Food was excellent have no idea why this place is not busier maybe it's the location but every dish from starter through to dessert was exceptional.
It all started so well. Nice welcome. Attentive staff. Pleasant surroundings. But given we had reserved 2 days earlier through open table, it was not quite so nice to have been seated right by the kitchen lift.
Interesting menu. Good – if somewhat over-priced – wine list. The starters were very good – the crab sausage roll and Tunworth were particularly delightful.
There were 4 of us – one ordered the cod (nice), another the chickpea fritter (good) and 2 shared the rib of beef. All four dishes arrived at the same time. The cod and fritter were fine. The 2 beefs were cold. It was obvious that they had been sitting on the side in the kitchen for too long. We sent them back with a cautionary word about not microwaving them. They arrived back in less than 5 minutes having not been microwaved but clearly stuffed under a max grill. The plates were beyond safety and the food was tasteless.
The staff was appropriately apologetic - and the manager deducted the 2 beefs from our final bill and offered drinks on the house.
Given other reviews here, this might have been an isolated incident of poor kitchen management. But for a bill of £160 (not including service) with just 1 bottle of wine, two courses each and minus the beef, you expect a top rate experience. I’m not sure any of us would chance it again.

It was a very quiet Good Friday evening and so it was a shame the ambiance wasn't a bit more buzzy.
Great service and food. Unexpected find in Chinatown :) Would highly recommend for those looking for place to eat before watching Book of Mormon
Four of us thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday evening at Morden & Lea. We were in the first floor main dining room (we hadn't specified - there's a more casually styled ground floor, though I think the menu is the same ) which is a large L-shaped room, almost entirely given over to smart and comfortable booth-style seating, on banquettes round 3 sides of a rectangular table. Perfect for 4 but several couples had them too. The layout means there is plenty of room between tables and overall the space is quite classy although it lacked a tiny bit of atmosphere just because it was never more than half full. It deserves to be a lot busier as the service was friendly and helpful, the menu has some ambition and interest and the food is good!
We all had 3 courses and between us a lot of different dishes. All of it was good and some things quite memorable - in starters my grilled mackerel with polenta chips & bacon jam was very good and the tagliatelle of slow cooked venison got rave reviews; the main course of pork belly was especially praised and the skill and interest continued to the desserts. So often restaurants have a weaker range of desserts, they seem to run out of ideas, but here the quality continued. Plus there are good cocktails - and how often does a restaurant offer a mead? I thought it might be sweet and cloying but it was actually light and refreshing - as a non-wine lover I appreciate some thought and effort beyond the wine list.
So, lots to enjoy here and we all agreed we'd be back.
Despite the reviews I had low expectations when I booked: tourist area, China town, no competition and I was wrong. The food was of beautifully plated, exquisitely cooked with real delicacy. I had fillet of cod with buckwheat pancakes and watercress and citrus beurre blanc... I just stopped myself from licking the plate followed by a hazelnut and polenta cake with poached rhubarb. For a gluten avoiding person this was heaven. Coming back for Mother's Day Lunch. ..8 days later. That is a recommendation
Had valentines meal. Service was very friendly and food was different and enjoyable.
It was a pre-theatre meal but will definitely come back for another meal without the time constraints. Food was great, recommendations perfect and service was attentive. Have already recommended to friends but would recommend to all.
An absolute treat, not cheap but very fairly priced for really good quality food
Went here pre-theatre, and were the only people in there (5pm on the first Tuesday after New Year!). The food is excellent - creative starters, great beef, and good prices. The service, however, was extremely slow. It took over ninety minutes for three courses, despite only one other table walking in while we were there. Would definitely go back though.
Nice looking restaurant especially the upstairs space, the spacious comfortable booths are ideal for group bookings, the service was attentive, friendly and jovial; each member of our party had a different starter and main, and all thoroughly enjoyed their choices! Their wasn't much of atmosphere, the downstairs space was empty when we entered (7pm), the upstairs restaurant didn't seem to be quite 50% full while we were there, we were the last to leave at 9.30; however I understand that this is still a relatively new restaurant so it will no doubt pick up over time, if the atmosphere is not an essential factor for you, I would recommend it for the food and service. The food seems reasonably priced, the wine is priced as you would expect in a west end restaurant (two bottles equated to a third of the total bill). Overall Thumbs up!
Fab location for a pre theatre supper. Staff were attentive , friendly and helpful.
Good menu, not complicated, but did not have any prices next to the dishes. 4 of us in the party, and we all chose well, especially the pheasant which is an unusual option. Portion size good, as the food was quite rich.
Bill a bit pricey, but location, interior, food and wine reflected this.
Would definitely recommended, and will go there again.
We had little expectation on visting this restaurant as it was one of the only one that had free tables for a pre theatre meal on a thursday. However we did not walk out with an inch of disappointment. The food was incredible with fantastic array of desserts leaving us with a sense of moreishnous without being overly stuffed. The service was attentive and welcoming. The only downside I guess is from the lack of atmosphere from the many empty tables around, which does come as a surprise owing to the food and service and a very charming decor.
I would certainly recommend this restaurant for foodies and pre theatre dinners alike.
This is an excellent restaurant offering superb food at very reasonable prices. I was looking for a decent restaurant in the West End last Friday night and was nearly put off by a string of early newspaper reviews that criticized the location. This restaurant is in China Town, yes, but so what? It would be criminal if such a gem of a restaurant were killed by nonsense reviews of thus kind. Note: everyone who has eaten there, has raved about the food. The ambiance was very good when I went and the service was superb. I would definitely eat here again and would strongly recommend it to friends.
Morden and Lea is a fantastic new restaurant. The food is amazing and outstanding value for such delicious quality dishes. I had the roast stonebass and curry leaf potatoes for main which was so good! A different dish to what I would normally order but a great surprise. I had ginger cake with lemon curd for dessert, again another tremendous dish. I need to go back to enjoy both again. My friend was equally happy with her cod dish followed by a white chocolate dessert.
The restaurant was very quiet, but it was a Tuesday evening so I would imagine that there would be more of an atmosphere at weekends.
It is situated a few minutes from Leicester Square tube station and not far from Piccadilly Circus. It is extremely handy for pre or post theatre diners. But the set prices for such fantastic food in a top location is pretty unbeatable. Totally recommend.
This is a recently opened (modern European) brasserie in a nice space, but when we visited it early on a Saturday night, it still very much had a 'just painted' air about it and the large capacity multi-floor restaurant was noticeably NOT filling up. Probably suffering from fact that the facade was hidden beneath some china town scaffolding. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable, bit I wish they asked before filling up the glasses of wine. The food was good,but portion size over restrained.
Had the two course menu and all the food both myself and my husband had was lovely - portions are slightly on the small side as it is in a 'fine dining' style. A little quiet.
The vegetarian choice is limited to one dish on the main course list but it was a nice dish: sweet potatoes and aubergine. The salad with the Jerusalem artichoke is nice, but I would remove the celery puree as it tastes more like a garlic puree.
Great service and food, however the menu hadn't changed since our last visit over a month ago. We were looking forward to different choices. Downstairs restaurant was empty which could put people off going in. We went to the upstairs restaurant and the staff were very attentive
I have been to M&L a few times now and on all occasions it has been half empty and I just can't understand why. Perhaps it's the location, smack bang in tourist land between Leicester Square and China Town.
The food really is top notch - no complaints whatsoever. Cocktails are good & strong. Outstanding service & price level very reasonable for the West End.
The place also looks really good which adds to the experience. I just wish it had a bit more trade so that the ambiance would be a bit more happening.
Give it a go - I can guarantee you will love it!
We really enjoyed the 3 course menu for £35, lots of choice and lovely food. Thr staff were friendly and service was very good.
Nice venue and interior. Fairly empty for a Friday evening though. The service was excellent and attentive. The food was good/average but nothing out of the ordinary. The different tastes and combinations on the plates were innovative but not particularly tasty.
Had dinner here on a Monday night with a friend. We sat on the first floor. Food was generally very good - great flavours. Started with the quail starter followed with the lamb main that quite a few critics had praised. Both were excellent and very enjoyable. Service was fine - felt slightly confused at times. Place was empty bar a table of 8 people that left around 9pm. Hence you feel somewhat self conscious dining with 3-4 staff around you. Hopefully it becomes more popular when the scaffolding on the street is gone.
Had a really wonderful evening and cannot wait to go back and eat more at Morden and Lea. Great service and the food was just wonderful. Good wine list too.
Very attentive and accommodating staff. I spoke to the restaurant beforehand about eating gluten free (as a Coeliac) and they were very helpful with this. A very pleasant evening
Excellent food and friendly, efficient service. The wine, a Pinotage, was also very good, which it should have been at the price but the hefty mark up in UK restaurants does not always guarantee such good wine. Very quiet because it was a Saturday lunchtime. I imagine that there is a better atmosphere at most other times.
Great service and great food......great choice and options for a set menu and beautifully presented on the plate. Waitress was very attentive and kind enough to swap the bread for gluten free options to cater for the coeliac in the group.
I had dinner with 2 friends on Friday night at 8. Food was fantastic and great value at £35 for 3 courses.
Amazingly this restaurant is still not full at prime time on a Friday night.
Will definitely go back.
My partner and I came here before a show. I was not disappointed, the service was great. Our waiter was Daniel-thanks for being fab.
The onion tart for a starter was delightful, and we had the beef as a main. Beautiful, and not bad portions either. The cocktails are strong, expensive and small so be wary of this. I would say they're the only thing letting the place down.

Fantastic meal 3 courses for £35 was a bargain for such excellent food. Was a bit quiet at 7.30 but picked up a bit later. The stuffed pork belly & the gypsy tart were my favourites. The onion tart was lovely too. Some very good cocktails & reasonably priced wine list. A true gem!
