There were not enough servers to handle the (small) crowd, the already small menu was out of one of the main courses, table next to us complained that the chicken and steak were both undercooked and had to be sent back. Manager was nice and accommodating. Experience was disappointing especially considering it was a holiday weekend.
Food was good...but your outdoor dinner area was horrible...I was bitten by fleas and or chiggers...last time you’ll see me
The food is very good. My only reservation was the service. It was not busy and our main course took 30 minutes to receive. Maybe they were having issues in the kitchen that evening, not sure...
Vacationing and looking for lobster roll. Beautiful outdoor dining area, excellent service and food priced reasonably for tourist spot near ferry crossing.
Overall a pleasant experience, a nice variety of food, reasonalbly priced and lovely outdoor setting. I had been reticent to return given prior years inconsistely, so I was positively surprised. If the level of service and food quality can continue, I would consider returning to Red Maple.
We loved the oysters and steamed littlenecks, especially the littleneck broth. Fish tacos, veggie burger and fluke were also all outstanding. Service was attentive and friendly.
Lovely outdoor setting with great service. The food was good, but the CT lobster roll was disappointing, with only a little more than half a hot dog bun of lobster meat that was a little chopped-up.
We love this Restaurant in SI. The carrots were raw with the chicken dish. The broth with the mussels was like water. The waitress was very slow with the orders. Overall the food is usually delicious .
This was the second time we ate at this restaurant and the last time. We both ordered salads which happened to be very good. We got our salads in approximately 15 minutes which was ok. I ordered a hamburger and my wife ordered fluke. We did not receive our main dishes for over 1.5 hours. The waitress never came over to the table to apologize when we finally got served. She also gave no reason for the delay nor did she ask how the food was. The fluke was dried out and the hamburger was ok. Definitely not worth the 1.5 hours wait.
After having eaten there two years ago we went expecting a good meal. Service slow, tables after us were served before us... Cuban meatball appetizer was cold inside not fully heated. Burger was okay but seafood special was served with over cooked shrimp, porridge like rice and wilted greens. It’s a shame that a restaurant in such a great location can’t manage a consistent identity. Perhaps they should concentrate on basic food prepared well and better trained servers
food was pretty good but the service was horrible. for the price, you should expect better than diner level wait staff. may give it a pass to see if it was due to growing pains but I definitely would not recommend to a friend anytime soon.
entrees were hit and miss, as were the appetizers. wine list was interesting (perhaps the high point).
I've been a summer resident since in utero half a century ago. Finding good dining on the island that has high quality food, good service, and is reasonably priced has often been a challenge. It's hard for restaurants to stay in business based on the summer economy. The Chequit has had its challenges in this department over the years, but it still has a leg up on most of the competition in my opinion and is under new ownership in recent times so if you have not been in a while keep that in mind. It's a pretty setting inside or out and the menu is small but varied. Our most recent experience, this past weekend, was that the food was good but the service a bit slow and inconsistent. But welcome to the island. You can pay twice as much for some other places, but for a reasonable fine dining experience, you will get solid to very good food and a nice atmosphere here. It can get loud, only real issue for me. If it is a nice day, sitting on the patio under the beautiful maple tree with partial water views and the lovely surroundings is a treat. If you like live music and want a lively crowd, they have a nice scene for that (esp. Saturday nights).
Beautiful outdoor dining.
Awful wine by the glass selection
They do not serve or offer a bread for purchase on their menu.
Descriptions of food not accurately represented on menu.
Server was very nice but unfamiliar with wine selection and menu.
Overall it was a pleasant experience
Most of the staff was very personable and charismatic, the food was great and live music was a perfect touch - the Oysters were incredible!
You ask me to leave a review. I had confirmed reservations for 7/24 . When my party of 4 arrived, the restaurant was closed. No notification of that on website or phone message. When i emailed restaurant the next day, i was told the restaurant closed unexpectedly that day. Kitchen help on the night of the 24 th said they were closed on the 23 rd too
In the reply email the next day, i was told that management would personally reschedule me. I chose not to take that chance
I had to check boxes to submit thus. I had no dining experience that night
One star is too high for this restaurant. I have had better airline food, much better. I just don't understand how they can cook and serve such dreadful food. Unseasoned, poorly cooked, ugly to look at and served at a pace that can only be described as painfully slow. They shouldn't bother.
Food is so-so but given we both had burgers it’s difficult to rate. They ran out of the fluke entree at 7:00 which leads me to believe they had little or none to begin with on Saturday. The fluke servche, which is made with frozen fluke, was mediocre at best. Pieces to thick and dressing had no flavor.
Our waiter was outstanding and saved the day with his great personality. Otherwise, not much to recommend this restaurant.
Rather disappointed. The place was less than 1/4 full but rarely saw the server. Fluke was dry and small and $32. Chicken came with a giant serving of orzo. Took ages to get apps and then even longer to get entrees
We had a casual Sunday brunch with 3 kids, which could have been a disaster, but luckily the staff was warm & friendly. The recent renovation was beautiful providing a relaxing setting and the food was solid. We would highly recommend!
good but not great. fair presentation. The risotto was cool (almost cold). DIdn't realize the chicken also came over a giant pile of another couscous-like grain (was on menu as summer vegetables). Waiter attentive but a bit overly personal. Still, nice space, food tasty, and overall very good
Very good food locally sourced. Very pleasant environment.
Charlie was a terrific server! So was the other guy at lunch on Sept 17, but We missed getting his name.
Don't go. Ever. It sucked. We waited over an hour for appetizers. We left. Don't go.
No. No. No. No.
Third or fourth dinner here. Love this place. Great food. Welcoming staff. Worth taking the ferry to Shelter Island.
We went on a Wednesday night, with a reservation. There seemed to be about 30 people sat. Although there were plenty of staff members, they were really in the weeds, and at times the entire staff was in the kitchen. Our curly haired waitress didn't check on our table at all, and we didn't get our beer until like 20 minutes sitting. Our apps took a very long time. The sausage flatbread was very good, the eggplant terrine was unappealing... it looked like it was cooked 30 minutes ago and just sat and it wasn't on corn "salsa." The burger was ok, the French fries were good. The steak was fatty but the roast potatoes were also good. The bus girl with the long ponytail was talking to the table next to us and totally bad mouthing her colleagues, place of work, and dishes. We shared the brownie Sunday which came on a shallow plate and didn't seem to be homemade. Toward the end of the night, the staff was busy resetting tables (which wouldn't be needed until tomorrow since it was 10:30) instead of attending to the guests. The grey haired host was pleasant and helpful.
Beautiful old school quaint spot with great food and views! We'll be back!
The food was sub par. The meatballs seemed frozen as did he calamari appetizer, not fresh made. The burger bun was slightly stale. Cocktails were very good.
For a meal out in the open it was great. The food was good, but not very good or exceptional. The price was in line with the value. And, of course, Shelter Island is beautiful and the weather was perfect.
My comments refer to summer dining only. The Red Maple is a great place to dine al fresco. The garden is beautiful and one can even see a slice of Dering Harbor from the top tier. The service is very good, attentive but not intrusive. I always order the roasted chicken with a side of roasted baby carrots. I am never disappointed. The oysters are not always local but have always been bgood as has the tuna tartare. The key lime parfait is also excellent. My biggest qualm is that the fish entrees are mostly misses. My husband ordered the striped bass on one visit and the portion was tiny, probably less than 6 oz. He asked for a larger portion and the kitchen sent back the same piece. We didn't argue. This time he ordered the Montauk fluke with lentils, caper berries and fresh tomatoes. The fish was dry and lacking in flavor. The accompaniments were not cohesive and the tomatoes looked like supermarket ones, pale and mealy. Surprising when at the end of July Long Island farm stands are bursting with fresh local tomatoes. When our server asked us how the entrees had been I said the chicken was great as usual (and the other 3 people in my party helped gobble it up) but the fish was a miss. She apologized but that was it. I feel bad writing this review but we've had two meals in the past month with similar disappointing entrees. I hope the restaurant reads this as constructive criticism. I know I'll go back but I will stick with the chicken:)
We had very creative dishes with an excellent ambiance. The staff was very helpful and pleasant to deal with.
Sat outside with friends and the ambiance is spot on. Food was good shared lots of apps which were all delicious. The desserts were definitely the highlight with the waffle Sunday and the salted caramel cream puffs. Service was attentive but there was a little bit of a language barrier while ordering and asking questions about the menu
Have been to Ref Maple in previous summers for a much better experience. Service was fine but food very expensive for only mediocre and skimpy portions
Very good food !!! Wonderful Service ... perfect spot for a date
Similar to other reviews, while the setting & ambience are lovely, the service was terrible. Once we got our drinks & appetizers, we were basically ignored for close to an hour. No water offered, no plates cleared & it took forever for our main course. I finally flagged down our server who looked shocked when I asked her to clear the appetizer plates & to update us on the status of our meal. Her solution to our frustration was to keep pushing more drinks on us (which of course would be on our own dime). The main course was mediocre for the prices charged although desserts were delicious. Newsflash - great service makes or breaks the customer's experience!!
I expected a lot more? Food was boring and overpriced
We had the cuban meatballs and arugula salad. Yum. Kids loved their chicken fingers :-)
Charlie, the manager and our bus boy Harry were terrific
Food was delicious, but it took forever to get served. The manager was apologetic and bought our group a round of drinks. I would give them another try.
One of the best dinners I've had recently. Food was simple but still creative. Every single dish was a standout. Relaxed atmosphere, pretty surroundings. Can't wait to return.
Such a different style from the old Chequit Inn dining and pub area so we need to get accustomed to it. Food was quite good but taps not working for beer and wine 🙄 But we will be back, assured that it will not happen again. The Red Maple was very accommodating to our toddler. Though he was quite well behaved.
Checked on the Inn itself upstairs and LOVED the decor ....... just beautiful.......
All in all, a nice Saturday dinner after watching the Ospreys play the Bucks.
