We enjoyed our evening here very much the staff were all lovely and friendly and made us feel very welcome and when I wasn't overwhelmed with my vegan meal they were apologetic and took the price of the meal off our bill. The food however was well presented and maybe if we ordered a different meal we would of really liked it . Would be great to have more vegan choices but they did try their best to offer me different ways they could amend some of the dishes to suit me. We however really enjoyed our eve n would go back and stay at this hotel .
It was a date night for me and my partner, the staff were wonderful and made our evening very special
This restaurant space has had a makeover since we last came. It’s an improvement, less formal with some attractive area partitions.
The food is still good, but it used to be excellent- I’ve had a couple of memorable lunches here in the past.
The service was friendly and polite but we waited 35 mins between starter and main.
Prices are high for what this restaurant now offers in terms of quality which on this occasion was sadly not what it used to be.
Attentive staff and fantastic tasty food. All cooked really well. Presentation was outstanding. Price reflects the quality of the food.
Only downside for me was the wine was overpriced in my opinion.
We went for our first Fish Friday for a little while. There were lots of new and delicious offerings in the buffet starter, while the new Papardelle seafood main was superb. The wine list provided us with an excellent Muscat/Voignier.
Seating wasn’t very comfortable. Service a little haphazard. Bar service excellent
My husband & I booked the restaurant on line as a treat for my birthday. The service was absolutely outstanding & the food amazing. It was expensive though, but a good experience for a treat or special occasion.
As this was a Birthday for an 87th year old, the table had been specially decorated with some glitter and stars, the menu was small but the specials included whole poached trout (Rainbow by the looks of them). Deserts came with a board saying "Happy Birthday" in a variety of languages. Bill was reasonable for 3 people with drinks coming in at just over £25 per head. Having lunch was quieter that during the evening especially when other social events are on.
Had an amazing lunch with my mum for her birthday. Great service and lovely food as usual. Oh and loved the Bellini cocktails.. Can’t remember the waiters name but he was charming.. Table 40 12.30 booking Tuesday 9th October.. We will return
Felt the childrens menu was very expensive and the choice wasn't great.
Food good, but the service was very bad, I was so disappointed how slow and inattentive the staff were even though the sommelier was present. If the staff are training then this menu should be priced accordingly.
Another point was the seafood buffet is not replenished - so when we were seated there was no soup left and some of the starters were semi emptied which didn’t look too good.
Overall I’m not sure I would recommend. I am booked in for Christmas Day and really do hope they get the service sorted out beforehand I don’t Want to be disappointed again especially on a special day.
Went on special Fish Friday. Excellent food. Service was very polite and friendly and seating very comfortable. On this occasion noise level was higher than usual because of a couple of dining groups with loud chat, but overall this was a pleasant experience again Must come again.
We have stayed and dined at Wivenhoe on a number of occasions and it has never been less than excellent, but we have never submitted a review as you always wonder can it be consistently that good? After our fifth visit the answer is a resounding yes. The quality of food is excellent, cooked perfectly, and the atmosphere good. Not too quiet but quiet enough to feel you are not being overheard - and no noisy children! The service is extremely friendly but not fawning, very genuine. Overall when compared to similar places the cost is extremely reasonable for what you get. Can’t wait to return. Oh, and the setting is beautiful. North Essex is a bit of a revalation.
Good venue, pleasant surroundings. Pleasant helpful staff. Adequate parking facilities. Will be returning for future occasions.
Very attentive staff. Friendly warm atmosphere and grest food.
I had two 'specials' apple and celeriac soup and salmon with rice. The soup tasted predominantly of stock, not the delicate flavours of apple and celeriac. The rice was tasteless and the salmon overcooked. My partner had fish and chips with grilled fish. The chips were good but again the fish was overcooked and dry.
Very good dining experience and knowledgeable and friendly staff in pleasant setting.
Would go again and would recommend
Family meal for my mum's 75th. Mussels were overcooked and with many broken shells - meaning a lot of sharp shrapnel in them. We mentioned this to the waiter but got no feedback from anyone so assume he didn't pass it on.
Waiter didn't know the menu - this is basic service skill.
Desserts were superb as was the roast - everything else was so-so and nothing special.
Very nice meal with friendly staff. The meat eaters in our party had plenty of choice though limited for myself being vegetarian.
Our first time here despite only living 1 mile away. We came here as part of our 23rd wedding anniversary on sunday 5th August 2018. We had drinks at the bar before sitting down to the three course menu and a bottle of wine between two. The service was impeccable and the food was first class (although the roast beef was too fatty for my wife and she left half of hers). The staff were extremely attentive and made us feel very welcome (I understand this is a training venue for the university). The costs were reasonable for a place of this class. We will definately be back and probably as a larger group with family and friends next time.
A little gem that needs more promoting to realise the full potential. Thank you all for making our anniversary a little bit more special.
Poor service, totally forgot about us the whole evening as they were busy with a wedding.
Plates stacked up besides us from other tables, the table behind was full of empty glasses.
Food was late and took 3 attempts at getting the staffs attention
Food was good when it finally came, been here over 6 times with no problems before
Poor show Wivenhoe House
We went for the Fish Friday, and had a lovely meal. The staff were attentive, the meal was very good and well worth the money.
Very nice atmosphere, polite and helpful staff. Could have had another vegetarian option on the Sunday lunch menu. Food very tasty though.
Excellent friendly and efficient service. Food presented to a very high standard with a good choice.
Service was professional, welcoming and friendly.
Food was very good. Staff had no problem accomodating a different choice of omelette rather than the one on the menu - thank you for that.
Restaurant clean, tidy and seating arrangements perfect.
Will book again!
Had a fantastic meal for a 60th birthday. Staff were lovely and went above and beyond to make the evening special.
Lovely setting for our daughter’s graduation celebration lunch. Good food and wine list, great attentive service and excellent value.
Food was lovely but the service was extremely slow.
A lot of staff walking backwards and forwards across restaurant but not very attentive
Shame as otherwise very good
The Brasserie at Wivenhoe house is always exceptional. The food is delicious and well prepared. Such attention to detail both with the food and from staff is unusual these days. We would always choose it for a special occasion even though it is a little more expensive. Beautiful old building, quiet and sophisticated. Dining at its best.
Great meal. Quite expensive for what it is though. Definitely will come back though. Staff very friendly.
Very nice restaurant and bar area with a good atmosphere. Modern, fresh décor and very polite and friendly staff. Food was very good.
Outside area was extremely pleasant and the grounds lovely.
Had a quick look at the function room as passing through and looked ideal for a large function or sectioned off for small parties or conferences.
The food was well below normal expectations. The steak and venison burger was very tough and my colleague had the battered fish and said it was OK but mot great. Service great. Great venue. Food is normally much better.
Excellent sunday lunch and nice to sit outside for a drink
Excellent food as usual. Impeccable service. Would recommend.
My wife and I have been dining at The Brasserie at Wivenhoe Hotel since it opened. The whole experience of dining here is excellent due to the management of the staff who are in training.
The students who work in the Hotel have a vested interest in ensuring the dining experience is as good as they can make it.
I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes good food, good service and polite and attentive staff.
Staff were on average good, but the food left a lot to be desired.
French onion soup was the worst I have ever tasted. The steak was not cooked as I requested and was sent back and I waited 5/10 minutes for a replacement, which meant that my guests had almost finished their meal by the time mine arrived . As you can gather we will not be going back.
Excellent service & food. Presentation 1st Class. Ambience and surroundings Fabulous especially on such a lovely sunny warm day. Good value for money. Our friends were so impressed they want to go again and bring friends and family.
PLEASE PASS ON OUR SINCERE APPRECIATION TO ALL STAFF CONCERNED.
Will be back again very soon.
Lionel is a personality!
Booked again on spec yesterday, and arrived at the somewhat confusing uni campus but found my way with good signposting.
I last visited this building 30 years ago for a training conference, wow has it changed.
Walking through the building signage to the restaurant could have been a little bigger.
The restaurant itself is partly a training environment for students, and my traineee was very sweet if a tiny bit quiet.
The menu is separate from the main menu and is Lionels own creation reflecting his past.
The waiter had a few gaps in his knowledge (trainer not trainee) but he was very good obtaining the info.
The amuse bouche was a delicious mushroom aranchini.
Starter was a smoked chicken and ham hock terrine. Quite chunky but very nice, could have done with a bit more dressing as the toast was Melba like so all a bit dry.
Then came a palate cleanser of a lemon sorbet with lime vodka. Very nice bit moreish.
The main was a whole trout, I love trout but couldn’t remember why I hadn’t had it in ages, then it arrived and wow lots of filleting to do. No choking so bonus there. The fish was gorgeous the butter sauce just buttery. The potatoes were odd, tiny bullet shaped and crunchy, quite odd by nice.
Then came a strawberry cocktail as a pre dessert.
The dessert itself were profiteroles, well made nicely creamed but a cold sauce would have been a little nicer with heated sauce.
Overall a lovely experience and venue lots of bonuses to the experience and a good feeling that you are involved in training.
Lionel does like to check up n you to see that you are enjoying the meal.
Nothing special about the food and expensive for what it was.
My friend and I both had the Dingley Dell Pork rib eye. It was disappointing. The meat was chewy and a little fatty. Not as good as I've come to expect from the Brassier. Will come again but will avoid the pork. Also, the dessert was not good value for money. Very small.
