Tucked beneath the iconic Walper Hotel, our attentive and neighbourly staff welcome you to enjoy local ingredients done well, with a thoughtfully sourced menu focused on sustainability and diversity.
Booked mid week to celebrate our anniversary. We were greeted warmly by all and the food and drink specials were explained. Our server was a wonderful conversationalist and was knowledgable about the wines as well as pairings with the food. We both had steaks - perhaps a little heavily salted but delicious none the less. An excellent meal with outstanding service.
Nice place. Food was good
Our server did a great job
The restaurant is located in the beautifully renovated Walper Hotel - a historical and architectural landmark in Kitchener. I sat with my 2 guests in TWH'S downstairs seats, a welcome respite from the outside summer heat. The lunchtime crowd was gradually petering out when we got there and so the atmosphere was fairly quiet. The menu had a good variety of options, ranging from fairly generous starters to interestingly varied salads, somewhat less interesting sandwiches and burgers, good dinner options, and prime-quality steak dishes. None of us had huge appetites, so we tried to stay away from the heavier options. I wanted something to warm my gullet so I started with the lobster bisque followed by a cheeseburger and fries. My 2 friends ordered 2 different types of salads. One got baby kale and quinoa salad served with dried cranberries, diced apples, pickled onion, gem tomatoes, radish and apple vinaigrette. The other got heritage greens served with fennel, feta cheese, cucumber, grape tomatoes, and sherry vinaigrette. Both chose a generous portion of grilled salmon to go with their salads. My friends were very satisfied with their salads. I generally liked my cheeseburger, which was served on a sourdough bun with black truffle mozzarella, aged cheddar, yellow cheddar, and sundried tomato. The burger was nicely seasoned and succulent, but I found the delicate taste of the black truffle mozzarella got lost among the other cheeses.
We finished with peppermint teas and a coffee. Our server was courteous and generally pleasant though I did feel we were a being a bit rushed towards the end of the meal. No sooner had we ordered our teas and coffee than the server presented us with our bills, and though she assured us that we could stay and chat, we still felt we should be wrapping things up. The meal was planned as an occasion when we could catch up on each other's news so we didn't appreciate being rushed.
Our overall experience at TWH Social was very pleasant though!
Food was expensive for what you received. They were out of 2 or 3 different kinds of wine before they found a bottle that was available.
Live music was too loud!!!
Very good dinner. My 16th year old girl said she had the best hamburger ever
The food was delicious but the wait for the food was long! One gal in our group was only advised the dish she ordered could not be provided as they ran out of the fish at the time when the rest of our orders were being brought out! She has to wait for her order while the rest enjoyed the food! More staff are needed!
Good food, nice atmosphere, service was great, would go again
A great spot. I was pleasantly surprised. My turkey club was just like any other turkey club with the exception that the bacon did not have to be searched out, nice thick slices. The calamari was divine. Our server Matt, although he was very busy, was attentive and stopped by several times to be sure our dinner was enjoyable.
Overall a very disappointing experience especially after having enjoyable meals here in the past.
The music was loud making it challenging to hear our server. When I told her that I was having difficulty hearing her she told us that she was getting over an illness. She apologized profusely when she spilled cream on our feet explaining that she was “pounding back the Buckley’s”. I spoke to a supervisor asking why the server was working while ill and she said she would speak to her. Sick employees really shouldn’t be serving food.
Our meals were average and when our new server asked how our meal was and I responded with “It was okay” she didn’t ask why or seemed concerned.
When the bill came I asked where our original server was. I was told that she was sick and went home. I said that she shouldn’t have been serving food then and our new server said that she didn’t which I disagreed with.
A really unsatisfactory evening and I won’t be returning.
Lovely place, nice staff. The general Manager came over to check on us, that was fantastic
The pork belly sliders were not good and our server lacked a sense of humour. Everything else was great.
The food and service were extremely disappointing. We were looking forward to brunch with the family and it felt like everyone was doing their job for the first time. To top it off, after making an error on my bill it took them 25 minutes to correct it. Will not go back.
Came here for a Mother’s Day brunch. If I could rate food and service with a negative score, I would.
First, we came on time for the reservation and waited at the front to be greeted. Servers, bar tenders and everyone else obviously saw us but did not acknowledge our large group waiting to JUST be greeted. After 20 minutes of everyone walking past us and ignoring us, I finally went up to the bar and ask if we could be seated for our reservation. After much confusion about our reservation that I clearly had on Open Table, they finally seated our group. Awful start to a celebration for our mothers.
Secondly, the food was T R A S H and over priced. The only thing I can say that was good was that it came in a timely manner. I’ve had better French toast at ghetto gas station in the middle of no where. Tasteless, uncreative, boring. The presentation sucked too. It was 4 halves of bread slapped on the plate. Inconsistent as well, we all ordered French roasts and they were all different tasting and different looking...
Thirdly, I was informed that we could order from the regular breakfast menu before the reservation. Turns out, no one know what they were talking about because we were restricted to a special menu that was awful. You had to pick from 3 options. Our mothers couldn’t even order their favourite foods.
Honestly though, if you like to over spend on a trash small salad, trash French toast and a trash dessert for $35 then TWH social is the place to be! Also, how can you not make good dessert..
I’m glad our mothers had a great time spending with family, but I wish I never booked TWH social for this celebration. I won’t make that mistake again.
On a positive note, the restaurant is clean and the lightening is nice.
We had eaten at the TWH Social twice before and wanted to go again as our initial experiences were good (2 years ago). This time food and service was sub par. We ordered the oysters and they were served to us at room temperature. They tasted alright but we prefer oysters chilled. Our waiter was new and struggled. He could not identify the accompanying sauces for the oysters. He had to go ask and by the time he returned we had tasted them and figured it out ourselves. The waiter then identified the sauces incorrectly calling the horseradish "mignonette". We also ordered the charcuterie platter which was just okay, nothing special. We've had much better elsewhere. The tapas plate was pretty good but the poutine was very salty and very soggy. We had to wait a long time for the charcuterie and the tapas. By that time we were going to be late for our event so we asked for the bill. The waiter took forever to oblige and we had to hustle to make our show. One great thing- 1/2 price bottles of wine. We had an excellent chenin blanc that was served nice and cold and we enjoyed it. After the initial pour, we were left to our own devices but that's not a big deal. Also, there was a pervading smell of chlorine (bleach) in the room which was offensive and did not make the food any more appetizing. Overall we were disappointed and will not be returning.
Very nice restaurant. The veggie hand held burger was good but too thin, not enough of the good fillings as described on the menu.
My husband’s plate was well presented (beef cheek something..) it looked more refined. He liked it , my compliments to the chef for that.
I was running late and called the restaurant to say I was on my way. ten minutes late for my reservation time. Upon arrival, I stood at the waiting area for quite some time, ignored by three staff behind the far end of the bar a a server ten feet away chatting it up with hos table. The restaurant was not busy at all, with very few diners. Not impressed so far, as I had limited time to dine before the show I was going to that evening. Once seated, the manager seemed unapologetic, more concerned with her staff than a patron. More waiting before my server arrived to take my drink and food order. Vegetarian options were limited so I ordered truffle fries and a kale salad with falafel. Seemed like a quick choice. Soggy, small portion and tasteless fries with plain mayonnaise on the side.
Extremely dry falafel. The olive oil in kale salad lemon dressing tasted somewhat rancid the more I hurridly worked my way through it. The server did come by a couple of times and asked how everything was but she seemed a bit too rushed to wait to wait to hear my comments. Asked for my bill the second time she came by, paid cash and left, never to return. I read the reviews prior to booking a reservation.I was highly disappointed by the service and my food experience. Would not recommend going here.
I came to TWH Social to to celebrate with my friends and we were not disappointed! Such lovely service and the food was amazing as always.
It might have been my mistake in reserving and not mentioning it was an anniversary, but getting a small table tucked away in a corner was a bit weird, and led to a few times wondering if our waiter would be back. Then we were next to a very loud group who disrupted our dinner, and asked us to take photos of them. Can't fault the restaurant for this, but it just added to the less than satisfying night.
We were allay disappointed by the lack of options for people with seafood allergies, as the meat related portions of the sharing plates (meat and cheese, the tapas) all started with shellfish as main ingredient or dish.
I can see friends who wouldn't have minded these issues, and I'm sure that's more the clientele you're aiming for. But it was not an experience I would have chosen had I known, nor will I choose to try again.
Good experience. A little loud for our business meeting
My partner and I went here as a Friday date night and couldn't have been more impressed. There was a wonderful lively vibe to the place and the food was excellent. We were so happy with our waiter who had only just started working there this week. He knew lots about the business, history, menu and floor layout. It's also worth noting that the location is excellent for a variety of photos (the neon sign, the glass wine room, the bar space, etc.). We have also recommended this place to our friends, as it is the perfect mix between a restaurant and a club space to get social in!
Food was excellent and we felt the value was very good. Service was friendly but seemed distracted, took a while to order and receive our drinks, and forgot an app which we mentioned and it was made for us fairly quickly but still billed for. Took a little while to pay as well after we mentioned we would like to head out. Will return as we have had better service here before and hoping that returns.
It was good, my go-to spot in town! 100% recommend this place if you’re going out with friends or a date night. Drinks are amazing, food is a hit or miss, depending on what you order but most of the time it is good. I tend to go here for drinks, apps & desserts. Great place to go when it isn’t busy. Sometimes it does get loud and you have to shout to your friend to talk to them (usually when there’s live music and lots of people around) but otherwise if you go when it’s not busy, it’s an amazing place to go. Servers, bartenders, hosts are fantastic. They’re very friendly and accommodating! They love to converse and they make great recommendations on their menu. Love trying new things from this restaurant.
Nice food and atmosphere, as well as great service.
Dropped in prior to going to the Symphony.
Had a fellow singing and playing the guitar....quite talented and enjoyable. Sat in the dining area ...the restaurant is very comfortable.
Ordered drinks while we looked over the menu. We shared oysters, raspberry point. Tried the scotch bonnet mignonette and it was as hot as you would expect.
she ordered the roasted cod and I had the beef cheek. Both were excellent. My wife, who has the palate, commented that it was one of the best restaurant meals we have had in awhile.
Finished with the chocolate and peanut butter dessert, cappuccino for her and americano for me.
The women dining were all offer d a glass of sparkling wine at the start of the meal in honour of Woman’s Day, nice touch.
Very enjoyable and we made it to the concert on time..
The decor is a bit "European wine cellar-ish" which I really like. It is very clean and there is plenty of room between tables and other guests. It seems like the menu is rather limited. Our waiter was obviously put off when I ordered "medium well" Steak Frites. He not so gently tried to steer me toward the Beef Cheeks instead. The steak was presented just the way I like it, but had the flavour of a mediocre steak. Other than being a bit condescending, our waiter served us well.
The beef cheeks and the cod were amazing! Mark, our server was so great and made our experience delightful and fun!
Love the oysters!
Great food special as we were there to see a performance at the theatre, service was excellent and atmosphere as well. will definitely return
Hamburger was under cooked. Soup had unknown woody bits (like a stem). "Bites" were over filled and hard to manage.
Food was great. I had the avocado toast special for brunch and it was delicious. Waitresses were friendly and attentive.
After reserving the spot for just us 2 when we arrived we were seated & table about 15 ft away was a larger table of 8 ladies that where just too loud. So when to hostess and asked for another table and he said well there is another section but that is just as loud, if not even louder.
You are telling me when you make reservations for 2 people you can’t plan the fact that we can’t have a place anywhere in the restaurant that you can’t even hear each other talk.
Not impressed. And neither were any of the other tables of 2 or 4. They probably just review on open table.
I would like to say, the Ambiance of the social was amazing, the food was amazing, the look of the bar, 1st rate!!!
What I did not appreciate, and was completely, taken away by, was:
I made a reservation, I verified on and confirmed with the hostess that took my reservation that ALL Canadian white wines were half price on Wednesday after 4.
The hostess also even told me, that she would see to it, that my reservation was noted to this effect.
And that we would receive the 13TH STREET VIOGNIER 2016
Niagara, Canada for the Wednesday half price special.
But, when I mentioned this to our male server, he told me that the hostess was just a waitress, and did not know what she was talking about ! And your restaurant only does half price on your more expensive bottles of wine, that is not what your website states.
I did get the information off of YOUR website, as to the half price wine night, and it just made for a very, uneasy, feeling while at your restaurant.
This was a date night, for myself and my girlfriend, and this was a planned visit for made especially to try your Oysters ( My girlfriends favorite) ..... As well as the wine ! In conjunction with the Brian Adams show that evening
I did not want to express these feelings while out on a date, it would have made for an even more uncomfortable feeling on a date night.
We came from Barrie, which was quite a trek due to the weather that evening.
I hope that whoever is reading this, can identify, with what I am actually trying to express ?
If a more detailed explanation is needed about our 1st visit to TWH?
I would be more then willing to explain my feelings about this evening.
Amazing service and delicious food. Can't go wrong with TWH Social!!
They did not have the beer that I ordered, They did not have the meal that I tried to order, Service was terrible, waiter did not even introduce himself, got a drink at the bar before our reservation and felt like we were not welcome.
poor service for over priced meal
The food was delicious just like our last visit. Although the service itself was good, the server and host could have been friendlier-a little cold and unwelcoming. It was New Year's Eve so at least throw a few balloons out! No mention or evidence of it being a special occasion which made the ambiance seem meh.
Menu was misleading and overpriced. Multiple errors were made with the bill. Music was also too loud for the size of the venue.
Nice variety of beverages, apps and mains well presented with good service.
It was great. $1 oysters night was fantastic. Live music was enjoyable and added to the evening Desserts were delicious.
A little quiet as we arrived between lunch and dinner hours, but they were accomodating. Food and service were fine. Beautiful interior design.
