Rats Restaurant - Grounds for Sculpture
Food was a big disappointment. Best part was the Grounds for Sculpture before we sat to eat our meal
What a lovely dining experience at Rats! Our reservation was for later in the day but we wanted to eat earlier and they were happy to accommodate us. We started with the cheese board which was fabulous! A nice variety of cheeses and the apple strawberry jam was to die for! Our waitress was so nice and attentive. My friend had the steak and frites which he said was delicious! I enjoyed the burger and thin cut crispy French fries. Overall it was a wonderful experience.
Unfortunately our experience at Rats was a huge disappointment. After waiting so long to try such a revered restaurant we are quite shocked by what we found. The waiter acted like we were a nuisance and not only did we have to wait a while for him to come and introduce himself and give us our menus, but he forgot to even bring our drinks (we had to remind him we had placed our order and were waiting) and then we waited far too long for our main course to arrive. Unfortunately the food didn't make up for the poor service. We had made this reservation as a special birthday treat and the food was so overpriced for what it was. It was mediocre at best; and actually I'm amazed Rats isn't embarrassed by what it is serving for being such an expensive and apparently 'quality' restaurant. Obviously the surrounding is pretty and we really enjoyed the sculpture grounds, but were quite shocked by our dining experience. Please consider saving your money for somewhere that understands service and good food. This is the first OpenTable review I've written but felt it important to give a cautionary tale to others who have the same expectations we did. Enjoy the gardens and eat somewhere else!
It was a beautiful restaurant with excellent service. Unfortunately the food was not. The pork schnitzel was tough, the soup was warm and had to be sent back . The trout was served skin side up which was unusual, it was suppose to be served with potatoes. Maybe one tiny one under the fish
Rats is a very unique establishment, the restaurant is located in the private grounds of a sculpture garden which has a feeling of stepping back in time into 18th century France.
The food and service is good and the general ambiance is pleasant.
Overall experience was great! Apps, sides and dessert were all very good, however my short rib entree was extremely dry and I could not eat it. Did get a few drinks comped. Overall a very nice place and would go back to try a different entree and enjoy the ambiance.
Never disappointed when we have dinner at Rat's. Excellent food and a very relaxing ambiance. We took advantage of the three course restaurant week menu. There was a nice variety to please the palates of all of the members of our dining party. Two of us had the wine flight accompaniment. Generous pour and well matched to each course.
We were seated immediately upon arriving as we had reservations and were given a choice of sitting inside or out which was much appreciated. We dined al fresco and were able to gaze at the beautiful scenery throughout our meal. It was my daughter's birthday and I had arranged to have a candle put in her dessert which was seamlessly presented at the end of the meal. The prices are high but the service and the food was excellent. It's the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, especially on a warm summer night.
Very great service and ambiance. Loved the cozy table upstairs with the lovely couch
From the moment we walked in the hostess was very accommodating and kind. we had a lovely table. wait staff was great. Food was delicious. I thought the price fixed menu was excellent value and variety of options. It's such a beautiful setting. We'll be back!!
Our server Marco could've been of a higher caliber for a restaurant of this pedigree.
His english is difficult to understand which makes for an uncomfortable interaction and need for much repetition.
I also think he was overloaded, i.e., was serving too many tables at once and was not managing that effectively.
We received dessert menus but he took too long getting back to our table that we lost interest and didn't order any.
The food was superb and if the service did not include the negative bullet points listed above, I would certainly give everything 5 stars.
We were fortunate to enjoy the outdoors seating next to the small lake and it was like being in a Monet painting. A bridal party posed on the bridge, fish swam in the water and ducks had to be shooed away. Appetizers of escargot and cheese (with GF bread) were wonderful. Main course of medium rare duck and scallops were delicious and flavorful. The creme brulee is amazing and the brownies with malted milk ice cream the perfect finishing touch. Our server carefully balanced checking on us with giving us a peaceful anniversary dinner. Our experience was exceptional unlike others recently mentioned.
We brought friends from out of state to see the Sculptures and then stayed for lunch. The total experience was five star.
The restaurant was wonderful. We were seated in the “Bon compains “ room which was an unexpected treat and the food and service completed the afternoon.
Our friends were delighted by everything about Rat’s and Grounds for Sculpture.
As members, we have been there before and will definitely return.
Setting is amazing. Mussels were great, sandwiches nothing special, service great. Would definitely eat here again.
Overall the experience was good, i had made a reservation in advance and requested specific seating and even though the restaurant was not busy, the hostess chose not to honor our request even though it was available. Other than that we enjoyed our visit and the food was very delicious
We had a wonderful experience, from the maitre d' at the front desk to our wonderful waitress to the unforgettable ambience and delicious food. Relaxed but exceptional restaurant!
Very slow service
Took advantage of Restaurant Week.....beautiful restaurant with patio dining overlooking Monet like pond. Great beet salad and homemade bread/popovers. Short Rib and Trout were delicious. Desserts were rich and decadent. Service was attentive and helpful even during a very busy Friday night. Take advantage of location and explore Grounds for Sculpture with a glass of wine prior to dinner. Great happy hour during week too!
We truly loved eating at Rats! The food, ambiance, and service were excellent. The only complaint was that, although, we had dinner reservations for 6:30, we had to wait an additional 35 minutes, due to our table not being ready, therefore, we were not seated until 7:05 p.m. Also, the parking lot was extremely full. After having rode around for 10 minutes trying to locate a parking space, I had to make a parking space next to the curb along the driveway of the restaurant!
Food was served in a timely manner. We were able to change our reservation time to allow us to order from the dinner menu.
We had a table outside and the vista was lovely. Service was excellent and the food was delicious,
We had a reservation and arrived on time, but we were told we might not have a table for some time. Although that got cleared up, it was an odd way to start. We did eventually get a nice table and had a lovely lunch.
We sat outside because the weather was conducive to it and the atmosphere was fabulous... the flowers are gorgeous and sitting near the water was very relaxing. The waiter was not overly friendly but it did not detract from our meal. I would return and would recommend others do as well!
Excellent combination of service and decor we live in Hamilton lakes dr behind the restaurant but it was our first time and it exeeded or expectations be back real soon.
Service was way too slow and forgetful. Food was bland and of low quality.
Refried meat, cold fried and old sauce. I believe this is not the rule, just a bad experience...the view is nice.
My husband and I sat outside next to the pond for dinner, the ambiance was absolutely lovely. There were a few bugs - as to be expected with outdoor dining. The view over the pond was just idyllic. It was restaurant week so for $35 per person we each got an appetizer, entree and dessert which is a phenomenal value. The French onion soup was out of this world. Go hungry!
It was wonderful experience. Great food, atmosphere was just a beautiful.
We were seated right away and got a table on the patio overlooking the pond and grounds for sculpture. The server Marco was very pleasant and well prepared and was helpful with pointing out vegan options. The food was great and was served promptly. The path and Monet bridge from Grounds for Sculpture were a beautiful way to enter the restaurant. We will definitely be back.
First we came in from the sculpture garden, your sign said entrance closed for private party, really, we were not walking around a mile to drive in for front door, so we stepped over and came in. Second, we were seated by the door, people kept coming in and out leaving the door open, very noisy and distracting. Why serve brunch all day? Not very good.
Everything was very nice as usual
True definition of a dining experience! Amazing Parisian theme. Came early and walked around the water and observed the sculptures which were incredible. Brunch menu had a mix of savory and sweet and their pastry chef does not disappoint. Will definitely be back.
Sunday brunch began with gin/ champagne and ended with pressed coffee.
Seafood salad of tender sea morsels was light, refreshing and filling. Bread with herb cheese butter ... I’m still graving. Delightful Olive medley accompanied by some what boring cheese board plate ...warm and professional service
I came for the buffet which I heard was fantastic. The a la carte menus was OK and the food was fine. For the price, I will not return. A buffet would have given more value
Variety in menu. Delicious tench onion soup. Steak and frites it is ok. View form patio really appealing and relaxing.
Excellent day and having lunch at Rats was wonderful!
We were 6 persons in our party and it was our first experience. We expected the food to be outstanding and it was less than average. My burger was overcooked and tasteless. Someone's chicken salad was very plain. We loved the atmosphere and service but the food was very disappointing.
Old world charm. Personable staff & excellent food.
The food was very good. A little pricey for lunch.
Everything was great, except for a bit excessive wait for the main course.
Nick, our server, was very friendly, nice and helpful, food was wonderful. And they were accommodating by ‘adjusting our bill’.
We are frequent visitors to the GFS and Rat’s and will continue being big fans.
