The Gate Islington
Monday – Saturday 12:00 – 22:00
Sunday 12:00 – 21:30
We were really excited to try the Gate based on a friend’s recommendation. Whilst the food was beautifully presented, the taste did not deliver. The food was quite heavy and the tastes were not as refined as we had hoped.
Great food, good service! Bit chilly at times as we were sat next to the door but otherwise no complaints and would recommend!
This was my second visit to this restaurant. My first experience was wonderful from food, to service. However, my subsequent visit was disappointing. I had booked for 3 people but my husband was unable to come. I arrived at the restaurant and was seated. After being seated , I explained that there will only be the two of us. After about 10 minutes, the waiter asked if I wouldn’t mind moving to another table to enable her to join two tables together, to seat a larger group. Of course, I agreed and has happy to move. Having them sat me down at a table of her choosing, she comes back to ask me if I could move again for the same reason. I explained that this was inappropriate, unprofessional and embarrassing and that I was not going to move. At this point, I’m still waiting for my friend to arrive. Following on, my friend arrived. As we proceeded to order, most of the items we had hopped to chose from the set menu had finished. I appreciate it was a Sunday and it appeared to be a very popular restaurant. The food did look delicious. However, you would expect a restaurant to give you advance warning before sitting down to allow you to consider an alternative restaurant. I should also point out, that was no discussion or recognition of the poor experience when we paid the bill. Just not acceptable!
Great food and service as always
If you like proper veggie food, then this is the place to go in North London...and only a couple of minutes away from Sadler’s Wells theatre. Best to book as it gets very busy pre theatre time. Aubergine schnitzel is delicious.
Booked for pre-theatre meal and wanted to experiment with a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. We were not disappointed. The menu was innovative and tasty. I was truly delighted.
Disappointed as noisy and had to send food back to be heated up. Bathrooms were not very clean and flies so don’t think I will return which is a shame.
We pre-booked before going to Sadlers Wells matineeand have eaten here previously. This day was unbelievable...completely understaffed with nearly a full house and everyone waiting for food and people arriving and being turned away even though there was space. It was chaotic with no obvious manager around. In the end we gave up and left to go somewhere else. It’s a Shame because we know the food is good but service/management on this day s complete disaster.
Very disappointed with the meal. The food we ordered was not exciting as the dishes did not live up to description and not executed very well. It was definitely overpriced for what we were served.
To add to this, the service was incredibly slow.
It is also surprising that the restaurant markets itself as a vegetarian one, and yet (mostly) all of the food is in fact vegan. The choices were therefore a lot more limiting then what you'd expect.
There are many more vegetarian and vegan restaurants in London which offer much more exciting food and definitely better value for money.
everything about THE GATE is good. Pleasant staff, delicious food, nice relaxed feeling to the whole dining experience.
Two carnivores, two vegetarians, four happy diners. I'm one of the carnivores but the Pad Thai was bursting with so much freshness and flavour that the addition of chicken or prawn would have been an irrelevance. The pea sauce with the arancini was excellent, my wife and one of our friends both declared their Thai Red Curry to be excellent. It does get very noisy when it's buzzing so may not be ideal for a quiet, intimate dinner. But if you want vegetarian cooking that makes you forget you're eating vegetarian the Gate is the place to go.
All The Gate restaurants have very good vegetarian food. The food I enjoyed, but there is a problem with the venue. It is very noisy, and this is attributable to (1) the non-dampening type surface/walls, and (2) the fact that the staff operates in a manner impervious to the noise they are creating. Someone taking away the dirty dishes was busy clanging/bangin them without reserve. Someone at the counter seemed to be cleaning a filter, and banging this loudly against a metal basin. NB: a few times during our dinner we could barely hear each other around the same table. Nice food, but this is certainly the last time I venture into this restaurant.
Gourmet and vegetarian are two words which are rarely seen together, but they are here! The food is high-end vegetarian and absolutely delicious, even for a carnivore such as I.
Service was friendly but it was often difficult to attract the waiters' attentions, not because they were busy but because they seemed so relaxed and laid back. But that was a minor issue and I would definitely return to this restaurant, and to their Hammersmith branch where I have dined previously.
While its great to have an extensive vegetarian menu and the food was nice enough, it lacked subtlety or interest. For the price the standard of cooking needs to be much higher. The hard surfaces make it very noisy even when only half full. I remember when it opened and it was smart - its quite tatty in places. The waiter and the service was excellent as was the bread.
Overall a great night, and the food was fantastic, but we got the sense that they were up against it, as the service was very slow and quite random at times. For instance, it was quite a hot evening and we hadn’t been asked if we wanted anything to drink for at least the first twenty minutes. People around us were also asking if they could order food. We would go again though hopefully the service will be better next time.
The prices were high, so I'd expect at least very good food, but it was average at best. There were very few waiters, so slow and unattentive service. The place was also extremely noise with plates being banged against each other when being collected from the bar for the kitchen, and there was even shouting among the staff. I'd definitely not recomend, was a poor experience overall.
This place is absolutely amazing!!!! The food was delicious, the service was excellent and it’s in a great location. Will definitely go again.
Ideal venue for pre theatre at Sadler's Wells, especially if you or one of your party is a vegetarian. Rather oddly we were told that having the set menu without a desert was not possible, which is weird given that the dishes on the set menu are also on the a la carte. Generous portions certainly don't leave you hungry.
I've eaten here a number of times and have always had a good experience.
Small and compact restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian food. I am not a vegetarian but love eating here as food wonderful.
Food is always interesting and great quality, but you need to be patient as it takes a while to arrive. New lunchtime menu is a good idea.
Great service. Delicious food.
Excellent vegetarian food showing that you can drop meat and dairy without dropping taste or quality! We need more places like this to show people that vege and vegan food is not a step down. Would recommend anyone to go, but it is quite pricey - so save it for a special occasion!
Creative and tasty vegetarian dishes, and wonderful service from engaging staff. Great value for money.
warm welcome and great service added to the delicious range of vegetarian food on offer: each dish was distinct (so many previous vegetation venues have had a sort of 'generic' base to differently named dishes) and worth ordering again. good wine list and an eagerness to help made everything flow smoothly. would definitely recommend
Great location for pre theatre dinner. Food was very good if a little on the dear side but that's not uncommon for good quality veggie /vegan diners. Service was friendly and efficient and apart from having a draughty at my back it was a very nice evening.
Best veggie meal I had all month, made me actually contemplate permanent vegetarianism. Tacos were great!
Very interesting menu with an impressive array of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Awfully slow service.
Nice experience & setting. I've been here 4 times over the last few years. The food is good, and its a lovely place to dine, staff are nice enough, but sadly the food and all up exeperience is moderate to good, rather than great, which I know it has the potential to be.
We were a large party and they looked after us really well. Will definitely put on my list of good places to go in Islington.
Been here before so knew what to expect. Unfair to pick out any one employee, however, Miguel from Portugal was our server for the meal, he didn't put a foot wrong. Try for a table at the back, up the steps. On a Friday evening people were having to be turned away it was full !
Lovely meal as usual but what we have noticed is that there used to be a lunchtime menu with options under £10 but all the lunch options are much more expensive. We now plan to look for a different venue for our lunchtime work get together.
Very disappointed with the experience. The food was very average and the service not brilliant either. Far too expensive for what you get.
Miso aubergine starter divine , followed by hot spicy thai curry fortunately light on tofu(i'm a solid carnivore) but delicious combination of mushrooms and okra. Beautifully presented. we should have stopped there the desserts though again very nicely presented didn't match up to the superb flavour of the starters and main. Great pre ballet restaurant being so close to Sadlers Wells though the very relaxed service had me fretting for time, albeit needlessly. Thoroughly recommend and will return without doubt. thanks
This place is one of my favourite places to eat and spend a great time with people. I came here in new years eve and everything from the service and food was absolutely perfect.
Would love to come back more often this year because I'm never disappointed.
We enjoyed our evening at The Gate. Fabulous to have creative vegetarian dishes to choose from with most of the mains also being vegan. The starters were a bit pricey although delicious. Staff were great particularly as we asked to move from near the main door as it was cold and a little breezy so bear that in mind when booking! One little gripe was a waiter clearing the food off plates whilst still at the table and piling them precariously and leaving them!
The ambience is a bit so so - it’s a big space and rather dimly lit. Could do with a bit of thought as to how to make it all a bit more inviting.
Definitely worth a visit.
Food is wonderful- good size portions, well seasoned, and, as you might expect, packed full of veg!
Where the gate falls down is on service- it's not rude exactly, we were just not made to feel *that* special. When we arrived they tried to seat us next to the door in an empty restaurant, service was short with us/really quite slow and the waiter at the end was rather pushy for an additional tip considering service charge is included on the receipt...
Still, wonderfully close to sadlers wells if you're going to see the ballet and a great menu!
We had a delicious set of starters and one of the mains was exceptional/ the Roloto— the other just very good — mushroom risotto a bit too heavy on the mushroom and in need of a complimentary flavour. The service left a bit to be desired — hard to get waiter’s attention, also he at one point delivered with a flourish two Christmas Crackers for fun — which was delightful — but then about 30 seconds later took them back saying “you did not order from the right festive menu to get these”. Given crackers cost about 20p each I was surprised he would create such a disappointment for us. He saw our reactions and returned with one cracker for us to split but it really took the festive mood out of the air. Later he brought us the wrong bill and then returned to say without apology (almost accusingly) “this is not your bill!). Odd. Advice— please advise your wait staff to be a bit more liberal with the customer centric focus (especially given the level of restaurant this is).
Lunch so lovely and quiet. Food as delicious as always. Creative and beautifully presented vegetarian food.
Good food but very loud and painfully slow service. The staff are quite friendly. Just bring ear plugs and try to get here about an hour before you think you might be hungry.
