Dining and libations on Capitol Square with an incredible view of the Capitol, Rare combines craft cocktails, in-house dry aged steaks and attentive service in an unabashedly old-school steak house setting. Madison's downtown steakhouse features specialty cuts dry aged in-house, like the Rib Cap and the Delmonico as well as offering more traditional cuts like our filet and our rib eye. Rare is also one of the only purveyors of A5 Wagyu in Madison.

Complimenting our steaks and entrees is a specialty cocktail list and an extensive wine list with everything from wines for a big celebration to a weekday dinner.

We went for a family birthday celebration. Justin and the entire staff made the night spectacular. They made food selections and helped with the wine as well.

Everything was absolutely incredible from service to food. Only semi complaint is the noise level being pretty high, but didn’t take away from the evening at all. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had & the lobster mac & cheese is top notch.

We had a wonderful celebration dinner after my daughter competed in the Madison Half Marathon. Our food was delicious, and our server, Ashley, went above and beyond to make the occasion even more special. Thank you, Ashley!

I have been dining at Rare now for about four years, once a year, when out in Madison for a conference. Below is a detailed review, from last night. To be fair, I'm a hard grader. Bottom line, for the money a very good dining experience, but not an outstanding experience. Here are the positive and negative details, several of which are fine points, but which separate the very good from the outstanding. Ambience is typical steak house, nicely appointed. My server was attentive and pleasant, but not engaging. That is what I would expect for Rare, with prices as they are. My smoked Old Fashioned was delivered in a smoke filled box which was great, but as soon as it arrived the server removed it. They should have given me the option of letting it sit in the box to absorb more of the smoke aroma. Good, not great. My lobster bisque was excellent, though could have had a bit more lobster meat in it. That was skimpy. Mediocre rolls were delivered without butter. They were warm, but particularly plain. The most disappointing part of the meal was the Caesar salad, which Rare used to do very well at the table side. There was nothing imaginative or interesting to what I received last night. My NY strip had a great flavor, though was medium, not the ordered medium rare. The loaded baked potato and green bean sides were spot on. No dessert ordered. All in all a fine meal, but not what I would hope for, given the $150 bill for one.
