About

Award winning Red Onion is situated in the heart of Glasgow city centre. Chef/patron, John Quigley's roller coaster career started in London’s West End where he quickly established himself and gained a reputation for excellent casual gourmet dining. He then took the opportunity to travel the world as a private chef to rock stars and celebrities such as Bryan Adams, Tina Turner and Guns n Roses. It is a contemporary casual all day dining experience with a menu that offers something for everyone. The kitchen produces new interpretations of classic Scottish cookery, serving dishes that people know and love. Its environment is modern and comfortable and the service relaxed and informal with the bustling feel of your local neighbourhood bistro.

Went to this lovely restraunt for my graduation dinner. The food was delicious, the staff couldn't do more for you and there was a great choice on the menu. Would definitely eat here again.

Came to Red Onion for graduation dinner - for a Tuesday evening it was very busy, but food was amazing and atmosphere was great. Service was a good pace, never felt rushed and had everything we needed. 5/5 and a gold star!

I needed a place which could cater for myself as a vegan and my omnivore friends and this is the perfect place. They happily tucked into their cow and chicken and I was treated with haggis Bon Bons and gnocchi .
This is always my first choice for dining when my group has mixed dietary preferences.
Will be back again as soon as I get another excuse.

My Mum is gluten free and loved having such a selection of meals to chose from - especially desserts! My Dad was very happy with his dinner (braised beef). Service was excellent. staff very friendly and attentive and not overbearing at all. Felt the restaurant was bright, comfortable and very relaxing. We all enjoyed our evening there.

This restaurant was recommended to us by friends who live in Glasgow. It is a lovely relaxing place to eat, well laid out with a good atmosphere. However the staff were mostly disinterested apart from a male waiter who was very upbeat and cheerful.
The food was average at best and my wife`s risotto was especially disappointing. We were not the only diners who had issues with the food.I am sure some meals were very good but not the ones we had and this should not be the case in a quality establishment.

We all enjoyed a fabulous pre theatre meal. Staff were attentive and friendly. Even had a couple of words from John Quigley himself!!
The food was fabulous, generous portions and cooked to perfection. We were approx. £25 each for 3 courses including coffee & wine.
Will definitely be returning soon!!

Food was nice. Service was really slow although staff were really nice and friendly, they looked a little hot and stressed, which created a weird, uncomfortable atmosphere, I felt a bit awkward to ask for things.
We were asked if we wanted to look at the desert menu, I said yes, after 30 mins I realised they weren't coming back with the menu lol. I had to go down the stairs to get somebody's attention, at that point I asked for my bill. I don't think I will go back here.

so we went for lunch on Saturday but the whole experience was unremarkable. Onion soup was very poor and my softshell crab tempura was as much prawn tempura as it was crab but good!

Maria's risotto was very good she claimed and my roasted seafood pasta with lobster was essentially very good except they should forget the lobster. Tasting very much like half of one of these £4 frozen canadian supermarket jobs, even the claw meat was tasteless - not what you would expect from a great Scottish seafood lobster at all. Aside from that the dish was good.

Most of the time restaurants have a gluten free salad option or rather a limited range that never changes. Red onion have a separate G/Free menu that seems to change all the time and everything I have tried on the various visits here has been delicious. I had a roast chicken dish this time and frozen raspberries with hot white chocolate sauce YUM!

I opted for the vegan menu (even though I am a vegetarian) to see what the options were and I what a delight it was! So much so that one of my friends selected a starter from the vegan menu too. I had vegetable tempura which was really lovely, served with a couple of dipping sauces and a light salad. I followed this with the bean burger on ciabatta. I have to be honest and say while it was really tasty it was a little dry. The chips on the side were standard skinny chips, not the lovely hand cut chips that we all remembered from past visits. Back onto the main menu for the fabulous warm chocolate brownie and ice cream. The only downside I would say is that the wine is pretty expensive, even the house wine, and no water was offered. There only seemed to be two waiters on the evening we were there and given that it was pretty busy some extra staff wouldn't go a miss. That said, its a nice restaurant and it has a lovely warm atmosphere.

We had booked a table here on Thursday the 3rd of March for an evening meal .
We choose this restaurant because it had a gluten free menu for my wife
We arrived 30 mins early & they seated us straight away we were handed a menu & had to as for the gluten free menu
I ordered a burger & my wife ordered a duck dish when our food arrived the actual burger was missing along with the bacon
I had to go down stairs looking for staff when I found a waiter his reply was did you check for cameras .
After they reurned my food complete with burger this time the food was really nice
After we had finished our meal we asked for the bill to be given someone else's bill
Overall the restaurant is nice they just need to sort out the service & the staff

We were a table of 5 arrived for a booking at 7.45 pm last Friday day night
Waiting staff seemed distracted - took sometime to take the food order, forgot a starter , had to continually ask for jug of water, after finishing main course long wait to be asked if wanted to see the dessert menu- further 20 min wait for this to arrive then again to be asked what we wanted! We felt pretty neglected most of the night- staff seemed to be more interested in running up and downstairs with various boxes- not a great evening because of this and by no means our first time at the place- sorry but management need to address this and until you do we will not be back.

I love Red Onion because I'm vegan and they have a vegan menu and the staff show good appreciation and knowledge of vegan cooking and issues. I was pleased to see new options on the vegan menu this last time I visited.
The staff are always friendly and efficient and make dining at Red Onion a completely relaxed and enjoyable experience.

We had high hopes for our Valentine's Day meal out, as I'd heard good things about Red Onion. However, we were left disappointed. The host was quite blunt - no warm welcome at all, we felt like we had intruded. Once we had sat at our table, without anyone offering to take our coats, we waited 15 whole minutes before anyone came over to see us. We gave our drinks orders then, and we requested to see the vegetarian menu, which meant we were another 5 minutes browsing the menu before we could order. Again, service was slow before they returned to take our order. We got our starters 45 minutes after arriving (due to waiting staff I might add, not the kitchen), but after that each course arrived promptly. The food itself was lovely. The restaurant was absolutely freezing which also put a real dampener on the evening. I wouldn't return to this restaurant as the staff did not make us feel welcome, and the service standards were not up to scratch. A real shame as the food itself was fine.

This was my second time at this thought-to-be-nice restaurant. I was surprised by the fact that it was nothing as I remember from last time. In this special occasion I have been allocated in a table which not only it was not well illuminated but also had a column just behind one of the seats. After complaining we got changed to an even darker table for four people that was next to the stairs where people go up and down constantly. When we finally ordered we discovered that the only menu available at that time was the Vegan menu although I specified I wanted the Pre Theatre one in my reservation and my reservation was confirmed. Either it is an automatic reply or someone does not check the requests made by the customers. I was not delighted by the scarcity of options but I went for the menu just to try something different. The food quality was reasonable, however the quantity was far from okay. Big plates by not so much to eat in them. Lastly, the time to pay the bill came. To my surprise we got charged an incredible amount of money for such a normal dinner (3 course meal). I am very certain that I am not going to come back again. I am also deeply disappointed with the service as they barely interacted with the customers apart from asking, is it okay? So, as an overall I do hope that the rest of the customers were satisfied because this ones were not. Thank you for reading.

Enjoyed a good meal. Table comfortable and service was fine but not exceptional. We were surprised only had small glasses for red wine and very thin paper napkins. Not what we expected or remembered from red onion. Hadn't been in a while. Going back again soon so would still recommend.

I had lunch at the Red Onion for the first time last week, after hearing excellent reports about it from friends. As a vegan, it is important to me that I can eat good food with non-vegan friends, and it is rare to find a restaurant that offers a fantastic range of vegan options as well as delicious food for 'omnis'. The portions were sizeable, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the restaurant itself is a lovely place to eat. We were all impressed, and will most certainly return.

I booked online before I arrived in Glasgow and did not regret it. The restaurant was very comfortable and the staff friendly. I had the 3-course pre-theatre set menu for less than £20, great value. Chicken parfait with oatcakes, smoked haddock fishcake and fruit crumble. Yummo! Lovely choice of drinks too. I live a long way away but wish I could go back again soon....
