The Cleveland Tontine Ratings and Reviews
We were a party of 4 for Birthday lunch treat for my father-in-law. This was his & mum-in-laws first visit to The Tontine and before the end of our meal they both agreed they would be happy for a return visit.
Service was excellent and food was wonderful, dad and the rest of our part thoroughly enjoyed our choices off the menu of the day.
It's not very often me and the Mrs get chance to go out (kiddies) and we found the setting nice and relaxing and the food was outstanding. We already knew the food was abit more expensive but was definitely worth the extra. We will be returning customers from now on 😀
The improvements in layout and decor made for a more pleasant dining experience and nice to see the place full and buzzing on a Sunday lunchtime. The food was excellent and beautifully presented although for those with larger appetites it may be a little minimalist; it's not often I can manage three courses!
Apparently further developments are being planned so will watch with interest but will definitely be back
Booked for Sunday lunch after dining at several other restaurants , I am happy to say this was the most enjoyable. The Staff were wonderful and the food was excellent. I would also like to comment on afternoon tea which is also the best in the area. I can definately recommend The Tontine and I will return again and again.
Nice lunch time menu. Ordered cocktails to start, and wine to be served with our meal, but the cocktails took a while to come, they had only just arrived when we were taken to our table and the food was promptly served. So we drank the cocktails with the first course, which wasn't quite what we had planned. Apart from that, very enjoyable experience, great food well presented, with pleasant waitress. Would recommend.
I booked a table at the Cleveland Tontine for 13 June 2017 to have lunch with my daughter and my granddaughter who was home from University. In order to get together, my daughter and granddaughter travelled from Newcastle and I travelled from Driffield in East Yorkshire. We all agreed that the Cleveland Tontine was well worth the trip! We had a wonderful lunch in an attractive and relaxed setting. The food was delicious and the servers couldn't have been more polite or helpful. Without hesitation we'll be making future visits. When we saw the cocktail menu, were only sorry that we weren't booked in for an overnight stay! Thank you all very much!
We had a delicious meal at the tontine for my mums birthday! The six of us were all in agreement that the food was outstanding in particular the puddings!! I could have had 3 courses of just desserts! We were served by lovely, friendly staff who were very attentive! We will be back and very soon!!
Our Sunday Lunch was even better than the last time we dined at the Tontine. First Class ! Can only recommend - Yorkshire Puddings huge ! Varied and seasonal menu. Loved the Rhubarb and Tonka bean Trifle. Lovely atmosphere, staff friendly, attentive and efficient. If only we could come every week....
Walked in to a friendly welcome, given a choice to be seated at our booked table or drink at the bar to relax, shown to the bar and given a history of the building.
Friendly bar staff, great waiters/waitresses, amazing food even Alacart you would think small portions, but no, they were very generous portions.
I took my wife there for her birthday and I'd 110% go back..
We have not visited the Tontine for some time but were delighted to find it has not changed despite some renovations. The welcome by the staff was excellent and child friendly. The ambience is great and decor appropriate. The food is as good as ever and beautifully presented. Overall a memorable evening.
Great food. Welcome and service was first class. Complimentary discount voucher was a pleasant surprise. Staff extremely attentive and good humoured.
Only disappointment was being seated too close to another two tables adjacent to the bistro bar. It meant any conversations were easily overheard and spoilt any discreet discussion.
Will return, thankyou.
Every time we visit the Tontine it just seems to get better. Staff are very friendly and we were served swiftly and with no bother. the food was spectacular and again, just keeps improving from visit to visit. There was a minor error with our main course but we wouldn't have even noticed unless we'd been told and it was handled in a way that even the grumpiest customer (which we were not!) couldn't have shown annoyance. Love it there and will be back again, and again, and again!
Came here for my birthday and we hadn't been for about 6 years.. place hadn't changed.. very cosy and staff were brilliant ... food was gorgeous and really good value for money... would definitely return.... only downside... there was a wedding on upstairs and the music could be heard in the Bistro which was a bit annoying
We went here for a friends'Christmas lunch and chose from the set menu. The food was excellent: the turkey and vegetables some of the best I've had in this season of mass-produced meals. My desert - dark chocolate tart - was one of the best desserts I've had in months! Service was attentive but discreet - all in all, very, very good.
We stayed at The Tontine before christmas and had a fantastic meal in the restaurant. We started with the King Scallops, and shared the chateaubriand which was exceptional. Very good quality meat indeed served with a selection of sides. The alcohol wasn't cheap, but we had some very pleasant cocktails and paired a nice baby Margaux. We will definitely be back
Excellent food and really good service. We were a party of six having a family celebration and picked the Cleveland Tontine in part because of its convenient location. We were all really impressed with the gourmet food. There was a wide choice of both food dishes and drinks and not overly priced for such good quality. I'd eat here again.
Arrived for Menu du Jour for two friends for lunch. Our waitresses very pleasant, helpful and efficient. Starters we chose Duo of Salmon and Pea and Leek soup both tasty and reasonable size portions. Mains we chose Chicken with celeriac and Sea Trout but asked for chips instead of potato they were all delicious. We asked for cafetiere for two got a large one which served us both several cups. Will definitely be going again and would recommend.
This was the first time we have stayed at the Cleveland Tontine, and also used the Restaurant. I can only describe the accommodation and restaurant as first class. It was a very pleasant stay and a fabulous dining experience for me and my wife.
And of course, we will be returning soo.
Went to celebrate birthdays and had a lovely evening. All had the early bird menu which was excellent and good value for money. Great scallops and retro prawn cocktail. Fish pie very nice and steak cooked to perfection. Lovely atmosphere in this old inn with log fires and hidden nooks and crannies . Service was very attentive without being intrusive and we were very pleasantly surprised to receive complimentary glasses of fizz for the two with birthdays. We enjoyed being able to have conversation without having to shout . Great for celebrating or for a quiet dinner for two. We will be back.
Excellent meal and the service was superb. We will be back. The prawn starter needs the tempura batter to be a little less heavy but still tasted good. The venison was excellent as was the cod. We shared a pancake desert which was lovely. We had fizzy water and one of us had two drinks. £85 the log and a very nice ambience despite it being a Monday night! 5 other sets of diners there wi us including a group of 7.
Me and my partner arrived for Sunday lunch we were greeted very well and were shown to our table, the waitress that served myself and my partner was fantastic and professional, the ambience was great we got talking to the table next to us,
The starter was lovely I had the scallops and my partner had the scotch egg, lovely flavours and they complimented each other, the main course was nice but the veg in my opinion war raw, there's cook with a nice crunch and there was raw, I think it was one of the restaurant managers that cleared the mains and I just said politely it was lovely but the veg was slightly undercooked, she pulled a face at myself and said it's what people want and like it like that. I said that's fine and we ordered desserts.
As the desserts came she placed them down and made quite a rude remark "let's hope you like this course", i just thought that it was quite rude. I won't be going back and it is a shame really.
