Matchbox - Merrifield
New at matchbox: Chef's Brunch Table, our unlimited buffet-style brunch + woo-fired pizzas.
Overlooking Strawberry Park in the vibrant Mosaic District, our 40-seat patio with fire pit offers outdoor dining and front row seats to Angelika Film Center’s outdoor screen and prime people-watching.
Inside, exposed pipes and warm brick line the walls surrounding 220 seats, all with views of the glowing wood wall, reclaimed from barn-wood from Rochester, New York. The private Barrel Room accommodates 50 guests and comes with plush booths, a wood-burning fireplace and private wine coolers to store your favorite vintages.
There were only two downsides to the evening:
1. It took a while before we had our order taken.
2. We sat outside and noticed that there were far too many people smoking right around the outside area/tables. That made it a bit unpleasant.
Good service st the bar. Friendly staff who were interested in connecting with their patrons.
They got the order wrong but made it up to us by giving us an extra helping of kids meal.
Pizza was a little too spicy for my son.
I had the chicken al Freda that was supposed to have cremini mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. It had neither. I asked for Parmesan cheese and was handed a shaker with Kraft dried cheese from 1960. All around horrid.
Plus we were warned when we arrived that they were short of staff. That was readily apparent. Not a great night to eat at Matchbox.
We had a great time at Matchbox! I brought my family here from out of town (including a picky teenager) and everyone enjoyed the food. They brought us a free appetizer (arancini, delicious!) because it was our first time visiting. We ordered a cheeseburger that was cooked less than we had requested, and they quickly replaced the entire plate with sincere apologies. We'll definitely return!
The food was okay. The crab cake was good but the jumbo shrimp was meh...! Service was slow and the waiter didn’t come back to fill our water glasses! Not a great experience!
Usually a superb experience but this time things were off. Fries and onion crisps were cold and a salad was delivered without dressing. Something was was amiss in the kitchen. But again, this was unusual.
Nice atmosphere, relatively slow service, not many veg/dietary options
Nothing is bad but it would take so little to make it 100 X better. Shrimp and grits were fine but what does it take to add a little cream and cheese to the grits and season it? This is corporate chain food and I guess it’s hey want a non cook to be able to make it. It takes little to make fries frites. You fry them twice and toss with paprika and salt. We asked for mayo with the fries and it took me war too little like long to get because the waiter is overworked. The place is fine but it could be so much better with so little effort and imagination, it’s a less greasy McDonalds with more choices and table service but it could be a cheap eats gem. Too bad.
I used to love Matchbox and was thrilled there was one in Mosaic when I moved into the area. However, this location is uneven in its food quality. I get the same thing almost every time (usually weekly basis), and I am served varying amounts of food. Not only is it not the same portion size on a week to week basis, the quality varies as well. With that quality downturn, and given the number of great restaurants in the area, I haven't been as often -- so it was disappointing to finally return after a month and end up with a spinach artichoke dip bowl that was half full and dry and under baked bread.
Matchbox is a great place for lunch or weekend brunch: There's something for everyone. The new Brunchbox Unlimited Brunch was appealing, with its $3 cocktails (choice of mimosa, peach bellini, or bloody mary), but it was a bit confusing--and way too much food for us. We stuck to the lunch menu instead, and I enjoyed my go-to personal pizza: prosciutto & fig with roasted garlic purée, blue cheese, black pepper honey, mozzarella, and arugula, a terrific flavor combination. Our server was responsive and on top of things, always knowing when we needed refills of water or iced tea. My only complaint about the restaurant is that when they're busy, it can get VERY loud. Aside from that, it's not fine dining, but for what it is--a casual place for a good meal--it's just about perfect
Everything was fine but the service was inattentive and slow, even when the restaurant had become less busy.
Best time to go is a weekday. It's packed on weekends and noisy, but food is great.
Great service from the waiter on Sunday on the patio. Avocado toast was good.
Normally this place is great, but on this particular visit we had to wait 30-45 minutes for refills on drinks, brunch items, etc. The server was very overwhelmed and the kitchen was very behind. However, the food was excellent as usual and I would still recommend this place. A bad day isn't going to ruin my overall love of Matchbox.
Good place, slightly pricey but it is good for a night out
Typically a great time but bar service was very slow while sitting in the dining area. Ordered a pizza and salad and asked for anchovies on the SALAD. They came on the pizza instead of the salad. Wife was a trooper by taking them off but the taste was baked in. Waitress was nowhere to be found salad was just ok!
How can you run out of one of the most common ingredients, basil? A margherita pizza is not one without basil! Also, our server was somewhat pushy about everyone filling out the paper to join the rewards program.
The waiter dumped a tray of drinks on me. Our pizza was cold & missing ingredients. A manager never came to speak with us. Very disappointed.
No AC made this less than ideal. Food was good but it was pretty uncomfortable
Always a family favorite . Great service and food. The air conditioning was suffering .
Arguably one of the hottest days of summer, I met a couple girlfriends for dinner and drinks. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant, near the kitchen and ovens. It became clear very quickly that the air conditioning was no longer working (and confirmed by multiple staff). Our waiter gave me the top of a pizza box to fan myself and said the manager would come by to speak to us. The manager never showed but the very kind waiter comp’d the food. As staff and patrons were obviously uncomfortable, I was appalled to see hostesses continuing to seat customers without warning of the broken a/c. It was a miserable experience for us and shame on management for putting customers and staff in such a dangerously hot room. I will not return.
Restaurant did not honor my reservation and seated multiple tables before me - despite promises to seat me promptly. I then got seated behind a pillar where the waiter could not see me. Took 30 minutes for food to come, once we finally placed the order. Very poorly run and managed.
My favorite item at Matchbox is the arancini. I seriously think it's the best. I have had it many places including upscale Italian restaurants but this is the best. I like their pizza too. Crust is thin and crispy. You have so many choices for toppings plus you can do a 1/2 and 1/2. I get one side of pepperoni and the other side as a white pizza with olives. The brunch is very good too. On this visit we had a large group and it was way too hot in the restaurant. We went to their sister restaurant, Ted's Bulletin, for dessert.
Server and team weren’t good at clearing plates or empty glasses. Food was good but the special lobster roll was a little bit disappointing.
Thanks for a great visit.
I feel the recent change of menu has limited vegeratarian offers, my family now call the place - Meatbox
you have removed the veggie burger and other options and this is a shame.
Excellent except service was a bit slow.
The food was really good. I got the sliders and the thinly cut onion rings were delicious. It tasted sweet and was just overall good. Also the talking in matchbox was quiet and I couldn't hear other peoples conversations, but it was nice that it wasn't silent. I had a good time with my date and couldn't thank matchbox enough
Food was tasty. Appreciate the gluten sensitive options. Our server was attentive and delightful. Noise level was loud - there was a loud group next to us - but something about the acoustics makes the noise amplify. Still enjoyed it and would go again.
Ordered the chicken sandwich Nashville style and it was ok. However, the pizzas were amazing! Such a great meal to share with others and strongly recommend the pork belly and also the crab pizzas.
This was my first time at the Merrifield Matchbox. It is as good as I knew it would be.
I usually enjoy Matchbox and I order the Margherita pizza however, my order was just ok. The pizza wasn’t hot when it came and it was very very thin.
Did not see anything on the new menu worth trying. Many old favorites were no longer offered. So we left after only an appetizer and a drink.
Our waiter was super helpful with the needs for our special daughter with an intellectual disability - really appreciated the kindness.
Guess it was a bad night. We had a reservation and were told we would have to wait because there were no tables. So while waiting, I used the restroom and there were multiple eampy booths open. Strange! The salmon, requested with a warm, pink center was SO over done and SO salty. They took it back, no problem, but then the others ate while I waited for a new dinner. Seems like the prices have gone up quite a bit.
Always great -- super service. Really appreciate that they are on Open Table so we can walk right in and avoid waiting.
My son’s fourth birthday lunch was amazing. The staff really stopped by frequently (not too frequent where it was a bother, but just enough to really not have any huge gaps of time in between visits). They brought him a dessert with a candle and sang to him. The food came out timely enough, and was cooked to our order.
