Open Table confirmed my reservation here. After traveling from Louisiana to New York for our anniversary, we discovered that French Epi is no longer open. This was supposed to be our anniversary dinner, so I cannot put into words just how disappointed we were after walking to the site to find it closed. We will no longer be using Open Table.
I made reservation and nobody informed me that the venue is closed!! It was genuine surprise.
The website menu does not even come close to the restaurant menu. Everything we asked about that was on the menu was not available or was different such as: ordered shrimp tagliatelle and we were told there is no shrimp, ordered hanger steak and we were told that there is no hanger steak it is a rib eye. Service was poor.
I do not understand why this restaurant is always empty. The food is beyond delicious and the service is welcoming. They could use a bit of decorating and the credit card charge on the bill is a bit perplexing. We have been back three times because the food and the service are so good. When we asked them to turn down the music, they complied immediately.
Small menu but everything on it was done perfect!!
Samantha was very attentive
We will go back
Thank you so much for the review! We hope to see you soon.
the duck was incredibly over cooked to the point where I couldn’t eat it and the seasoning on the fatty yet crispy skin was off putting. Seemed like they cooked the duck on top hot of a pan.
the octopus came with mushed avocado.... which I have never had before but it was strange. Overall the octopus was cooked well but was a small portion.
The pull apart bread was completely saturated with oil and butter to the point that it leaked oil and was spongy.
Lastly the creme brûlée had a weird taste and the sugar on top was not torched enough.
The ambience was loud pop music and the restaurant was COMPLETELY empty at 7pm on a Thursday. it seemed like a fake fancy restaurant.
The wine was very expensive yet very gross.
Would not recommend.
oh boy, where to start. not sure if it was the lack of people at primetime on a Saturday night, or the trap/club music, or the "modern" lighting, or the one person staffing the front room, or the LaGuardia'esque iPad menus that made us walk right out of the restaurant, but the culmination of all these factors made us stand up and immediately leave. how can a restaurant have so many warning signs in the first minute? it made for a good laugh for the rest of the night, though. hopefully they can turn it around before they inevitably have to close.
friendly people but bad service, food is terrible for brunch, trust me don't even bother to try this place
Our experience at Frech Epi was quite possibly the WORST restaurant experience all 4 of us have ever had. It was THAT bad.
Lets start with the wait staff.... They were all completely clueless as to what was on the menu and could not answer any questions we had. They spoke almost no English, so communicating was very difficult. Every single order showed up incorrect. When we confronted the waitstaff about the wrong orders, they became annoyed and even more confused and did nothing to remedy the situation. And to top it all off, the food was HIDEOUS! Every dish was inedible. They even managed to make bacon taste awful. We were so unhappy with all the food. Then, we were grossly overcharged for our drinks and when we pointed it out, the waitress grew angry and unreasonable. She told us that she did not even really work there and that she was doing us a favor.. WHAT??!! I could go on about more strange things that happened during that brunch, but I really dont want to go there in my mind once again.. just know that this place is the pits!
My family and I decided to have dinner at your establishment today after having numerous wonderful brunches here where the service was impeccable.
We were appalled at how slow the service was as far as our food. Why did “the soup of the day” and pull apart bread take more than 75 minutes to come to the table?
After several queries to the waitress asking where is the soup, we were told, “I am so sorry but the chef is temperamental..” Really? I am so disappointed by all of this and another table had food coming almost every 5 minutes.
We were so frustrated that we were ready to leave. My mom is diabetic and needed to eat promptly so we had no choice but to stay.
Also, my brother-in law ordered a steak and what came out was not what was advertised in the picture, instead it was a small piece of fillet mignon. Really unacceptable!
We appreciated the extra soup as a recourse, but it was really not enough to make up for all of these mishaps. The food is very delicious but it’s hard enjoy if you are mad and frustrated.
I hope this never happens again. I would like to continue to believe in this restaurant, but this experience is going to make it pretty hard to do so.
Very pleased with our meal at French Epi. We dined early on a Sunday, the food was superb. The restaurant had run low on oysters, but gave us their last five for free. The truffle cauliflower spread and fresh rolls are a unique, refreshing change from bread and butter (even though I love butter). The whole branzino is the best value in town, and perhaps the tastiest.
The steak was done to perfection and the burger was outstanding (prefer med well, and that’s how it came out).It was flavorful, juicy and the best I’ve had.
We had wonderful brunch , that waffles are great , we had also steak fries and eggs everything made perfect. We love the garden . This is our favorite spot for brunch.
Amazing atmosphere and decor. I'm in love with beautiful garden. They have outstanding food and great service ! 6$ housemade huge Belgian waffles were super delicious!!! Definitely gonna come back !
Great food we had steak and salmon all delicious, the service was good we love their garden . We definitely will be back.
Great place for brunch and drinks. Food fresh and tasty.
Sysco-quality food at locally-sourced prices. Waited an hour for entrees to arrive because there was only one waiter, one bartender, and a manager working the Saturday dinner shift. Owner cutting corners means a bad experience for customers, in terms of food and service.
The appetizers were tasty but they came a bit late. The worst thing was the main course. So we sat down at 8 pm and our main course came by at 9:15 pm. Meanwhile the waitress never informed us about the situation in the kitchen until I asked her. And she had an attitude. I don’t know maybe she got stressed because of the kitchen being late. But obviously not my fault as a customer.
My lamb dish’s wine reduction was awful because I have this weird bitter taste from every bite. Eventhough I asked for medium well the lamb was so medium.
And the worst part was that’s our anniversary dinner. When I did my reservation I put that note. This is what I get for our anniversary dinner.
Thank you for not being helpful and this unfortunately worst anniversary dinner experience.
It was such a n awful experience.
I celebrated my birthday with friends and we had an amazing time. They food was incredible. The service was great and the atmosphere incredible. We had the time of our lives. Hope to come back soon. Cheers!
Food has gotten quite better and the service as well. Took 3 tries but I'm confident they will be consistent now. It took a year for them to work out the kinks.
The service was great and the food was delicious. He portion size for the price was more than expected. I would go again.
This place is great, the food is amazing at a reasonable prices . The setting is very elegant. Definitely recommend this place .
Weird vibe but nice folks and good food. Word to the wise, the cheese bread appetizer (can't remember the name) is an ENTIRE loaf of bread. It's heavy too. Could feed a small army.
Loved this restaurant!!! Delicious food, amazing service and overall great ambience. Will go back, highly recommend it.
Hidden Jem. Good food
The food is amazing and the service is great! I have been for both dinner and brunch and would definitely recommend this spot to anyone interested in having a delicious meal!
Very good food with not so many French choice on the menu but all and all very good with reasonable prices. I had the salmon and my husband had the fish stew. We enjoyed them both.
So glad we finally tried out this spot! Everything was wonderful and we will definitely return!
We went there for dinner the food was delicious we had rib pastrami and seafood stew . The service was great and attending. We will be back soon .
The food is fresh and delicious. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often! Great restaurant for almost all occasions.
Very odd place. We were there from 8pm-10pm on a Saturday night and not one other patron was in the restaurant when we arrived and not one patron came in throughout our dining experience. Waitress couldn't open a bottle of wine - she broke the cork in the bottle. Wouldn't consider it French. Part of the dinner was cold. Very mediocre and didn't match the price range. The only positive was that it was obviously quiet and clean.
unfortunately this place does not seem to have it figured out. seeing as we were the only table in the place, it should've been easy to get our order right-- however there were errors w the appetizer course AND the main course. kind of like an empty subway car, if a dining room is empty, there's almost always a good reason!
Food was mediocre
Great food and decor. The restaurant is probably new, so the staff is not very good at service, but they will...
Really nice sweet place. Super pleasant staff and real tasty menu. Excellent low key brunch for Mother's Day !
Surprisingly great! Had low expectations maybe? But filet mignon with eggs were *so good*. Even though steak ordered med rare came out very rare, it was so delicious I ate it up anyway! This may sound weird, but even the eggs were cooked with a lot of skill, you could tell! Value was unreal. Like, I told them they should be charging more. They won't make it serving $12 steak and eggs with $5 mimosas! Enjoy while you can!
Ambiance and food presentation are excellent. I had the shrimp and scallops entree. The scallops were seasoned perfectly but the shrimp barely. The appetizers of crab beignets, fish sticks & anchovie toast were ok. My friend had The whole sea bass grilled which she enjoyed but could have been deboned. The complimentary chocolate lava cake was lovely as was the delicious whipped cream. Service was good.
I love the decor here. The food and the service are outstanding. Try this place you will be happy you did.
The food was great. Very slow service with only a couple tables of people. It took over 30 minutes to get our apps and neither our apps or entrees were served to everyone at the same time. It seemed like they were in the weeds the whole evening and there were maybe a dozen people eating.
Tasty, healthy, fresh, food and nice, authentic atmosphere makes this restaurant an interesting option to consider in Greenpoint. I've dined here on number of occasions and always loved it.
Great place for weekend brunch with friends as well as date night dinner. Kids are welcome!
Will be back!
