What Insiders Are Saying
The Culpeper is a designer gastropub that's good for groups, with an upstairs restaurant, and a rooftop bar and garden.
I always love The Culpeper and have written more reviews for them than for any other restaurant, ever, so just a few notes... Always outstanding!! The potatoes that come with the bavette steak need an award - just the best way of treating a potato, ever: crispy and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, full of the aroma of beef dripping with every bite: magical.
Only downside on our visit was the bread, very different from usual. Having raved about the sourdough to the colleagues I brought for this visit, it was instead stale, dry, and absolutely not baked on the day. Never had this experience at The Culpeper, and hope they will go back to serving fresh, baked on the day bread very soon!
The Culpeper serves my favourite Sunday Roast in London
We had a very nice and quiet table. The service was efficient and good. The food was good but not exceptional
Been to Culpeper a few times - very busy as per usual but felt rushed with the food - very quick and the staff were definitely trying to hurry us out of the door - not as comfortable or welcoming as normal.
Nice environment but disappointed by lack of roast choice and also the fact that there was only one chip
Combines great 'pub' atmosphere with a choice of very well-kept top cask beers, with seriously good gastro-pub food in both the bar and on the 'kitchen' floor.
The service was really good. Food great although the Eton mess was a bit too literal and should have been firmer. More meringue not just a small one on top of whipped cream. The roast pork was lovely vegetable wise. The pork itself was a little fatty and could have been more tender. Great buzz to the place though and really friendly
Delicious food, excellent service, and fantastic wine choices. We went for the dover sole, which was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious. Or waiter recommended a great wine to go with it. The ambience is lovely and relaxed - perfect place for a long lazy lunch!
Often visit the pub downstairs but great to try the restaurant. It was delicious and the staff were knowledgable and friendly. We celebrated our french friend’s birthday very well! (Plus the staff being able to speak French helped too!)
Really lovely spot for lunch! The food was delicious and the vibe was super cool.
This was our second time at the Culpeper and it did not disappoint. Top-notch service and excellent food. My only gripe was the table arrangement was uncomfortable, too crowded and with narrow seats - not great for a long boozy pub lunch. We may have just been unlucky there. Definitely our new fave place for Sunday roast!
Really enjoyed the food here. Great menu though small, and good service. The cheeses are excellent, glad I picked them over dessert. One thing I'd say is that we asked to move to a window table and weren't given one even though there was one free right up until the time we left. Other than this it was excellent
Beautifully decorated pub with a lively atmosphere. Good food - we had the Sunday roast
The food was absolutely delicious, we were both really impressed. Had the bavette beef and the arancini balls, YUM! The downside was service was slow, which was okay for a late sunday lunch as we weren't in any rush so we didn't really mind. But there were a few stuff ups with our starter orders as well, and none of the staff came to check on us after our meals were served so both times we had to approach them ourselves for rectification. Overall it was a great dining though. It was quite pricey. I don't think we would need starters next time as we were super full! Very content :)
Wonderful food and drink served by welcoming staff. The ambiance is a big pluss point. I can not praise the fresh food enough. Excellent!
Been to hawksmoor in the past.. Not anymore.. Culpeper is now our new evening meal destination when we visit London. We always stay around the same area, and have been once before, but this time we tried the steak and it was fantastic
We are looking forward to our next visit
Went for apertisers and desserts for my Birthday, and it was impeccable. Really tasty food, good atmosphere!
Great service and great food!
Fantastic food, lovely staff. We had a great evening!
Great bar, but the restaurant is overpriced. £20 for a cheap cut of beef - not cooked to taste - some lettuce and potatoes seem wrong.
Poor food and very poor service.
The restaurant staff and bar staff were totally unhelpful and very unaccommodating. Definitely not service with a smile!
Will not go there again!
Three of us had a memorable dinner. Both food and service were excellent. I found the chairs a little uncomfortable, but my dinner companions didn't agree. Not cheap, but we felt it was worth it. Recommended.
Cool ambient, organic and tasty food, wonderful staff. Will return 👌🏻😊
Food was great value (we shared a sole between two of use for £30 as a main) and amazingly cooked. Servers were attentive but not at all annoying. Decor was lovely. Only qualm was a lack of exciting vegetarian options - for the starter we had to take away the meat in order to eat anything and I had to eat fish, which I don't usually do, to have a main that wasn't just a simple salad.
Booked on a colleagues recommendation and didn’t disappoint. The food was great, a new gem in the city. Didn’t check out the roof top terrace however that’s for next time. My buratta starter & the bavette to share were amazing.
Great space on the rooftop but crowded when 5 sat on what was a table for 4 max. (No legroom and very tight). No shade. Great food.
Very nice place with a lively pub downstairs and a relaxed informal dining room upstairs. Small menu of well executed British food, efficient service and reasonably priced wine list. Great draft beers too.
One of the best places to go in the area
Excellent food and delicious wine with attentive service. Thank you
Really atmospheric roof terrace, but small portions and on the expensive side. Dishes are more like tapas than a meal, but are priced at 'meal' prices, esp if you're just there for lunch.
The rooftop is really nice! So green and fun the the big famous “culpeper”. The drinks were quite good and the service is amazing.
One “bad point” the mains are so smalls a girl with a normal “girl appetite” needs two...
Good buzz and lively but not crowded like sardines.
Food was good - the menu is limited in scope which I like as it is usually freshly cooked rather than mass produced measured portions which so many places have now - but with a small menu, to run out of the special (Dover sole) is disappointing.
One other point to raise is the automatic addition of £1 on the bill as a donation to Water Aid. I have 3 queries - do the owners know that only 77% of the WA donation goes to the projects - 23% on the actual fundraising an internal costs - many charities have a much smaller % on overheads. Secondly - are Culpepers matching this or just using customer monies - we need to know! And finally - why are we not told this is happening rather than doing it automatically - what if you don't agree?
I paid the £1 but would have liked to have been asked first!
Been here many times - Cool place for casual business lunch
FantAstic Sunday roast, bavette and cocktail (try the bloody Betty with beet grown on the roof), great staff. We ll be back!!!!!
Wonderful roof top garden-like terrace. Though, on a sunny day better to have a hat or sunscreen. Very homey feel.
I saw Culpeper on the Time Out list earlier and decided to give it a go. Although the food was good, it did not wow me and came at a premium. So I feel like I paid a lot more for the food than it's worth.
The menu is limited and they tend ran out of the Sole on the day (which looked quite nice).
Overall, a FAIR experience.
Lovely meal, no pressure from staff despite long time to choose (too much chat!)
Great shoreditch restaurant, competent cooking, delicious meat and simple menu with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Upstairs restaurant very atmospheric room, exposed brick and designer touches.
Short menu of inventive delicious dishes. Organic international wine list. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Comfortable casually stylish room. One of my London favourites.
Very enjoyable dinner - staff were flexible and accommodating (we were late), charming and helpful. Food was to the same high standard (creative dishes, well-cooked and presented), as I've always experienced here, and there was a good selection of drinks. Ambience was pleasant - lively but not too noisy
