Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

In my experience, service at HSG has always been top notch. They have their signature dishes which we found to be excellent. Reliably high quality & attention to detail. A perfect “before-the-performance” choice!

I have written reviews on The Hayes Street Grill in the past so you can look at those reviews and see other comments. I have been eating at this restaurant for 42 years and they are always fabulous. Whenever out of town guests are in town, I always take them to The Hayes Street Grill. When I attend concerts at The San Francisco Symphony, it is my go to restaurant to eat at prior to a concert. Many of the servers have been there since the restaurant opened in 1979. That along makes a powerful statement about how well the restaurant is run. In brief, it is one of the finest seafood restaurants in the world and they always have a great assortment of salads and appetizers. Their deserts are also excellent.

Wonderful service and old-school ambiance. Food is simple and impeccable, including best French fries in SF. Somewhat pricey though

Whenever we attend a City Arts or theatre event near the civic center, we like to go to Hayes Street Grill. The food and service are excellent. Their staff are experienced and take great care of their customers.

We visited in a Saturday night with the theater crowd, so it was harried, but I won’t be back. My food was beyond bland—under seasoned, no sauce. My black cod came with a dollop of plain rice straight out of the rice cooker with zero embellishment. All this for $38. Service was brusk. I was eating a piece of bread when the server started to clear my bread plate. “I’m not finished” I said. He said “it’s just a plate”, snatched it, and walked off. Seriously?!

One of our favorite places. We lucked out last night, sandabs were on the menu!! Yum! And the Basque cheesecake is like no other, light and flavorful.

We were under a time crunch for a performance and HSG did it again - got us out in time. I had a very tasty paella with a glass of Sancerre. I only with HSG's wine by the glass w.ould have included Vermentino. Perhaps another night. My dining companion just loved her sand dabs which looked plump and very fresh. Can't beat the food at HSG.
