For ninety-eight years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1926, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

I put in the reservation request that we were there for a very special occasion and it was not acknowledged at all throughout the 2 hours we were there. The hostess did not wish my guest a happy birthday, the waiter did not either, and there was not even a candle at the end with a birthday wish. I mean we were there for tea. There were so many sweets and no one was able to make my guest feel special by acknowledging the special occasion we were there for. It was so disappointing. It was also very disappointing that they had run out of so many tea options and we got there at the start of tea service. I also would think at such a place you would not get tea in a tea bag but that’s what my guest received and that was disappointing as well. We did the royal tea service. We also both did cocktails. First course was very good, but second course was very average. Wish one had the option to just have the first course. The blinis that came with the caviar were also dry and stale. While the first course was good, I am overall disappointed as I expected more: tea that did not arrive in tea bags and a recognition of the special occasion we were there for.

Four of us met for brunch for a holiday get together. We were seated immediately by the hostess who was charming. There was quite a wait before the waitperson came and inquired if we wanted drinks. We did, and they were served in a timely manner. When ordering our meals, we did have a couple of questions regarding the menu, but the waitperson did not appear confident in her response. Two of us ordered a different variation of the three pancakes but when the plates arrived, they were exactly the same. The waitperson stood her ground that she had taken the order correctly, but this was not the case. Toast arrived late and barely cooked. At meals end three of us were finished while the fourth person was almost, but not quite, done. The waitperson was about to clear the three empty dishes before she was discreetly waved off. One would expect that a dining establishment of the caliber and reputation of The Russian Tea Room would train service staff to wait until all diners are finished before clearing the plates. Overall, the ambiance is beautiful and the food was fine. Service could be better.

Service was really poor at $160 per person afternoon tea. And they were out of several of the teas, brought us the wrong order and the wrong credit card back. Disappointing.

The entire tea service was WAY too expensive for the quality of what one is given. The portions are appropriate and fair with a good amount of food per person, but the cost of it all just seemed way out of proportion for a tea-service, and especially this one. One could easily tell the sandwiches were all pre-made (which is not too crazy to do but try to not make it so obvious) and some sandwiches were even a tad on the too-cold side, eg the tiny pancake was firm and cold, or some were too salty that I could not finish it, and what a waste at the price point. Our waiter was lovely, very attentive to us which we greatly appreciated. Anyway, unfortunately we won’t be going again.

The maitre d was fantastic. He went out of his way to tell us about the history of the Russian Tea Room, checked in on us, and offered to take family photos. The food was great. Every dish well prepared and tasted great. My only complaint was the timing. The appetizers came out fairly quickly and then there was a long gap before the main course arrived. Even by European standards it was quite a wait.
