Chelsea's Chowder House
Okay, so maybe this isn't entirely objective. I've been a volunteer on the Queen Mary for the past 27 years. But she is still anything but 'Plain Jane'.
My wife and I had cocktails at the Observation Bar followed by dinner at the Chelsea to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The drinks, food and service were all excellent. And the unique experience of an evening aboard the world's most elegant and storied ocean liner simply cannot be rivaled. The evening view of Queensway Bay, the Shoreline Marina and downtown Long Beach made for an incomparably romantic evening for us.
First let me say, the location was awesome, the food and service were great. My son and I had crab cakes to start and they were spot on. We both ordered the Cioppino and it was very good. It comes out in a large Le Creuset pot and has a lot of goodies in it!! Its very hot. The broth was excellent. The only thing I can say is that Cioppino is tricky. Its all about the timing. The lobster and Ono were a bit overcooked. But still pretty good job overall. The only downside was that the teenager next to us was playing something very loud on his phone and his mother was not parenting. It took away from the ambiance! I wish there was a policy about noise on devices and waitstaff could tell them to put earbuds in or turn it off! Still, I’ll come back.
What outstanding food! The location is unbeatable on the Queen Mary with a gorgeous view of the harbor so we weren’t expecting truly amazing food, but it was phenomenal. The Chelsea bread is addictive. Best bread I’ve had possibly ever! My daughter had chicken pot pie which she raved about and I had delectable crab cakes and Mexican corn. We will go out of our way to eat here next time we’re in Southern California.
We did leave before we really wanted to... We couldn’t hear each other talk it was so loud. However, everything else was amazing!
Our waiter was excellent. Ruben was very good and fun. We will soon.
Our table was near a window with a skyline view including the lighthouse and entrance to the harbor. The food was great. I had the lobster roll which came with a cup of the clam chowder. It made me want more. My husband had the piled high roast beef reuben on rye which came with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and horseradish. We also had an order of their steak fries which were so tasty, crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. For dessert we decided to share the creme brule. This is my favorite dessert and I was not disappointed. It was not watery at all and all I needed was more. They had heard that it was our 15th anniversary so they also brought us out a piece of cheesecake with a candle in it and a chocolate sign saying happy anniversary. We both thought this was nice, thoughtful, and a bonus. The cheesecake was great and made us feel special. We can't wait to go back.
Been coming here for overs 10 years and never been disappointed the staff are very friendly and very attentive, they even accommodated my wife’s request for fish & chips which were not on the menu. Can’t wait to go back again soon
I take bae here. Bae likes the boat; therefore, I do too
Good food. Expensive but spectacular views . Special steak and shrimp was $52.
It was very good a d a large portion.
A great evening for our family to celebrate a birthday. Food was very good, service was over the top! Just an overall fun experience onboard the Queen Mary, with a great dining experience.
What a fabulous and elegant restaurant! The service was impeccable and the food was phenomenal. The ambiance of being on such an old ship was amazing! We will definitely go there again!
We visit every year and look forward to our dining experience. This year was very disappointing. We go for steamer clams, they no longer serve this item. Also no more lobster bisque or creamed spinach. We had the lobster tail, quite chewy and shrimp linguine. We asked for bread. We were charged $8 and were not informed of that. Will never go back. Very sad.
Our waitress and wait staff were 5 star!
I ordered the burger and crab cake. Crab cake was very fishy, the burger was over cooked with no flavor. For a $20+ burger I would expect a high grade of beef which it didn’t seem to be. I ordered chicken tenders and fries for my son which were slightly over-fried. And the asparagus which was the only thing that was perfectly cooked. The waitress was very kind and apologized and offered to bring me something else but we were in a hurry and had to leave. She did have the burger removed from my bill. Next time I’ll try one of the other restaurants on the boat.
Great place to go waiter was excellent. Food was brought on time and the service was great
Great experience to celebrate my birthday with family
Very professional, great food and great service. Would recommend this to anyone Who is looking for a night out have fun and catch a great view of the Queen Mary and it’s amenities.
They made our night memorable. I thought that the note placed on the reservation were going to be overlooked BUT to my humbling surprised they did go above and beyond to make my boyfriend birthday one for the books. The restaurant & staff were so nice and knowledgeable. I have a special diet I fallow so they made sure to help accommodate my needs. Thank you so much and we shall be returning again! God bless
Food is overpriced and everything is ala carte. Menu is limited
We had a very nice day and stay over at the Queen Mary. Our dinner at Chelsea's Chowder House was wonderful. A great view looking out at the harbor, great service by the attentive staff, excellent food and even a few questions answered about ghostly activity aboard the ship. We had oysters, wedge salad, sandwiches (I highly recommend the lobster roll) and chowder. Thank you for a lovely evening.
The food and the atmosphere were wonderful! Perfect date night with my daughter!
I love the Queen Mary. I was a bit disappointing with my clam chowder. The flavor was nice but only had 1 clam. Salads are large and fresh. Veggie side dishes are fresh.
The food was very good overall. What made the experience a little disappointing was that we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. I sent a message to the restaurant and I also told the hostess when we arrived. She said she would tell our server to bring out a treat at the end of dinner and would keep it a surprise. The server didn’t do anything except give us the check.
The Chowder House was a a great find on the Queen Mary. The staff was great. We had a fire alarm go off in the ship and we had to evacuate. The staff made sure when we returned we resumed our dinner with no missteps. The food was quickly replaced, and made to order. The staff apology and made sure that we were satisfied. My husband who is gluten free had plenty of dinner options and best of all a wonderful gluten free carrot cake that he happily devoured.
This place is located aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Let me preface this by saying it is a heavily visited tourist attraction so I expected the prices would be a bit high. Trust me, that's an understatement. Now I don't mind paying a healthy check for good food, but sadly what we received was mediocre at best. The seafood cioppino had a decent starter base, but what they did to the fish and lobster in that dish should be criminal. The fish was reminiscent of wood chips and the lobster a chunk of inner tube due to being EXTREMELY overcooked. Also, for the prices billed, you would think they'd at least provide some bread or dinner rolls. I really don't feel I should be nickel and dimed $4 for bread when our check was $125.00 for three people to eat subpar seafood in a very casual atmosphere. My wife said the Shrimp scampi wasn't bad and I have to admit the shrimp and scallops in the cioppino didn't suffer the same masochistic treatment the fish and lobster did. I'm guessing the "chef" added those toward the end of cooking (properly). Lord knows why he destroyed the poor fish and lobster... but it's pretty inexcusable when you're billing for a fine dining experience.
Great service, good food. A bit pricey! Waiter was helpful and attentive.
Surprisingly good food great atmosphere and view!
The Queen Mary experience is always special and Chelsea’s did not disappoint. The fish was fresh(although slightly over cooked) and the service was great. The ambiance is always nice on board and the views were fantastic. The overall values was good but there of course is a small premium for dining aboard ship.
Overall our party had a great experience. The view from our table was perfect and the service was very attentative.
The place is said to be haunted. From the food and the ambience, this really seems true.
We didn't want to take a tour of the boat. The last at the ticket counter suggested getting a reservation at Chelsea's Chowder House to get on the boat. It was a great idea. We got to see quite a bit of the boat, and had a great meal to top it off.
excellent food, Stellar service. Would highly recommend.
The food and service was excellent . Would definitely eat there again should we stay on The Queen Mary again .
We had a wonderful experience and I highly recommend eating here if you’re on the ship! We booked a reservation through Open Table and had a beautiful, window-side water view table. Our server, Louis, was attentive, informative, and friendly. The food was FANTASTIC! The cod with asparagus was great, and the “avocado fries” appetizer was delicious! We will definitely eat here again if we find ourselves in the Long Beach area.
Our server was experienced, had perfect timing and simply made our visit outstanding. The food was so flavorful and delicious, made of quality ingredients and know how. The view cannot be beat. A perfect stop for lunch!
Very Good restaurant indeed. Great Food. If traveling to Long Beach, CA make this stop a priority.
We had pre-booked this prior to our one night stay on the Queen Mary on Saturday 18 May 2019. Our preference was to eat in the Sir Winston restaurant but realised it was not accessible for wheelchair users.
We knew that the Chowder House had mediocre reviews so we were prepared.
Our corn chowder soup was lukewarm when served.
My swordfish main course was very salty and generally over seasoned and the creme brulee dessert was only average and overpriced. The bill was presented prior to us receiving the dessert!
Our waiter failed to make us feel welcomed and valued.
This restaurant needs to 'up the game' and make the dining experience more enjoyable.
I had a visitor from Ohio and wanted to treat her to a special experience we started with the shrimp cocktail which was room temp and tasteless. Our server removed it from our bill. We then had the wedge salads which were ok but not chilled. Finished with the clam chowder soup which was delicious. Be prepared to pay for your bread which was very good. It was a mediocre meal and experience. Expected more!
It was pricey but worth it. We had a wonderful dinner and the service was great.
The website is out of date and the food was below average. The waiter was on the ball and tried to please. The blond manager had a horrible attitude and did not understand customer service
Mussels and chowder were excellent. Wonderful service and great view. Make your reservation via Open Table ahead of time to avoid purchase of an entry ticket to the Queen Mary.
