About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for scenic views
Dean Banks’ fine dining restaurant is located within the historic Pompadour restaurant at The Caledonian Hotel, Princes Street.

The restaurant embraces the same ethos as Haar Restaurant, St Andrews and showcase the best of land and sea. Table cloths line the tables in a ‘wedding cake of a room’.

The menu constantly evolves, reflecting the seasons. Dean heroes our land and seas, producing a menu which showcases Scotland’s natural resources. This includes the very best local produce from Edinburgh, Fife and beyond. Foraged seasonal produce is preserved to enjoy the fruits of Summer year-round. Each guest will enjoy a sensory experience like no other, which will leave a lasting memory.

Dean’s passion for food is truly reflected in each course which will take you on a journey through his past travels and experiences.

Very disappointed in the experience of having the lunch tasting menu. The staff were amazing and very attentive showing great knowledge of the food and drinks being served but the quality and delivery of the actual food was not at the level it should have been. No denying that there was a high level of skill required to produce the food but the portion sizes were laughable and insulting. The total ambience of the restaurant is cold and not in anyway welcoming, the waiting staff saved the day but they could only do so much.

Different menu due to itison voucher. Food was fine but not as good as Haar or Dulse which were both excellent. Shame the menu was changed when staff found out we had itison voucher as had we been able to sample more of the main menu we may have returned. Overall very underwhelming and we all left very hungry despite adding on extras. Didn’t feel like the voucher was offered to entice customers to return. Staff were attentive. Highly recommend both Haar and Dulse, wouldn’t recommend Pompadour I’m afraid, sorry.

I was slightly disappointed in our tasting menu experience. The staff were lovley and the quality of the cooking was excellent but it all left me unsatisfied. The atmosphere of the reastraunt is cold. The cool colours, wide spaces, and nothing to break up the light sources all contributed to this feeling of exposure. The food itself was interesting but lacked acid and depth. I love eating new ingredients, but it felt like I was limited to my parents' organic veg box with no acid to really liven it up. I wanted a pickled element in almost every dish. Even the desserts, which were rhubarb( one of the sharpest fruits) and the baked cream, were very one-note. There is no acid and no real substance to either. All the dishes lacked substance. I was craving carbohydrates the whole way through. I felt like we had the gluten-free menu. The meat course, quail was the least inspired I felt, I wanted crunch, I wanted sauce, I wanted acid, I wanted layers! I wanted a carb! If you are going to roast a beautiful quail leg like a mini roast dinner, then give me more!

A beautiful location. The food was a taste bud sensation. Our waitress was top notch and extremely lovely. Even though we were the only ones in the restaurant we had a great experience.

We had a fantastic Set menu with wine pairings. Very tasty and beautiful dishes. Well chosen wines, served by really nice and competent personnel. And then the room, loved the atmosphere.
