’re used to get at other restaurants. Atmosphere is lively but quite loud, a little difficult to have conversations among friends. Overall we had a nice meal.
Our 2nd time here, 1st being several years ago and just appetizers & drinks at bar (very good then, btw!). This visit reminded me of why we need to make this a favorite hangout!
Food has exquisite flavors, textures and techniques... and I'm happy to say, decent portions! (you actually feel you are there to have a meal rather than admire the "presentation", which is also lovely, btw). I have no idea how they get the cubed Halloumi in the salad so light and dry, so tasty and zero grease! We also had the calamari as a starter and it was excellent. Tender and served with a light dusting of crunchy pine nuts. For main course I ordered the Bamia (okra, lamb, and tomato stew over rice). Delicious! Hubby had the Beef Kabob (sirloin steak with mint-jalapeno sauce), served with grilled veggies and couscous. Very tender and tasty, too. Cocktails before ("Arabian Nights" with Mezcal for me, Old Fashioned for him). Good Cab by the glass with main course. Shared a Tahini Sundae dessert (vanilla ice cream, tahini, date syrup, halvah). So good! Sipped an Arak with that (traditional Middle-Eastern spirit of anise). Perfect!
Service: attentive, aware, personable and members of the staff share some of the service & pickup jobs happily.
Decor: pleasing to the eye, simple yet comfortable seating. Noise level allows conversation and a bit of intimacy. We arrived at 6pm for our reservation; most tables empty, we were seated in the back, which is quieter (further from the bar area); noticed all tables filled well before the time we left. Our first indoor dining experience since COVID; Zaytoon following guidelines (masks on staff; sanitizer on tables; tables spaced appropriately). Reservations are for indoor seating only. Outdoor area can be "walk-in".
Good to see Zaytoon doing well! We will definitely be back. A neighborhood treasure only a few blocks walk from home!!
Great neighborhood find! We celebrated a CAL graduation. A memorable event.
Savory and delicious...hummus and mushroom starter great!
Food is always so amazing! My first time dining inside and loved the ambiance
Great food, excellent service. Noise level was a bit much.
authentic says it all Lamb makhlaba - full of flavor; the lamb is tender annd really well cooked.
The service was great - attentive, and returned multiple times to take our order in parts (drinks, starters, mains) as we were having trouble deciding between the great options. Drinks and food were all great, the special starters were especially delicious - roasted brussels sprouts and marinated shrimp.
Zaytoon is elegant, with ambience that is lovely, wait staff who are wonderfully attentive, and food that is non pareil. I ordered the leg of lamb, and it was succulent, beautifully seasoned, with al dente couscous in a tomato puree. My daughter ordered the tender chicken kebab. We both had exquisite cocktails, mine with a sumac/salt rim, hers with arac and lemon-- a delicious counterpoint to the main dishes.
Amazing food, great waiter! and you need to try the Sultan and Lentil Soup.
They have a very nice outdoor table set up for Covid, most seating still allows you to feel you are dining at a restaurant despite being in the street.
Overall, the food is just okay. My favorite thing is the hummus which is great, but everything else I’ve tasted is just okay. It’s a little expensive for just being okay.
Good food, severely understaffed
Food is always outstanding and it was nice to be back inside the beautifully decorated dining room.
The waiter was very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent!
Went for lunch on a Saturday, had a choice between inside or outside, chose inside but either would have been fine. Shared a Mazza plate with fresh pitas.... Hummus, tabouleh, baba ganoush, a couple of falafel... all delicious. And the Spanikopita was flaky and stuffed with a mixture of spinach and mushrooms and feta... perfect appetizer. I think any of the appetizers would have been delicious so will have to go back to try others! The chicken Kabob (Mary’s organic chicken) was perfectly cooked and the rice and salad on the plate were perfect additions. Very generous portions. There were 3 choices for dessert and we chose the Tahini Sundae to share. Not overly sweet and the date syrup on top was the perfect “sauce” for it. Will definitely return to try other dishes on the menu! What a “find” in Albany, worth making the trip!
My new favorite place in the Bay Area. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat indoors and far from anyone else. The lamb maklouba melts in your moth and is exquisite. The moussaka was disappointing, however. The mezzanine plate was varied and tasted fresh and the bread was one step up from grocery store bought.
Ambiance was anything but frantic and servers appeared out of nowhere. Yes, I will dine here again!
Good food, sitting outside is not always very pleasant but it is a good restaurant
I love the food and service at Zaytoon. It is consistently excellent--I love how delicious everything at the restaurant is! Thanks!
Teamwork makes the dream work.
Astonishingly good Middle eastern food, made by a gifted, chef named Issa, and served by staff, who really care about what they do. The Bar is great, and some of the house drinks, like the "Arabian nights" designed by brilliant bar manager Kalyan, are just amazing. If you're a first-timer, I recommend The Mashawi combo plate with Beef and Kefta, (ground beef and lamb. you can choose other options) since it was just something to revel in. with perfectly grilled vegetables, and the Kefta was tender and perfect as was the beef with just the right amount of char on it for that grilled taste, and perfect rice, the plate itself visually, was something that could have wound up at the MOMA, but wound up in my tummy.
The addition of a glass of Lebanese Ksara red wine, and some "Toum", a sauce very few restaurants in the bay area even try to make, because it cannot really be made without the participation of someone’s grandmother, took this meal into the next lever.
Don't sleep on the Toum.
For dessert I ordered Baklava, not expecting a perfectly deconstructed Baklava, in 1/2 inch squares, underneath a scoop of delicious vanilla ice cream with a minimal ribbon of caramel, To be honest, this is best to tackle with a friend. (Which I did the following week)
Finally, I was impressed with the bartender Natasha, who made me a custom tequila drink, (I always test the bartenders by asking them to make me a "fancy schmancy tequila drink" which she did, and killed it with "The Natasha", which was what I started out with.
To end my night I had a nice shot of Arak, a liquor from the Levant, which tastes of hints of anise and grape, perfectly ending my night.
Zaytoon is a restaurant with chefs on a mission, with a kitchen and staff that have a real heartbeat, and a drink menu you won't find anywhere else.
Ambiance: Warm and quiet
Food: To die for
Staff: Super friendly
Overall: 5 stars
Food was delicious. They could be a bit more thoughtful with vegetarian options, in my opinion. My wife and I enjoyed our meals, and the restaurant was modern and comfortable.
quite impressed with the warm stuffed grape leaves.
Dessert menu lacked gluten free option.
Everything was fantastic, I will definitely plan return
We love Zaytoon! We have been going there about once a week since we moved to the nieghboorhood. Great atmosphere and delicious food with healthy options and a friendly staff. All the things!
