South Sands Hotel Restaurant
Great food, excellent attentive staff, can’t fault it....
Stopped over for an anniversary and were expecting good things as we'd had good recommendations from friends. The restaurant and food was as good as we'd been told. Noticed especially was how great the staff were.
An anniversary experience worth repeating!!
The service was hilariously bad.
The waiting staff are obviously not trained very well. However, they were delightful people and did their best.
The food was good and obviously the view was fantastic.
Maybe they should have the window cleaner clean the windows in the morning rather in the middle of lunch, he didn’t have a delightful mid drift and we would have rather seen the great view.
Goodness knows how they cope when the restaurant is full.
Go to this place, it’s great, we had a ball but please don’t expect Claridges service, more like Faulty Towers.
Enjoyable Birthday evening. Service was not as good as it should have been for the prices. Slow especially on arrival. Lovely views and food was good.
Returning to South Sands after quite a long time (years rather than months) it was good to find that the good things we remembered are still firing on all cylinders - location, ambiance, food and wine. Definitely worth a visit.
My only negative comment would be that a couple brought their dog into the dining room and it was sat on a seat next to them. I personally dislike dogs in restaurants and whilst it did not bark or cause a nuisance I just do not feel it appropriate for dogs to be admitted.
Have been many times which in itself, says a lot!
The weather was perfect for having lunch outside on the terraced deck
Sun shining and sea calm
Lobsters in Season
Not too busy for a Sunday lunch time
Food & service were good and easy parking
What more could One want...
A great Sunday lunch out in a great spot with perfect weather
Very enjoyable indeed ...Thank You!
Only one vegetarian option on menu , felt like I had stepped back 30 yrs , can’t remember last time I visited a restaurant where I didn’t get a choice and increasingly more now also have vegan choices
We were staying at South sands and regretted not eating there on a previous stay so booked a table. The food was very pricey for the quality and amount. Afraid we didn’t think it lived up to our expectations which was disappointing as as a hotel guest breakfast and afternoon tea is excellent. We won’t be eating there on our next stay.
Superb location, the restaurant is quite noisy, varied menu, very nice staff.
Lovely setting and decor. Food ok but very expensive and service poor.
Lovely position. Friendly staff. Food was really good and portions not too large or small. Lovely birthday surprise for my husband - a plate of macaroons with happy birthday written in chocolate. Good selection of food on menu for all tastes. Only downside was bill was incorrect - charged twice for drinks - but this was quickly put right. Will be back.
Fresh and delicious food with great service from friendly staff
I chose the South Sands restaurant, having dined there before on a number of occasions, as a lovely spot to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary - good food and nice surroundings with a wonderful view was the objective.
We decided not to have a starter but ordered some drinks to have whilst waiting for the main course. However, after a long wait I queried with the waiter where our drinks had got to and he responded that they were on there way but when pressed he said the bar was very busy. At this point the restaurant was no more than 25% full - not massively busy! After a further extended wait I got up in frustration and went to the bar, to find our drinks sitting on a tray waiting to be collected & the bar staff busy in conversation with occupants of the bar. I claimed our drinks and returned to our table to find our main course being served!
My wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicory on polenta however my halibut looked & tasted as though it had dried out under lights - a great shame for such a magnificent fish.
The trifle that followed was a fashionable “deconstruction” consisting of a block of over gelatined custard and jelly, a blackberry, 2 raspberries with a coulis coating and a dollop of cream covered with a sprinkle of crumb. Presentation appeared to be the priority with this sweet.
I took a party of ten to this restaurant last year for lunch and it was fabulous, however, on this occasion it sadly fell short. The food could have been better but most notably there was a lack of service from one particular waiter.
Consistently lovely restaurant for lunch with a group of all ages - kids menu particularly popular! Only gripe was that mussels are not served in pots any more!
This restaurant is perfect for a dinner in South Sand, south Devon. The views are amazing with the wonderful food and excellent service.
The ambiance is excellent with views of the beach and estuary. The meal was very good, though a little slow in arriving, for which they apologised, and as it was a Sunday they ere probably very busy. We didn’t mind he wait as there was plenty going on on the beach for us to watch while chatting. We have been a few times and will be going again. Recommended.
Fresh fish cooked and served at it’s best . A most enjoyable evening , fabulous table over looking the beach .Visited many times never disappoints!
Had insects on my strawberry desert to be told they wouldn’t harm me didn’t bother in the end. Not a very varied menu all very rich need some more basic food on menu also overpriced
Did not notice when paying bill gratuity was already charged, although I noticed when home on the bill it is discretionary. (Who would be bold enough remove it at this point is questionable) However there was also a tip plate at the point of paying. A suggestion of a gratuity would be a more acceptable when settling the bill. I wonder if the staff get any of the gratuity as it seems odd to add an additional plate for any further contributions!!! which we ladies did.
No problems in tipping staff they work hard for their pay but needed to point this out.
Our starter was enjoyable but the hazelnuts were forgotten and the goats cheese was minimal. Not good value for money although we enjoyed the ambience of the dining area.
Dress code as advised on booking was really not needed as anything seemed to be acceptable on a hot day!! We ladies are always dressed appropriately.
Good fish, nice views outside. Not the cheapest meal to be had in Salcombe but the location is worth it
We first ate here over 18 years ago, we love the setting and was disappointed when it closed for a while over the years. However it’s open and with different management it is still as impressive, excellent service and food!!
Took my sister and her fiance for a special dinner as they’d just got engaged. Expected great food and service but was completely disappointed. Service was appalling - we didn’t get our first round of drinks until 50 minutes into the meal. Terrible communication by the staff. Food was ok but for 50 quid a head for starter and desert it was terrible value for money. Will not be returning.
Great location overlooking the bay. Interesting design to hotel and dinning room decor. Good quality food but very small portion sizes. Top end pricing but not Michelin standard.
An idyllic setting overlooking the South Cove bay. Great seafood and very attentive service. Worth a nice walk from Salcombe at any time of day and probably the best restaurant in the area. Given the type of summer customer they have in town the prices are to match (£70 for a full lobster!) but for an occasion it is hard to beat
we found the staff very friendly and helpful where nothing was too much trouble for them.
The food was great and really tasty and enjoyable.
A great all round experience
We ate of the 3 course for £43, both starters were really small and lacked punch, the Scallops were nicely cooked but under seasoned. The Gurnard was nicely seasoned but the garnish was lacking in flavour, the pickled cauliflower wasn't pickled and the cauliflower couscous was bland.
The mains were a good size but my Lamb rump was overcooked and the rest of dish lacked seasoning. The Mushroom wellington was good and both the white choc mousse and cheese board were nice.
Overall great presentation but let down by simple seasoning issue and cooking of the meat, which at a 2 rosette restaurant you expect better.
Service was good, waitress very friendly and helpful.
Average food very expensive great location right on beach.
Fabulous food, service and views. Excellent menu choices.
My husband had the crab claws as a starter and it was delicious. The goats cheese panecotta lacked some flavour but was well presented. we both enjoyed the delicious duck breast cooked perfectly
Sadly, we felt rushed and the portions sizes were not great for an evening meal out when you purposely haven’t eaten to save yourself for a supposed dining treat.
Having been seated between to a very lively table of 22 and a barking dog, my date was some what ruined.
Shan't bother again.
we were offered the set lunch menu, not over imaginative, expensive with very little fish.
It took a long time to be told there was also a bar menu, this was better but expensive.
We were told the crab salad was large by the waiter but it was small and the crab was already
mixed with mayonnaise. We were a party of 6 and we were all disappointed.
The waiter was new but should not have been serving until he had been better trained.
One drink was completely forgotten by the waitress who took the order.
Our daughter and three of her friends also had lunch on the same day and were very
disappointed, this is such a shame as the location is great.
The restaurant was pretty empty, it was a bank holiday, so perhaps word has spread that
South Sands is not value for money.
The view from the restaurant was superb. We did not feel welcomed as a family. The food was very average but pricey. We do not expect dry burgers, hard burger baps, 1 sausage for £9 (kids meal) for the prices charged. The barman tried charging us for an additional £6 drink, which we did not have. Overall, we have eaten at plenty of pricey establishments but would not return to SS, despite its beautiful setting.
Great food and nice atmosphere - we were just a bit smoked out by the log fire!
Excellent Birthdsy lunch right on the beach
We had a nice dinner at South Sands though ambience somewhat hampered by the over lit dining room. Service and quality of food was ok.
Eight of us ate at the Hotel on Saturday night as part of my wife Mary's 60th birthday celebrations. It was a stylish and enjoyable experience and we thought the Restaurant was very professionally run. The portion sizes are now about right and the menu very varied. I chose the crab cake and then a rather unusual choice- a mini steak suet pudding, both of which were delicious. The tomatoey "amuse- bouche" and provision of a slice of special bread with spicy butter were a good idea. Others enjoyed their fish and duck mains. Everyone enjoyed their desserts which were very well presented and delicious. The South Sands have gone for the idea of a South Sands House wine at £23.50 for red, rose and white and that helped to keep the cost containable; we liked the Rose and White one particularly. I think the prices need to stay as they are for the foreseeable future to keep your growing customer base on board!
The food was good, but not as good as I’ve had there in the past. Also over priced for what you actually get on your plate.
The dessert menu was a big let down, definitely need to bring Cheese cakes back to the menu they were stunning every time I’ve had one before. How ever the staff were lovely, and the hotel and views are simply beautiful as always. Undecided if we will be returning any time soon.
I have never been disappointed with this hotel! You are greeted by a warm and pleasant atmosphere in a very well decorated venue where a high class of food and service is given without being pretentious. Always so welcoming and friendly and for me in particular I cannot thank the staff enough for always going above and beyond to cater for my long list of food intolerances even developing an individual menu for myself. It is well worth a visit and if you can a stay! I would recommend this venue to everyone and wish I lived closer so could come more often. The manager and staff should be proud of the service provided!
