Oh Dear....Another expensive celebrity endorsed rip off. Visited for lunch mid December for my Birthday. The restaurant and ambience was lovely and staff friendly although our waitress was extremely nervous probably due to the expectation of complaints. The star of the show ( food) was mediocre to say the least. I mean the salmon starter had no taste, how can fresh salmon be tasteless? And the basics warm food on cold plates??? Had better meals at the harvester. Anyway cant be bothered to waste anymore time discussing the River Cottage Canteen Bristol as life is too short.

In short the restaurant seemed to be critically understaffed, Expensive and a poor justification for the price of the meal.
While the staff were courteous, I felt largely ignored by them in the wait between ordering and delivery which was an unbearable hour and a half. To add salt into the wounds, they charged me for bread I had asked for during the wait for my main course. Which given my preconceived presumption, I was expecting to be offered, if not given freely. As a result I'd rather go to the Kebab shop across the road than step forward in that restaurant again.

Having had a fabulous meal at river cottage Winchester, we were really looking forward to the Bristol restaurant. The building and staff were lovely but the menu and food underwhelming.

Lovely layout, staff were friendly and food was delicious. However a full priced main meal comes with NO sides! Sides are FAR TOO OVERPRICED! £3-4 for the tiniest portion of potato wedges, or a fork-full of beans, etc.

Staff were slow and needed hurrying up frequently.

I arranged a surprise cake and did a run through with staff, later to have desert menus dished out instead.

Staff were friendly though.

The River Cottage Canteen has some superb tasting food and great ambiance but the overpriced underwhelming sides were a huge disappoint. Double the portions or include some in the price of the mains and I'll come back.

River Cottage has become a regular eating venue for us, from an occasional lunch to a group dinner in the private dining room. The combination of ingredients is always interesting without being fussy and pretentious, and beautifully prepared. Today I was taking to lunch someone I had never met before but who happened to have done me an amazingly generous anonymous service. Our meal was the perfect accompaniment to a long and interesting conversation.

We visited River Cottage Canteen for my parents 30th wedding anniversary. This was a long awaited visit - we had wanted to visit the restaurant when it first opened but had found it difficult to get a table!

The food was wonderful - two members of our party were vegetarian and we were delighted with the range of vegetarian options on the menu which are not available elsewhere. We all enjoyed a mix of flavours and ingredients which were unusual but worked well together.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was great - there was lots of room between tables which gave a feeling of space. The service was also of a high standard, with our waiter being very attentive and making recommendations on the menu.

Overall we had a fantastic experience at River Cottage and would certainly go back again.

So much to choose from the menu so it was difficult to decide what to eat. Loved the kids menu as it had better quality of food rather than the usual fast food style items you get at other restaurants. Wish there was one in London.

Very disappointed in our first and now our last visit to River Cottage Canteen. My boyfriend and I had been looking forward to eating at this restaurant and we left very underwhelmed! Food was somewhat dry and bland tasting. Our starter was ok but nothing special. For main course, I had the vegetable tartlet which was dry, cold and tasteless. My boyfriend had the plaice which again was very dry and lacking in wholesome flavour. Not exactly a cheap night out as the food is somewhat pricey for what we considered to be a below average experience. Would not recommend.

Service was excellent. Friendly and efficient. It was a last minute booking, so we were tucked away upstairs, but the atmosphere was still OK. The food was fine, with generous portions of vegetables. However, I wouldn't say that the food was exceptional in any way and so I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it.

Vegetarian and meat-eaters in our party - all found the food delicious. The staff were great, really helpful & friendly. We were there for a late lunch on a Saturday - might be a bit more pressure for say, Sunday lunch. Will repeat the experience with pleasure.

Superb food if a lttle expensive and the same for the drinks. Having not eaten here before, a couple of tips from the waitress would of been very helpful, such as the bread being a large portion (too much for one person) and that a suitable alternative for coke is available rather than letting us order a completely different drink. To most people cola or coke is the same thing.

The food here is just delicious, having now enjoyed 2 exceptional meals. The ambience of the restaurant is great, and decor is what you would expect from a restaurant in a trendy area of the city.

Ask for a table on the ground floor close to the kitchen if watching the chefs at work is your thing.

Staff are extremely friendly and accommodating and give great recommendations if you can't choose from all of the great options. The only thing that lets service down, and I find this a lot in more expensive restaurants, is that that they seem to forget things and are quite slow. Drinks are slow and you do have to remind them that you have asked for little things. These are not huge things, but when you are paying premium prices you do expect a slightly higher level of service.

We booked a table last minute (for an early dinner) and turned up with our 1 year old boy.
The restaurant itself is in a converted old church and is stunning. We sat right by the open kitchen, which was great to watch and created a real atmosphere. Unfortunately our boy was not happy so my partner had to go outside to settle him and return when he fell asleep- staff were very friendly and kind when this happened. We ordered a mezze starter which was polished off very quickly- the smoky aubergine dip was amazing! We then ordered two mains and three side veg dishes to share- cider brined chicken thighs, roasted hake then charred cauliflower, green beans with hazelnuts and pink fir potatoes. All very simple, but so delicious and seasonal. We then had strawberry panna cotta and a raspberry/lemon curd meringue for afters. I couldn't fault a thing...if we lived locally we'd be here every week! It's inspired us to cook with different dressings and vegetables at home too. Highly recommended!

Nice food there. Some of the portion sizes were really small given the price we were paying which felt like a rip off / disappointing. Still tasty food so would recommend it to others (if you don't mind small portion sizes) but probably wouldn't go back there myself.

We have eaten here several times and have always been very impressed with the service, quality of food and helpfulness of staff. Last weekend however this want the case. The staff were clearly very busy, orders took a long time and in the end we didn't even get dinner plates!! The server was v apologetic afterwards but it will be a while before we think about going again.

We were left disappointed on occasion, previously have enjoyed eating here but the and portion sizes seemed reduced, the food was warm not hot and the service was slow, we waited a long time for our drinks. When the drinks arrived the cocktails were the flavours advertised.

We were also disappointed not be offered the 2/3 course set price menu when other tables were offered after we ordered.

Generally poor showing, we will not be returning in a hurry.

We had a pleasant lunch at River Cottage Canteen. The food was very good. Simple fare, locally sourced, nicely presented and well priced. I wasn't 'excited' about it, but it was good. I think the vegetarian options (which I went for) could be a bit more exciting. Not poncey (!) but they seemed a tad dull compared to the meaty options. Perhaps more unusual / interesting choices of veg, cheeses etc might jazz them up a bit. Also why not provide a small amount of nice bread with every meal, like most of the rest of Europe does? Little things like that really make it.

We booked the restaurant last minute for a Saturday at 8.45
On arrival we where informed the table was not ready and asked to have a drink at the bar .
It appeared short staffed behind the bar and despite the waitress acknowledge we where waiting it took 15 minutes to be served as she and one other colleague where serving the restaurant.
We where then shown to our table and informed . No steak no lamb and some other meat dish .
A venison meatloaf was the replacement. Along with chicken thighs and Pork.
I fail to understand how a restaurant of this nature could run out of 3 meat dishes!
We eat starters and left as both wanted meat. Went over to Aqua where surprisingly nothing ran out
I would not recommend it or go back to the restaurant

Our first and definitely last evening out at River Cottage Canteen was very underwhelming. Our party had to wait nearly an hour and a quarter before our table was ready. A small sharing platter was offered free of charge to compensate us for the wait, which barely between the seven of us. When we came to ordering our meal several of the main courses were unavailable. Our meal eventually arrived with two wrong vegetable accompaniments. Needless to say, we didn't stay to order a dessert. Very poor.

This is obviously an excellent restaurant with high standards, that takes itself very seriously in what it does. My girlfriend and I were impressed with the food and the very friendly and helpful serving staff. It was all very tasty and it's got a lovely atmosphere in a very picturesque building. There were however some problems in that the three most popular dishes (steak, the lamb and chicken) were all out of stock. I opted for my third choice (the venison special) and my girlfriend had the fish. The food was excellent though, but the serving staff were obviously over stretched with rather long waiting times and confused service at times. The restaurant responded really well to our disappointment in the lack of choices for mains though -- they gave us our bottle of wine for free! Overall, I would definitely recommend the River Cottage Canteen and we'll certainly be going there again.

Went for a birthday meal and was very disappointed. Although the staff were lovely there clearly weren't enough of them so it took 2 hours to get 2 courses and we were about to cancel the coffee when it arrived. Food was unimpressive, hot and cold sides served on the same dish so all cold, lamb was tasty but over cooked however they were happy to take it off the bill. Wouldn't go back, trading off celebrity chef status but not living up to it....

We booked River Cottage for a mid-week 18th birthday meal. The restaurant staff were welcoming and friendly but service was slow and inattentive. The restaurant was unable to provide a second order of cocktails and although it was very nice that the birthday girl was given a glass of champagne this was offered right at the end of the meal during the dessert. The food itself was delicious as you would expect from River Cottage.
