Zen Japanese Restaurant
Recently, so called Japanese restaurants crowd the streets we live on. However, many of these places have no knowledge of Japanese history, culture, or cuisine and they focus more on making a profit. We, proudly being Japanese, believe strongly that running a Japanese business requires having an understanding of the fundamentals of Japanese cuisine.
- Surfaces sanitised between seatings
- Common areas deep cleaned daily
- Digital, disposable or sanitised menu provided
- Sanitiser or wipes provided for customers
- Limited number of seated diners
- Distancing maintained in common areas
- Extra space between tables
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
- Waiting staff wear masks
- Diners must wear masks unless eating or drinking
I recently went to Zen Restaurant in Markham for dinner and my boyfriend and we enjoyed the chef's menu. The quality of ingredients used was of the highest standard and very fresh. Also, the servers were very attentive. Overall it was a wonderful dining experience.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in GTA. Expensive but get the quality worth.
Great sushi as usual...seiichi sensei always deliveres the best to their customer. That's why I keep coming back for the past 20 years (from Eglinton to now Markham location) and still one of my favourite sushi place in GTA. Definitely recommended.
That's our most favourable Japanese restaurant within Toronto.
Came for lunch omakase. Courteous service and the food was amazing as always
Why am I have to typed minimum Fifty characters in order to submit the review?
Excellent food quality and service as usual.
I have a very enjoyable lunch with them
Fantastic food and services but a little bit pricey to me.
I had such a great time with their services and wonderful foods✨
My favorite restaurant . Always good atmosphere, great service and good quality food they provide.
The quality of food and service was excellent. The only concern is you can't reserve counter table through OpenTable.
Sushi is as good as some of the best sushi restaurants in Tokyo! Service is welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. Love this restaurant.
LOVE. Just amazing omasake! Came here to celebrate valentines day and no regrets here. Can't wait to visit again. This and their udon location, just loving the zen empire.
The lunch menu don't have much choice and the sashimi served during the lunch is small and not as fresh as those served during dinner time.
With the price that they charged during lunch hours, I don't recommend it for my friends.
Never disappointed with their fresh sushi and sashimi
It was alright, nothing special. I had better omakase experience elsewhere.
Always the best authentic Japanese restaurant in town
The fish for preparing the sashimi is the freshest one I have come across with in North Toronto.
The dessert for my wife's birthday is excellent.
Definitely a Japanese Restaurant choice for special occasion.
The best Japanese restaurant in Markham
the food very good. finally found the feeling of Japanese cuisine
We had the Omakase sushi menu at the bar. It was a nice experience as the chef told us what he made for us as he served the sushi one piece at a time.
Thank you Chef Cho and the rest of the staff!
Zen is our family's favourite special occasion restaurant; the food is always beautiful and exquisite. Thank you for another delicious meal.
the finsh is very fresh. i like display of dishing up.
The food was incredible.
Outrageously good. Wait staff and host were also very accommodating.
Amazing and knowledgeable staff! Excellent food :)
Definitely a gem, undoubted one of the best sushi restaurants in GTA. My wife and I had their sushi course and from the appetizer to the dessert, every serving was so delicious but having the first sushi plate of six and then the next plate with seven nigiri all made the sushi dinner so special. Shari with light red vinegar rice was simply a treat. Service was attentive and gracious with real Japanese style "omotenashi". Really appreciated a thoughtful touch of red and white monaka ice cream for our anniversary!
We have a wonderful lunch with friendly service. Quality of my sashimi order is fresh and worth the value. I highly recommend to my friends to try the lunch.
Great sushi and Japanese cuisine, the rice can be improved better!
Omakase sushi and sashimi set
Pros: pretty presentation, special consideration for birthdays, they bring out special dessert, the appetizers were the best part of the meal, all very unique and a nice addition to just sushi or sashimi
Cons: With reservations the wait was 20mins, we were forgotten about until we actively asked to be seated again
Both my friend and I had upset stomach after the meal, given we had nothing out of the ordinary earlier in the day and the overlap is the set, it’s hard to imagine what else it could have been
Food: Sushi rice was not fresh and extremely subpar, hard and fell apart, I haven’t experienced this even with prepackaged sushi in a long time
For a special night, the atmosphere was very mediocre, while that’s understandably hard to control by the restaurant, it’s worth noting if you are going for quiet ambiance (for example kids on watching movie loudly) on the other hand, it IS family friendly
Overall: Sad to say it was a disappointing experience. Not all details were considered. While service was pleasant, nothing special and almost felt routine like - no personal touch
Not worth the price tag because other omakase in the same or even lower price range offers much better experience and virtually none of the cons mentioned
Rice had too much moist...
Service was disappointing
I’ve been there since three years ago, and I was very satisfied taste and price. But this time I thought sashimi’s quantity were fewer and Udon Dashi taste was not like before. We enjoyed their quality of soup, not this time.
Price stays as before, which is good but they should not cut down the quality, I hope keep the quality and if necessary they could make price up. I and my friends and family like Zen,
so I want tell them.
Very good food, very authentic Japanse food. Great service and ambience. Felt like I was in Japan for a little while.
AAA+++ can’t go wrong coming to Zen
Service was fast and friendly. Food was exquisite and creative. Ingredients were fresh.
Great service and food. Amazing overall experience. Highly recommended.
The ambience and decorations don't quite fit with the prices though. We were way over dressed ! When you pay $180 for a course meal, you kind of expect better ambience.
I had wonderful lunch with family and friend visited us from HK, their excellent services and Foods are best in town. Especially the Tai head set, even the slice of ginger taste so good too. Our family are super fans and will go again.
One of the most over priced Japanese restaurant in Markham, since the move to Markham, the restaurant is focus on Chinese client and it lost the original Japanese atmosphere and culture. The lunch menu is extremely over price, we have a female friend order a grill miso mackerel off the lunch menu, it was priced at $18.5 and with no soup, rice. if you want to add rice and soup it will cost you another $5.5. It came out with one thin slice of Mackerel, and the taste is just so so. This is ridiculous for such a price.
I had a Chirashi, if you know what a proper Chirashi in Japan is, it is supposed to be slice of sashimi onto of sushi rice. And with so many places I had Chirashi in both Japan and Toronto, Zen is the only restaurant to put small chucks of sashimi with a 8 slice of sashimi on it. As you know the small chucks are normally coming from left over parts. This place is just not simply over price, it is a place does not take pride on Japanese culture and food. The original owner is Japanese when it first open many years ago. And I was a customer back in the days. Now I don't even know if the owner is still the same Japanese only, now I will say the chef and server are at least 70% Chinese. I will not recommend any of my friend to Zen if they want to have a true Japanese food experience. There are more authentic Japanese restaurants in Toronto now
I did mention that it was a birthday on my reservation but nothing was done..
A bit disappointed on that..
