Afternoon Tea at the Compleat Angler Beautiful location on the Thames looking across to the bridge and church in Marlow. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The scones and little cakes were lovely. The sandwiches could have been a little more imaginative. The choice of teas was very good. I think for the price I expected more 'afternoon-tea-finesse'. Small things like changing side-plates and knives after the sandwiches had been eaten seemed a basic need. Preparing your scone on a plate with egg on it and spreading cream on the scone with pickle on the knife is not ideal. Overall a good experience but let down by small details.

I like the place but some notes should be taken in consideration; kitchen smell ( sea food smell ) and it was indoor only due to the weather as they said Windy ( wasn’t like that ) The outdoor was amazing and deserve the visit ( wasn’t 5 minutes for photos ) It was OVERPRICED for tea and some sweets and bread ( 90£ for two !! )

We decided to have lunch on 11.04.25 at the Riverside, as this was just before our wedding on 12.04.25 and we were staying overnight. We checked out their website the day before, and were looking forward to one or two dishes on the menu on their website. When we arrived, we were given the most expensive menu they have for lunch; we queried where the other menu was, and they said their website must be out of date! They then gave us two more menus; so 3 in total, which is completely unnecessary - just put all the food available for lunch on ONE menu. We both ordered a chicken ceasar salad and a chicken sandwich each, with a small pot of chips, a virgin Mary, and half a larger with lime. The total bill came to £118+. EXTORTIONATE for a very middle of the road offering. I wondered why the restaurant was completely empty at lunchtime; its probably because people feel ripped off here. Save your money and visit one of the very excellent restaurants in Marlow.

We had a very attentive server who checked on us and made changes that we required to the standard afternoon tea menu however it all came at a cost just a simple substitution. There is also an Indian restaurant on site which the smell overtook the whole building. There was plenty of sandwiches and cakes to go round and the overall standard was acceptable but not as high as we expected and we unfortunately had egg shell in the sandwiches that then put us off and a tea stained cup which was substituted but not the standard we expected.

Upon our arrival at the restaurant, we were immediately informed that it was closed, without any inquiry about whether we had a reservation. We stood at the entrance while the manager verified our booking, which was not a welcoming first impression. The initial interaction was so disappointing that we considered leaving; however, no other restaurants were accepting reservations at that time, so we decided to stay. We were seated in the porch area and proceeded to place our order. Due to the strong winds, we politely asked if it would be possible to move indoors. The waiter consulted the manager, but we were curtly informed that indoor seating was not available as the restaurant was about to close. We wondered why they even allowed us in the restaurant in the first place. On a positive note, the waiter was courteous and the food presentation was commendable. However, the overall experience was far from satisfactory. The staff, particularly the manager, who made no effort to engage with us, seemed in need of further training in customer service. We hope for a significantly improved experience should we choose to visit again in the future. Wishing the team all the best.

Good food and good service. Sadly there was a table of fellow diners who made so much noise that it was difficult to converse at our table.
