The name ROKA carries great meaning - ROKA is a meeting place where food and drinks are shared with friends (ro) and heat, warmth and an all-embracing energy surround (ka). The principle cuisine is from the robata grill, which originates from the fishermen of the northern coastal waters off japan, who would cook the fish on the boats with different charcoals and share the bounty with one another using their oars.
The robata grill itself is located amid diners and forms an integral design element of all the restaurants. Not just a feature, the robata is more the beating heart of ROKA, the area from which all energy flows. An energy that offers warmth and enjoyment while guests admire the respect given to the food as each dish is prepared.
ROKA charlotte street opened in 2004, ROKA canary wharf in 2009, ROKA mayfair in february 2014 and ROKA aldwych in october 2014.

Always a good experience at Roka
Very very loud
Batman was very very rude
Food was poor portion especially the blacken cod £35 for more or less a fish finger
Not at all attentive to see if needed another drink
Too many waiters
No personal touch
Wouldn’t recommend this branch of roka restaurant
Great service and quality food. The Han Setto menu with free flowing wine was amazing value - we were offered more of the sharing plates and the attentive staff always made sure our glasses were full. The Dessert platter was impressive and delicious.
Worth every penny, definitely recommend. I didn’t even realise we could have saved a few quid if we had the timeout voucher.
Noisy ( you had to scream when talking to your friend at the table). Food was ok, but nothing extraordinary. Service ok, but slow, warm food was not warm!
Overrated and overprized, we think.
Simply exceptional pan asian cooking. Sublime flavours and very well connected ingredients. Phenomenally expensive as portions are small so you need to order at least 3 starters between 2 people - same for main (four between 2) but worth it. Service a little haphazard (involved a word with the manager to get this back on track) but sommelier was very good, with some very adept recommendations.
Short-ish menu, but each item was consistently excellent at Roka Aldwych. In particular the sashimi and robata grill items were fantastic . Highly recommended
Love Roka. I used to go to other branch, but this is also very good. Service was great
Very lovely, staff very friendly
The food was absolutely superb at the Han Setto brunch. However, there were only 4 of us, and we were surrounded by tables of 8 people and the noise level was incredible - people shouting across tables at each other. The staff kindly moved us to the lobby area which was much better but we were then surrounded by people’s children running around our table. It’s a shame that for such good food it’s so rowdy - I’ve had a la carte dinner there before and it’s been absolutely fine so it might be the bottomless booze that makes it so disruptive.
Lovely meal, and good service. A little loud, but otherwise good
My second visit but first for evening dinner. Our table was for 5.30 pm prior to attending the theatre. It was quiet at that time but was pretty full by the time we left at 7 pm. Service was just right, the food delicious. I personally struggled with the chopsticks but a fork was supplied on request.
We had the £44 set menu which was lovely, especially the steak. The house red was extremely palatable.
Excellent food and good attentive service marred by chefs cooking in their area and making too much noise shouting and talking- what is need?
Improve this and you will see me come back
Noisy, had to ask for wine list 3 times, but good food and ver kind service. A bit on the expensive side.
Love love love!
With great vegan and vegetarian options.
Excellent food and service. The wine inclusive Sunday brunch was good value considering the quality of the food
Essen hervorragend - leider sehr laut (grenzwertig)!
Great food, good service.
Went for the set lunch course and the amount of food was disappointing, the quality good though.
The service was a bit slow and seemed a bit disorganised. One waitress even asked if a dish she brought was for us even though we ordered the set menu so did not really know.
It was pretty noisy too but good atmosphere.
Amazing once again! Roka never fails to impress and this time it was no exception. We ordered a variety from the menu and loved every bit of it. The black cod, lamb chops, and scallop skewer were the standouts of what we ordered. I personally don't eat sushi but the group ordered the selection of 5 sashimi and were very impressed. The beef and ginger gyoza were one my favorites, however, the seabream could have been skipped (no comparison to the black cod). Overall, the service was exceptional, cocktails tasty, and the atmosphere great and lively . Highly recommend for special occasions or a client lunch, as it is pricey but worth every penny!
Looking for decent authentic Japanese food? Don’t come here.
Great food and excellent service. The staff were extremely attentive and helpful. It was a little pricey at £104 for 2 without wine or deserts.
1x Prawn Tempura
1x Bowl of rice
2x Chicken Skewers
1x Bottle of water
We were here Friday night. It’s was fairly busy but the service was very quick and everyone was very helpful. We ordered the tasting menu which was really good. We both liked everything and the dessert platter at the end was also very good.
We sampled a couple of cocktails each and they were lovely
Very noisy. Otherwise top-notch.
Beautiful restaurant with halal options, however not many options for marinated foods without alcohol. Halal also implies dishes must be prepared without alcoholic ingredients, so for future reference the menu should be tailored to this. The staff, however, were very accommodating and prepared a dish for me without a hassle and with great service and kindness. Highly recommend this venue!
The food is exceptional! Soft shell crab rolls and Wagu tartar are delectable. And that wall nigiri is simply the best I’ve ever had - perfectly cooked eel (not over cooked as is usually the case) that is ever so lightly brushed with teriyaki sauce that is perfectly caramelized as is evidenced by a few slightly crispy beads atop the fish. My only contention is the noise level: simply atrocious. Eat and run.
The food was really good and the staff were very attentive. Will definitely be going there again.
Food was great, staff very attentive, nice ambience. Totally worth it.
Been there for dinner with a friend. Food was very good and service was outstanding. Very recommendable !
We were won over by the charming manager. Initial service issues (table not ready for almost 30 mins even though not busy, waited over 20 mins to be served at bar, wrong bottle then served) made up for by the attention of the manager and an appropriate gesture. shouldn't have happened but it how you recover that counts. food outstanding!
The food was very good. I had visited Japan 3 weeks before having lunch there and it met the standard. The pre-fix menu was very well balanced and reasonable. Their only are for improvement was when recommending a Sake, they did not let me know the price, and it costed as much as the menu. That talks bad about the service.
Amazing food and attentive Pro active service. Will be back!
Very good but price reflects this as well, the black cod was amazing!
The food is quite good but outstanding. Service is good and great wine selection. However very noisy
Great service and good food. Was able to accommodate food restrictions. Unfortunately didn’t like the desert. Was trying too hard. Just wanted ice cream
Their cheesecake is the best in town!
Great service, great food, lovely restaurant. Premium tasting menu was amazing.
Very nice experience
Roka Aldwych is a wonderful venue with tremendous variance of food. The Japanese theme is consistent throughout and the food is excellent. Very tasty and the cocktails are good. The blackened cod, wagyu beef and lamb cutlets are long time favourites.
Excellent restaurant, the food is great. Only drawback is the noise level of the restaurant.
