Great Italian restaurant from the Comparison and Soda to the excellent food. Nicely dressed Caesar salad, linguine with seafood and tasty chicken limoncello rounded out dinner. A very nice Italian Cabernet accompanied dinner. Gelato and good, strong coffee finished the meal. Service was attentive, but not over powering. A great place for a very good meal.

I'll start with the good. Our hostess was amazing. She was polite, attentive, and responsive. The restaurant is immaculate with great ambiance and decor. Also. The price point is great for a casual night out. That's as complimentary as I can be. When my girlfriend and I arrived for dinner on a Wednesday night, there was one other couple in the restaurant. That's it! The hostess sat us and introduced the server who was standing idly by. It was a full 10 minutes before our order was taken, ten minutes after that before bread and our appetizer arrived together, and twenty minutes or so before entrees were served. It seemed that they were lightly staffed. We only saw three people... We ordered the calamari. It came with shrimp. That was an unexpected but nice addition. The shrimp were the best part of the dish. The calamari wasn't fresh, was overcooked and chewy. I suspect it also upset my stomach. As I write this review, some 18 hours later, I cannot stay out of the bathroom. I ordered the cacio e pepe and my girlfriend ordered the rigatoni. We were both underwhelmed by the dishes. Both (we tasted each other's) were incredibly bland. They were beautifully presented but that was the best part of the meal. We decided to share a Panna Cotta for dessert. As a first for me, it was drizzled with caramel and dressed with fresh fruit. The fruit was a nice touch. We ate about half of it and then waited 10-15 minutes before we were able to ask for the bill. Not a big deal except that by this point, there were a total of three tables sat...

Came across Gioia while exploring places to eat during a long weekend trip to Chicago. Other reviews raved about the table service pasta which was an immediate draw for our party. Upon entering, we were noticed by the only two staff present and ignored for 10+ minutes. Other than a large party, there were only three other small tables seated on what we expected to be a busy Friday evening. The online menu showed two table service pastas, but only one was available and it was very underwhelming. It was a pitifully disappointing $125 of mediocre pasta, sparse service, and undeserved pretention.

They were not serving liquor so only beer and wine. Had two people one hostess and one waiter running the whole restaurant but needless to say there were only about 5 tables with people. The hostess was fabulous and they did their best. Food was very good! Menu was very limited but was not disappointed

No staff. Only one waitress and it was chaotic. Inhumane to see only one waitress and she’s pregnant with an enormous amount of workload. Where’s the owner (s)? Never will go back to dine there. I don’t support those working conditions

About 30 minutes before our reservation, we received a call telling us that no cocktails would be served that evening. We thought that was strange, but since we are not big drinkers, anyway, it was fine although no accommodations were given. They were obviously having a staffing problem since there was only one server for the entire restaurant. Although she was lovely, there was no way that she could possibly properly serve an entire restaurant of people. The bus boy brought a huge box of tea to the table and then left it there! Our entrees were served at all different times… In summary, food was delicious, ambience was nice, but service was horrible and we sat in the restaurant for over three hours.

We love this place! Great great food, wonderful ambiance, especially when they put their outside tables up. But the service; yikes. It was really off. The entire time (Saturday evening) they had ONE waiter and ONE hostess/manager to take care of the entire restaurant. When the bar got full, we lost our waiter - never to be seen again. The hostess/manager did her best. But it really really would have helped to have some acknowledgment that they were short or at least an apology. She dropped off our check sheepishly, didn't say thanks, and tiptoes away, full realizing what a distinct terrible service experience she was dealing with.
