About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Lively
Kabawa, a deeply personal restaurant from Chef Paul Carmichael and Momofuku, offers a nuanced and distinct perspective on Caribbean cuisine. Built around a set menu with plenty of choices, it’s a place to take your time, enjoy a meal, and discover something new each time you visit.

Kabawa’s menu is a three-course, $145 prix fixe experience, exclusive of beverage, tax, and gratuity.  The restaurant is divided between kitchen counter seating, an immersive experience with direct chef service, or more secluded table seating.

Structured to showcase the depth and diversity of Caribbean cuisine, our ingredients are thoughtfully procured, fusing local produce from neighborhoods right here in New York with specialty items sourced directly from the Caribbean.

Every touch point — from the custom mosaics to the ingredient sourcing to the instrumental music — is intentional, tapping into Chef Paul’s upbringing in Barbados to reflect the vibrant, welcoming spirit of a Caribbean home.

Over cooked fish , I sent back and the second one was overcooked as well. I could finish it . The salad was ok . Just ok. Cocktails were way too sweet . Wine was ok but small portions. Extremely high price for the mediocre food served . Not a place I would recommend. 350 usd for two. Not worth.

The family-style format works really well for the cuisine. Portions are hearty for fine dining. You won't leave hungry.

I had a great experience. Everyone who works there is really nice and it feels like a very cohesive team. The food was so flavorful (come hungry!) and their wine selection is amazing! Definitely can't wait to come back. 😄

Everyone working here was so nice and the food was excellent. I ordered the black bass and pepper shrimp and the coconut turnover for dessert. All excellent. The coconut turnover is big enough to serve 4 people honestly but I took it home and it was excellent warmed the next day. Can’t wait to go back

Phenomenal experience - extremely unique flavors, large portions (including sides and bread service), exceptional and friendly staff. Loved sitting at the counter and watching the kitchen operate. Will definitely be back, bravo Chef Paul!

This place is great, strong recommend. We were not familiar at all with Barbados' food, and this is a marvelous introduction. Calling it a "three course" menu is a touch deceptive because there is a substantial amuse to start, numerous sides with the main dishes, and a little something interesting between the main and dessert. Just a heads up, it's fine to plan to take leftovers home! Dish by dish: + The roti and sides are AMAZING and frankly I could happily go back just for a bunch more of that. So flavorful and such a range of flavors and textures. The serving piece is also fun. + For official starters we had the cassava dumplings (lovely symphony of fresh flavor over a collection of translucent round dumplings) and mushroom pastel. The pastel was a surprise because I figured it would be inside a pastry shell but no - if you've never had something like it before it's a bit akin to polenta but smoother and of course highly mushroomy, in a collection of field mushrooms. Yum! + For mains, we had Jerk duck sausage and the goat curry. The sausage is rich and meaty. The goat is a showstopper. Wow. The sauce is something else, a really nice time-released journey across the palate ending with real heat. These all come with salad, rice, beans, and sweet potatoes. Expect to be full by the end of this course. + Roasted tamarind as a sorbet. New experience! + We got the coconut turnover, which is absolutely delicious but also huge given how much you just ate. It's terrific, brioche around coconut, brown sugar, & spices. Fortunately, its leftovers mak a really really nice breakfast the next day. Counter seating is fun - you're in the kitchen pretty much so there is a lot to see and think about. It is a little loud but not so much you can't have a conversation. It's also very interesting to see all of the ingredients and servinge pieces in the shelves along the walls. The bar next door has an amazing rum selection as well as a nice cocktail menu. Wine cellar is excellent.

One of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. I’m not someone who usually enjoys or appreciates spicy food, but every dish that had those elements was absolutely incredible. Matrimony is the most aptly named dessert course, hands down. Thank you for an incredible meal.
